Since the relationship between angiogenesis and tumor growth was established by Folkman in 1971, scientists have made efforts exploring the possibilities in treating cancer by targeting angiogenesis. Inhibition of angiogenesis growth factors and administration of angiogenesis inhibitors are the basics of anti- angiogenesis therapy. Transfer of anti-angiogenesis genes has received attention recently not only because of the advancement of recombinant vectors, but also because of the localized and sustained expression of therapeutic gene product inside the tumor after gene transfer. This review provides the up-to-date information about the strategies and the vectors studied in the field of anti-angiogenesis cancer gene therapy.

Prospective case series on trabecular-iris angle status after an acute episode of phacomorphic angle closure

AIM:To investigate the trabecular-iris angle with ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) post cataract extraction after an acute attack of phacomorphic angle closure. ·METHODS:This prospective study involved 10 cases of phacomorphic angle closure that underwent cataract extraction and intraocular lens insertion after intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering. Apart from visual acuity and IOP, the trabecular-iris angle was measured by gonioscopy and UBM at 3 months post attack. ·RESULTS:In 10 consecutive cases of acute phaco-morphic angle closure from December 2009 to December 2010, gonioscopic findings showed peripheral anterior synechiae (PAS) ≤90° in 30% of phacomorphic patients and a mean Shaffer grading of (3.1±1.0). UBM showed a mean angle of (37.1°±4.5°) in the phacomorphic eye with the temporal quadrant being the most opened and (37.1°±8.0°) in the contralateral uninvolved eye. The mean time from consultation to cataract extraction was (1.4 ± 0.7) days and the mean total duration of phacomorphic angle closure was (3.6 ±2.8) days but there was no correlation to the degree of angle closure on UBM (Spearman correlation P =0.7). The presenting mean IOP was (50.5±7.4) mmHg and the mean IOP at 3 months was (10.5±3.4) mmHg but there were no correlations with the degree of angle closure (Spearman correlations P =0.9). CONCLUSION:Anopentrabecular-irisangleandnormal IOP can be achieved after an acute attack of pha-comorphic angle closure if cataract extraction is performed within 1 day-2 days after IOP control. Gonioscopic findings were in agreement with UBM,which provided a more specific and object angle measurement. The superior angle is relatively more narrowed compared to the other quadrants. All contralateral eyes in this series had open angles.

A novel metal-free photocatalyst--sulfur/graphene （S/GR） composite--has been synthesized using a facile one-pot, two-step hydrothermal method with thiosulfate and graphene oxide （GO） as precursors. A green reductant--L-ascorbic add--was used to transform GO to GR under mild conditions. The photocatalyst powders were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscop, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Experimental tests were conducted on the photocatalytic decomposition of methyl orange （MO） by different catalysts. Compared to pure oL-S, the as-prepared S/GR composite showed much enhanced photocatalytic activity for the degradation of MO under both UV and solar light. The presence of GR also greatly increased the hydrophilicity and adsorption capacity of the catalyst material. The results indicate that the incorporation of GR with a-S results in a synergistic effect for the S-based photocatalysts offering more effective environmental applications.

The development of an active, durable, and metal-free carbocatalyst that is able to replace metal-based catalysts is of increasing scientific and technological importance. The use of such a catalyst would avoid problems caused by metal- containing catalysts, for example, environmental pollution by heavy metals and depletion of rare metal resources. Herein, an active and durable graphene carbocatalyst is presented for the carbocatalytic conversion of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol at ambient temperature. The carbocatalyst was prepared via a mild, water-based reaction between L-ascorbic acid （AA） and graphene oxide （GO） and did not involve any other reactants. During the structure and catalytic property optimization, a series of carbocatalysts were fabricated at various reaction temperatures and AA/GO ratios. Using several characterization techniques, detailed structural features of these carbocatalysts were identified. Possible active species and sites on the carbocatalysts were also identified such as certain oxygen-containing groups, the ~x-conjugated system, and graphene sheet edges. In addition, the synergistic effect between these active species and sites on the resulting catalytic activity is highlighted. Furthermore, we clarified the origin of the high stability and durability of the optimized carbocatalyst. The work presented here aids the design of high-performance carbocatalysts for hydrogenation reactions, and increases understanding of the structural and mechanistic aspects at the molecular level that lead to high catalyst activity and durability.

Inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver is a rare benign lesion that can mimic a malignant liver nioplasm. A case of inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver found in association with a malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of the small bowel was reported. The inflammatory pseudotumor was misdiagnosed as a metastasis from the GIST by frozen section. A correct diagnosis was made only after histopathological examination of the paraffin section of the resescted specimen. This case is psrticularly interesting because of the association of the two rare pathological entities and the diagnostic dilemma that arose from the similarity of their histological appearances. To our knowledge，this association has not been reported in the literature.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of Young Yum pill (YYP) on inflammatory mediators in cultured RAW 264.7 cells and elucidate the nuclear factor- kappa B (NF-κB)-related mechanism behind the action. METHODS: YYP was extracted with 95% ethanol Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages were used to evaluate the effect of YYP on inflammatory mediators. Production of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) were measured by Griess test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. The levels of genes and proteins involved in the generation of inflammatory mediators were examined using real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting, respectively. RESULTS: YYP dose-dependently suppressed LPS-induced production of NO, PGE2 and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), and elevation of mRNA and protein levels of inducible NO synthase and cyclooxygenase- 2 in RAW 264.7 macrophages. These observations were associated with decreased NF-κB p65 phosphorylation and nuclear localization, enhanced Akt (protein kinase B) phosphorylation, as well as reduced inhibitor of κB (IκB)α degradation and IκB kinase α/β phosphorylation. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated an inhibitory effect of YYP on the NF-κB-regulated inflammatory mediators NO, PGE2 and TNF-α in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages, providing a pharmacological basis for the use of YYP in treating inflammatory disorders.

Clinical significance of serum vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 levels in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM: To evaluate the correlation between serum vascular cellular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) levels and clinicopathological features in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).METHODS: Ninety-six patients who underwent HCC resection were recruited in the study. Preoperative serum levels of soluble VCAM-1 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent ***: Serum VCAM-1 level in HCC patients was inversely correlated with platelet count (r=-0.431,P＜0.001)and serum albumin level (r=-0.279, P＜0.001), and positively correlated with serum bilirubin level (r=-0.379, P＜0.001).Serum VCAM-1 level was not associated with tumor characteristics such as tumor size, venous invasion,presence of microsatellite nodules, tumor grade and tumor stage. Serum VCAM-1 level was significantly higher in HCC patients with cirrhosis compared with those without cirrhosis (median 704 vs 546 ng/mL, P＜0.001). Furthermore, a significantly better disease-free survival was observed in HCC patients with low VCAM-1 level (P=0.019).CONCLUSION: Serum VCAM-1 level appears to reflect the severity of underlying chronic liver disease rather than the tumor status in HCC patients, and low preoperative serum VCAM-1 level is predictive of better disease-free survival after surgery.

Cost-effective, rapid, and accurate virus detection technologies play key roles in reducing viral transmission. Prompt and accurate virus detection enables timely treatment and effective quarantine of virus carrier, and therefore effectively reduces the possibility of large-scale spread. However, conventional virus detection techniques often suffer from slow response, high cost or sophisticated procedures. Recently, two-dimensional(2D) materials have been used as promising sensing platforms for the highperformance detection of a variety of chemical and biological substances. The unique properties of 2D materials, such as large specific area, active surface interaction with biomolecules and facile surface functionalization, provide advantages in developing novel virus detection technologies with fast response and high sensitivity. Furthermore, 2D materials possess versatile and tunable electronic, electrochemical and optical properties, making them ideal platforms to demonstrate conceptual sensing techniques and explore complex sensing mechanisms in next-generation biosensors. In this review, we first briefly summarize the virus detection techniques with an emphasis on the current efforts in fighting again COVID-19. Then, we introduce the preparation methods and properties of 2D materials utilized in biosensors, including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs) and other 2D materials. Furthermore, we discuss the working principles of various virus detection technologies based on emerging 2D materials, such as field-effect transistor-based virus detection, electrochemical virus detection, optical virus detection and other virus detection techniques. Then, we elaborate on the essential works in 2D material-based high-performance virus detection. Finally, our perspective on the challenges and future research direction in this field is discussed.
