Biobed is a smart bioremediation system used to treat point-source pesticide *** is the main component of biobeds,and pesticide dissipation is affected by its *** study aimed to compare the effectiveness of compost-based(C)versus peat-moss-based(P)biomixtures of biobeds on tested pesticide *** concentrations(25,50,and 75 mg/kg)of chlorpyrifos,pendimethalin,and thiophanate methyl were added separately and as a mix to both biomixtures C and *** data showed the effect of biomixture type on the dissipation of the tested *** chlorpyrifos,its dissipation rate in biomixture P was more rapid than that in biomixture *** result was confirmed by the mineralization kinetic experiment,since 25%of the initial ^(14)C-chlorpyrifos concentration accumulated in the form ^(14)CO_(2) in biomixture P compared to only 14%in biomixture *** addition,the chlorpyrifos dissipation rate was influenced by the initial concentration when applied individually in biomixture *** contrast,biomixture C was more effective at pendimethalin dissipation than biomixture P,since>76%of pendimethalin was dissipated in biomixture C versus 67%in biomixture P at the same incubation *** thiophanate-methyl,the abilities of both biomixtures C and P were similar and less efficient than those of the other tested *** addition of the three tested pesticides to biomixture C only had a positive effect on both chlorpyrifos and thiophanate-methyl dissipation,while pendimethalin dissipation was similar when applied separately or as a *** activity was stimulated by the addition of separately or mixed pesticides to biomixtures C and P as measured by dehydrogenase activity.

Characterization of QTL for unique agronomic traits of new-plant-type rice varieties using introgression lines of IR64

Relationship Between the N Concentration of the Leaf Subtending Boll and the Cotton Fiber Quality

This experiments were conducted in Nanjing （118~50＂E, 32~02＂N） and Xuzhou （117~11 ＂E, 34~15＂N）, Jiangsu Province, China, to study the response of fiber quality to the N concentration of the leaf subtending boll in cotton （Gossypium hirsutum L.）. Results suggested that the N dilution curve of the leaf subtending boll can accurately indicate the stage- specific plant N status for fiber development. Fiber strength is likely to be the most variable fiber quality index responding to the leaf N variation which is different in cultivars. Fiber length was the most stable index among strength, length, micronaire, and elongation. There existed an optimum leaf N concentration for fiber strength development in each stage. The optimum leaf N regression curve was very close to the N dilution curve in the middle positional fruiting branches under the 240 kg N ha-1 soil N application rate.

Breeding of male-sterile lines has become the mainstream for the heterosis utilization in foxtail millet,but the genetic basis of most male-sterile lines used for the hybrid is still an area to be *** this study,a highly male-sterile line Gao146A was *** analysis indicated that the highly male-sterile phenotype was controlled by a single recessive gene a single recessive *** F 2 population derived from cross Gao146A/K103,one gene controlling the highly male- sterility,tentatively named as ms1,which linked to SSR marker b234 with genetic distance of 16.7 cM,was mapped on the chromosome *** results not only laid the foundation for fine mapping of this highly male-sterile gene,but also helped to accelerate the improvement of highly male-sterile lines by using molecular marker assisted breeding method.

Aegilops tauschii Ais a wild relative of common wheat(Triticum aestivum) and acts as an important resource of elite genes including genes for resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. To improve the cadmium(Cd) tolerance of wheat varieties using A. tauschii resources, we investigated the genetic variation of biomass-based Cd tolerance in 235 A. tauschii accessions treated with 0(control) and100 μmol L-1CdC l2(as Cd stress). Simultaneously, we performed a genomewide association study(GWAS) using a single-nucleotide polymorphism chip containing 7185 markers. Six markers were found to be significantly associated with Cd tolerance by a general linear model and a mixed linear model. These markers were close to several candidate/flanking genes associated with Cd tolerance according to results in public databases, including pdil5-1, Acc-1, DME-5A,TaA P2-D, TaA P2-B, Vrn-B1, and FtsH-like protein gene. The A. tauschii accessions were classified as high, moderate, and low Cd-tolerant according to a secondary index, the synthetic index(SI), in proportions of 9%, 57%, and 34%, respectively. By the average SI, accessions from Afghanistan,Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Iran showed relatively high Cd tolerance.

Evaluation of glacial resource potential for sustaining kuhl irrigation system under changing climate in the Himalayan region

A large numbers of mountain communities in the Himalayan region depend on glacier-fed kuhl system – gravity flow irrigation, for their sustenance. The depletion and retreat of glaciers often result in disruption of melt flows to kuhl system, which ultimately impacts the agriculture as well as livelihood of the local communities. Sustainability of glacial resource was assessed for establishing kuhl irrigation system based on indices of glacier decrease by number(GDN) and glacier depletion by volume(GDV) during the 2001-2013 period. The selected factors are important in terms of understanding point source and reserve potential of glaciers for sustaining glacier-fed kuhl irrigation in this region. The sustainability of glaciers was found good(i.e. a least decrease or rather increase in glacier number and volume) in about 23.6% glaciers(ice reserves about 705.9 km^3) under >10 km^2 area class of glaciers mainly in Gilgit and Shigar river basins of the Karakoram range. In the 5–10 km^2 class of glaciers, sustainability was good in 49 glaciers(ice reserve 26.59 km^3) and under 1–5 km^2 class, in 558 glaciers(ice reserve 60.189 km^3). Overall sustainability of glaciers appears to prevail in the Karakoram basins. The lesser sustainability of glaciers in the Himalaya basins like Astore and Jhelum would apparently be compensated by monsoon and change in rainfall pattern. A regular monitoring of the glacier resource and utilizing advance water conservation techniques would help in coping with negative impacts of downwasting of glaciers and provide long-term support to kuhl irrigation system in the Himalayan region in future.

Crop phosphorus(P) deficiency and poor utilization of added P is a major agricultural problem due to reduced solubility of soil P and rapid fixation or precipitation of applied P fertilizer in alkaline and calcareous soils. The effects of P-enriched compost and single superphosphate(SSP) fertilization on maize and wheat yields and P use efficiency in a maize–wheat rotation system were studied for three years. On a three-year average, grain yields of maize and wheat after application of P-enriched compost were increased by 18% and 24%, respectively, in comparison with sole addition of a recommended dose of SSP fertilizer. P-enriched compost addition to soil increased maize and wheat yields by 12% and 17%, respectively, compared to P fertilizer plus FYM incorporation. Soil available P concentration and P uptake were affected significantly by the addition of P-enriched compost. On average, increases in P recovery, use efficiency, and agronomic efficiency of 52%, 18%, and 43% were recorded in maize and increases of 50%, 23%, and 49% in wheat. P-enriched compost application yielded 30% and 32%higher economic returns in maize and wheat than SSP fertilization alone.
