Texture is a complex trait and a major component of fruit quality in *** the major effect of MdPG1,a gene controlling firmness,has already been exploited in elite cultivars,the genetic basis of crispness remains poorly *** further improve fruit texture,harnessing loci with minor effects via genomic selection is therefore *** this study,we measured acoustic and mechanical features in 537 genotypes to dissect the firmness and crispness components of fruit *** of across-year phenotypic values for these components were calculated using a model calibrated with 8,294 SNP *** best prediction accuracies following cross-validations within the training set of 259 genotypes were obtained for the acoustic linear distance(0.64).Predictions for biparental families using the entire training set varied from low to high accuracy,depending on the family *** adding siblings or half-siblings into the training set did not clearly improve predictions,we performed an optimization of the training set size and composition for each validation *** allowed us to increase prediction accuracies by 0.17 on average,with a maximal accuracy of 0.81 when predicting firmness in the‘Gala’×‘Pink Lady’*** results therefore identified key genetic parameters to consider when deploying genomic selection for texture in *** particular,we advise to rely on a large training population,with high phenotypic variability from which a‘tailored training population’can be extracted using a priori information on genetic relatedness,in order to predict a specific target population.

油菜籽油质的高低取决于脂肪酸的组成成分比,如油酸（C18:1）、亚油酸（C18:2）和亚麻酸（C18:3）成分的高低。多数冬性油菜品种产出的油中有60%的油酸。对于新食品市场和非食品市场（抗氧化性更好）来讲,开发具更高油酸含量的冬性油菜品种是极其必要的。在本研究中,我们分别从经过两轮EMS诱导的突变体和野生型油菜品种中扩增出甘蓝型油菜（***）fad2（源自于***（fad2C）和白菜型油菜的fad2A）)的克隆,并对它们测序。通过比较突变体和野生型品种中fad2等位基因的序列可以发现两个基因中（fad2C和fad2A）都发生了单核苷酸突变。进一步的序列分析使我们得出,脂肪酸含量变化的机理是突变体中两种突变造成的。根据突变体和野生型中等位基因的序列差异,我们开发了两个单核苷酸多态性标记（SNP）,分别对应着fad2C基因和fad2A基因的突变。六个双单倍体群体用于检验fad2C和fad2A这两个突变的等位基因对油酸含量影响的特点。在进行标记辅助选择渗入性状和高油酸含量油菜育种中,这些新的分子标记将对直接选择需要的fad2C和fad2A等位基因十分有用。

Apples are a nutritious food source with significant amounts of polyphenols that contribute to human health and wellbeing,primarily as dietary *** numerous pre-and post-harvest factors can affect the composition of polyphenols in apples,genetics is presumed to play a major role because polyphenol concentration varies dramatically among apple *** we investigated the genetic architecture of apple polyphenols by combining high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)data with~100,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)from two diverse apple *** found that polyphenols can vary in concentration by up to two orders of magnitude across cultivars,and that this dramatic variation was often predictable using genetic markers and frequently controlled by a small number of large effect genetic *** GWAS,we identified candidate genes for the production of quercitrin,epicatechin,catechin,chlorogenic acid,4-O-caffeoylquinic acid and procyanidins B1,B2,and *** observation that a relatively simple genetic architecture underlies the dramatic variation of key polyphenols in apples suggests that breeders may be able to improve the nutritional value of apples through markerassisted breeding or gene editing.

There exist many iterative methods for computing the maximum likelihood estimator but most of them suffer from one or several drawbacks such as the need to inverse a Hessian matrix and the need to find good initial approximations of the parameters that are unknown in practice. In this paper, we present an estimation method without matrix inversion based on a linear approximation of the likelihood equations in a neighborhood of the constrained maximum likelihood estimator. We obtain closed-form approximations of solutions and standard errors. Then, we propose an iterative algorithm which cycles through the components of the vector parameter and updates one component at a time. The initial solution, which is necessary to start the iterative procedure, is automated. The proposed algorithm is compared to some of the best iterative optimization algorithms available on R and MATLAB software through a simulation study and applied to the statistical analysis of a road safety measure.

Longitudinal studies are those in which the same variable is repeatedly measured at different times. These studies are more likely than others to suffer from missing values. Since the presence of missing values may have an important impact on statistical analyses, it is important that they should be dealt with properly. In this paper, we present “Copy Mean”, a new method to impute intermittent missing values. We compared its efficiency in eleven imputation methods dedicated to the treatment of missing values in longitudinal data. All these methods were tested on three markedly different real datasets (stationary, increasing, and sinusoidal pattern) with complete data. For each of them, we generated nine types of incomplete datasets that include 10%, 30%, or 50% of missing data using either a Missing Completely at Random, a Missing at Random, or a Missing Not at Random missingness mechanism. Our results show that Copy Mean has a great effectiveness, exceeding or equaling the performance of other methods in almost all configurations. The effectiveness of linear interpolation is highly data-dependent. The Last Occurrence Carried Forward method is strongly discouraged.

The electrochemical conversion of sunlight by photoelectrochemical cells(PECs)is based on semiconductor electrodes that are interfaced with a liquid *** approach is highly promising,first,because it can be employed for the generation of a chemical fuel(e.g.,H2)to store solar energy that can be used on-demand to generate electricity when the sun is not ***,it can be seen as a concept reminiscent of photosynthesis,where CO_(2) is converted into a valuable feedstock by solar ***,photoelectrochemical cells are sometimes referred to as“artificial leaves”.Silicon,being the main semiconductor in the electronics and photovoltaic sector,is a prime candidate to be used as the light absorber and the substrate for building photoelectrochemical ***,Si alone has“poor-to-no photoelectrochemical performance”.This is caused by its weak electrocatalytic activity for cathodic reactions(namely,the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER),the CO_(2) reduction reaction(CDRR),and the N2 reduction reaction)and by its deactivation in the anodic regime,prohibiting its use for the oxygen evolution reaction(OER).This latter reaction is essential for supplying electrons to generate a solar *** to these problems,layers that both protect and are catalytically active are typically employed on Si photoelectrodes but require rather sophisticated manufacturing processes(e.g.,atomic layer or electron beam deposition),which hinders research and innovation in this ***,our group and others have demonstrated that these layers are not always required and that highly active and stable Si-based photoelectrodes can be manufactured using simple wet processes,such as drop casting,electroless deposition,or aqueous *** this Account,we first introduce the topic and the possible structures that can be easily obtained starting from commercial Si ***,we discuss strategies that have been employed to manufacture photocathodes based on p-ty
