Cropland abandonment is common and widely distributed in hilly and mountainous *** the current situation and development of cropland abandonment can provide reference for the rational and classified management of cropland abandonment in hilly and mountainous *** Jiangxi Province as the study area,and using the Google Earth Engine and landsat data,the scale and years of abandoned cropland from 2002 to 2020 were calculated by using the random forest classifier and rules for identifying cropland *** spatio-temporal pattern of cropland abandonment at the county level was *** results indicated that the overall accuracy of land use classification was over 90%.The cropland abandonment rate ranged from 3%to 5.5%from 2002 to 2020,while the cropland abandonment rate was highest in 2013 and showed a downward trend after *** the years,the area of first-time abandoned cropland was the largest in *** distribution of the cropland abandonment rate was low in the middle and north,but high in the surrounding area and the south.A notable positive spatial correlation was observed in the cropland abandonment rate,with a gradual intensification of spatial *** LIsA cluster map revealed a significant north-south disparity,exhibiting an incremental trend over time in the characteristics of the“High-High”cluster in the southeastern Mountainous Area and the“Low-Low”cluster in the Poyang Lake Hilly Plain in *** results of this study can provide data for extracting spatial information and analyzing the driving factors of cropland abandonment in hilly and mountainous areas,and they can also provide a basis for the development of policies for the utilization and classification management of abandoned cropland.

restoration of the degraded rangelands in Jordan using mechanized water harvesting and native species planting has become key to enhancing and maintaining the productivity and resilience of fragile ecosystems.A balanced interaction between the rangeland's hydrology and vegetation states is vital for achieving long-term *** gain a better insight into the impact of restoration on surface runoff and erosion and its role in recovering the ecosystem functions,we used the Rangeland Hydrological and Erosion Model(RHEM)to simulate various vegetation *** research aims to understand the rangelands'water and sediment dynamics and the vegetation transition states of the ecosystem through evaluating the current(degraded)situation,assess the restoration approach on improving the degraded status(restored),and investigate the long-term sustainability of the restoration approach compared with historical rangeland conditions(baseline).several scenarios were developed with rangeland experts,local community representatives,and measurements at protected and restored areas to represent the rangeland *** found that restoration of the degraded Badia areas will decrease annual surface runoff from an average of 23.5 to 19.1 mm/year and soil erosion rate from 3.3 to 1.3 tons/*** time,restoration can bring back rangeland water and sediment dynamics closer towards the baseline conditions,which were 16.9 mm/year runoff rates and 0.85 ton/ha/year soil *** results indicate that restoration is a promising methodology to restore the degraded ecosystem and approximate the environment's historical hydrological regime.

Background Large-river decision-makers are charged with maintaining diverse ecosystem services through unprec-edented social-ecological transformations as climate change and other global stressors *** interconnected,dendritic habitats of rivers,which often demarcate jurisdictional boundaries,generate complex management ***,we explore how the Resist–Accept–Direct(RAD)framework may enhance large-river management by promoting coordinated and deliberate responses to social-ecological trajectories of *** RAD frame-work identifies the full decision space of potential management approaches,wherein managers may resist change to maintain historical conditions,accept change toward different conditions,or direct change to a specified future with novel *** the upper Mississippi River system,managers are facing social-ecological transformations from more frequent and extreme high-water *** illustrate how RAD-informed basin-,reach-,and site-scale decisions could:(1)provide cross-spatial scale framing;(2)open the entire decision space of potential management approaches;and(3)enhance coordinated inter-jurisdictional management in response to the trajectory of the upper Mississippi River *** The RAD framework helps identify plausible long-term trajectories in different reaches(or subbasins)of the river and how the associated social-ecological transformations could be managed by altering site-scale *** reach-scale objectives may reprioritize how,where,and when site conditions could be altered to contribute to the basin goal,given the basin’s plausible trajectories of change(e.g.,by coordinating action across sites to alter habitat connectivity,diversity,and redundancy in the river mosaic).Conclusions When faced with long-term systemic transformations(e.g.,>50 years),the RAD framework helps explicitly consider whether or when the basin vision or goals may no longer be achievable,and direct options may open y

understanding the spatial variation,temporal changes,and their underlying driving forces of carbon sequestration in various forests is of great importance for understanding the carbon cycle and carbon management *** carbon density and sequestration in various Cunninghamia lanceolata forests,extensively cultivated for timber production in subtropical China,vary with biodiversity,forest structure,environment,and cultural factors remain poorly explored,presenting a critical knowledge gap for realizing carbon sequestration supply potential through *** on a large-scale database of 449 permanent forest inventory plots,we quantified the spatial-temporal heterogeneity of aboveground carbon densities and carbon accumulation rates in Cunninghamia lanceolate forests in Hunan Province,China,and attributed the contributions of stand structure,environmental,and management factors to the heterogeneity using quantile age-sequence analysis,partial least squares path modeling(PLs-PM),and hot-spot *** results showed lower values of carbon density and sequestration on average,in comparison with other forests in the same climate zone(i.e.,subtropics),with pronounced spatial and temporal ***,quantile regression analysis using carbon accumulation rates along an age sequence showed large differences in carbon sequestration rates among underperformed and outperformed forests(0.50 and 1.80 Mg·ha^(-1)·yr^(-1)).PLs-PM demonstrated that maximum DBH and stand density were the main crucial drivers of aboveground carbon density from young to mature ***,species diversity and geotopographic factors were the significant factors causing the large discrepancy in aboveground carbon density change between low-and high-carbon-bearing *** analysis revealed the importance of culture attributes in shaping the geospatial patterns of carbon *** work highlighted that retaining largesized DBH trees and increasing shade-t

Climate Change Impacts on Environmental Hazards on the great Hungarian Plain, Carpathian basin

The potential impacts of climate change on the great Hungarian Plain based on two regional climate models,REMO and ALADIN,were analyzed using indicators for environmental *** the climate parameters(temperature,precipitation,and wind)will change in the two investigated periods(2021–2050 and 2071–2100),their influences on drought,wind erosion,and inland excess water hazards are modeled by simple predictive *** hazards on arable lands will increasingly affect the productivity of agriculture compared to the reference period(1961–1990).The models predict an increase between 12.3%(REMO)and 20%(ALADIN)in the first period,and between 35.6%(REMO)and 45.2%(ALADIN)in the second *** increase of wind erosion hazards is not as obvious(+15%for the first period in the REMO model).Inland excess water hazards are expected to be slightly reduced(-4 to 0%)by both model predictions in the two periods without showing a clear tendency on *** three indicators together give a first regional picture of potential hazards of climate *** predictive model and data combinations of the regional climate change models and the hazard assessment models provide insights into regional and subregional impacts of climate change and will be useful in planning and land management activities.

Climate change and land use/cover change(LuCC)can both exert great impacts on the generation processes of precipitation and ***,previous studies usually neglected considering the contribution component of future LuCC in evaluating changes in hydrological *** this study,an integrated framework is developed to quantify and partition the impact of climate change and LuCC on future runoff ***,a daily bias correction(DBC)method and the Cellular Automaton-Markov(CA-Markov)model are used to project future climate and LuCC scenarios,and then future runoff is simulated by the calibrated soil and Water Assessment Tool(sWAT)model with different climate and LuCC ***,the uncertainty of future runoff and the contribution rate of the two driving factors are systematically *** Han River basin in China was selected as a case *** indicate that:1)both climate change and LuCC will contribute to future runoff intensification,the variation of future runoff under combined climate and LuCC is larger than these under climate change or LuCC alone;2)the projected uncertainty of median value of multi-models under RCP4.5(RCP8.5)will reach 18.14%(20.34%),12.18%(14.71%),11.01%(13.95%),and 11.41%(14.34%)at Baihe,Ankang,Danjiangkou,and Huangzhuang stations,respectively;3)the contribution rate of climate change to runoff at Baihe,Ankang,Danjiangkou,and Huangzhuang stations under RCP4.5(RCP8.5)are 91%-98%(84%-94%),while LuCC to runoff under RCP4.5(RCP8.5)only accounts for 2%-9%(6%-16%)in the annual *** study may provide useful adaptive strategies for policymakers on future water resources planning and management.

land use/land cover represents the interactive and comprehensive influences between human activities and natural conditions, leading to potential conflicts among natural and human-related issues as well as among stakeholders. This study introduced economic standards for farmers. A hybrid approach(CA-ABM)of cellular automaton(CA) and an agent-based model(ABM) was developed to effectively deal with social and land-use synergic issues to examine human–environment interactions and projections of land-use conversions for a humid basin in south China. Natural attributes and socioeconomic data were used to analyze land use/land cover and its drivers of change. The major modules of the CA-ABM are initialization, migration, assets, land suitability, and land-use change decisions. Empirical estimates of the factors influencing the urban land-use conversion probability were captured using parameters based on a spatial logistic regression(sLR) model. simultaneously, multicriteria evaluation(MCE) and Markov models were introduced to obtain empirical estimates of the factors affecting the probability of ecological land conversion. An agent-based CA-sLR-MCE-Markov(ABCsMM) land-use conversion model was proposed to explore the impacts of policies on land-use conversion. This model can reproduce observed land-use patterns and provide links for forest transition and urban expansion to land-use decisions and ecosystem services. The results demonstrated land-use simulations under multi-policy scenarios, revealing the usefulness of the model for normative research on land-use management.
