Objective: To screen the cytotoxic effects of some marine sponges extracts on HeLa and PC12 ***: Five marine sponges including Ircinia echinata(I. echinata), Dysidea avara,Axinella sinoxea, Haliclona tubifera and Haliclona violacea were collected from the persian gulf(Hengam Island). The cytotoxic effect of these sponges was evaluated by using MTT assay. The metabolic high performance liquid chromatography fingerprint of I. echinata was also carried out at two wavelengths(254 and 280 nm).Results: Among the sponges tested in this study, the extracts of I. echinata and Dysidea avara possessed the cytotoxic effect on HeLa and PC12 cells. The obtained fractions from high performance liquid chromatography were evaluated for their cytotoxic properties against the cell lines. The isolated fractions did not show significant cytotoxic ***: I. echinata could be considered as a potential extract for *** investigation is needed to determine the accuracy of mechanism.

Periconceptional care such as lifestyle plays an important impact role in offspring health. The aim of the present study was to clarify the perspective of Avicenna on periconceptional care. Avicenna(980–1037 A.D.) was one of the outstanding persian physicians, who made great contributions to the field of medical sciences, in particular, obstetrics. In advance, Avicenna's book, Canon of medicine, was considered to find his perspectives on periconceptional care. Then, his ideas and theories were compared to the current findings by searching the keywords in main indexing systems including PubMed/MEDLINE,Scopus and Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science as well as the search engine of Google Scholar. Current investigations show that gamete quality, pregnancy outcome, and offspring health at birth and long term depend on both parents' lifestyle in pre-and periconceptional period, as well as the intrauterine environment. Avicenna believed that seminal fluid, sperm, ovum, and developing conditions in utero were influenced by the stages of food digestion and the function of some *** the other hand, food digestion and function of the organs also depend on each parent's lifestyle and environmental factors. He mentioned 6 principles of healthy lifestyle: exercise, nutrition, sleep and awareness, excretion of body wastes and retention of necessary materials, psychic features, as well as air and climate. Thus, a multicomponent healthy lifestyle should be considered by parents of child-bearing age in an appropriate period before and in early pregnancy as well as elimination of any disorders in parents, to give birth to more healthy offspring.

The role of Chlamydophila pneumoniae in pathogenesis of atherosclerosis is one of the most important discussions in coronary artery diseases. In this study, the relationship between C. pneumoniae seropositivity and atherosclerotic plaque was evaluated among two groups: one group with significant coronary stenosis and one group with normal coronary angiography. Serum C. pneumonia IgM and IgG were evaluated and compared in case and control groups. The seropositivity rates of IgM and IgG antibodies were not statistically differ between case and control groups, although the incidences of positivity were more in case group. The results of our study did not show a correlation between C. pneumonia infection and atherosclerotic plaque or coronary artery stenosis neither in acute nor in chronic infection. More precise studies are needed to clarify the probable inflammatory cascade that starts with C. pneumonia infection and lead to development of atherosclerotic plaque.

Screening bioactive natural products from bacteria is a determinative step in the drug discovery programs. The present study aim to isolate actinobacteria from the Oman Sea sediments for determining the effects of different culture media and treatments on the yield of the isolation process, and measure the DPPH radical scavenging and Artemia cytotoxic activity of culture extracts of the actinobacterial isolates. A total of 290 actinobacterial isolates were collected from 14 sediment samples. Heat treatment(40.68%) and M4 medium(29.31%) exhibited the maximum isolation rates of actinobacteria. Streptomyces isolates were dominantly distributed in all of the investigated stations according to 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. The distribution pattern of Streptomyces followed a depth-dependent frequency trend, whereas the members of rare genera including Micromonospora, Nocardia Actinoplanes, Nocardiopsis, Saccharopolyspora and Crossiella were distributed in deeper stations. Approximately,25% of the examined isolates could scavenge 90% of 10^–4 mol/L DPPH solutions at 1 250 μg/mL final concentration of their ethyl acetate culture extracts. Furthermore, the most potent extracts could scavenge DPPH radicals with IC50 ranges from 356.8 to 566.4 μg/mL. Brine shrimp cytotoxicity tests showed that 38.88% of the examined culture extracts exhibited LC50 lower than 1 000 μg/mL against the Artemia cells. Moreover, the most potent culture extracts exhibited LC50 range from 335.4 to 534.4 μg/mL. Phylogenetic analysis by 16 S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the OS 005, OS 263 and OS 157 closely related to Streptomyces djakartensis, Streptomyces olivaceus and Nocardiopsis dassonvillei respectively. These results suggested the widespread distribution of the antioxidant and cytotoxic producing actinobacteria in the Oman Sea sediments, which could be considered as promising candidates for the discovery of microbial bioactive compounds.

The mucus produced by the outbreak of Phaeocystis globosa in the adjacent waters of the Fangchenggang nuclear Power Plant(FCGNPP) in China has blocked the entrance of the cooling water filtration system of the FCGNPP, and posed a threat to the safe operation of the FCGNPP. At present, there is no related research on whether the changes in seawater viscosity could be used as a new method for monitoring and providing early warning of P. globosa tide. During a complete red tide cycle, the temporal and spatial changes in the hydrological conditions(temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen), chlorophyll-a(Chl-a), composition and abundance of phytoplankton, number and size of P. globose colonies, concentration of transparent exopolymer particles(TEP) and the seawater viscosity were measured in this study. The results indicate that there was an extremely significant negative correlation between the physical seawater viscosity η_(T,S) and temperature, and the correlation coefficient reached-0.998. The biological seawater viscosity η_(Bio) was positively correlated with the number of P. globosa colonies, and the correlation coefficients is 0.747. Because the increase in phytoplankton abundance, especially during the outbreak of P. globosa and a large amount of mucus produced by the colonies could significantly increase seawater viscosity, we suggest that biological factors were the main reasons for the increase in seawater viscosity. The η_(Bio) was completely consistent with the occurrence process of P. globosa bloom and could be used as a valuable index for P. globosa bloom monitoring.

A feeding experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of Bacillus subtilis bacterium and its suitable level on survival and growth rate of juvenile Macrobrachium rosenbergii （de Man） during March 28 to May 28, 2010. A B. subtilis bacterium isolated from chicken intestine was added to commercial prawn feed as a probiotic. Six diets were prepared by soaking prawn feed into the B. subtilis to achieve 10^10, 10^9, 10^8, 10^7 and 106 levels with a non-treated control. After 60 days, the prawns fed diet at level 10^8 showed a higher mean weight gain （593.45 g） or 170.29% increase in growth over control. The mean weight gain showed a decreasing trend as the B. subtilis level decreased from 10^8 to 10^6 and the B. subtilis level increased from 10^8 to 10^10 in the diets. There were significant differences （P 〈 0.05） in weight gain, feed intake, daily growth and feed conversion ratio （FCR） among treated and controlled groups. There were significant differences （P 〈 0.05） among treatments and control in survival rate but no significant differences （P 〉 0.05） in water quality and biochemical composition among treated and controlled groups. Clearly, treated with B. subtilis appeared to enhance growth and survival of M. rosenbergii. It was concluded that the tested strain may be a promising probiotics for M. rosenbergii at a level of 10^8 B. subtilis into the prawn feed.
