Aim： To complete comprehensive haplotype analysis of USP26 for both fertile and infertile men. Methods： Two hundred infertile men with severe oligospermia or non-obstructive azoospermia were subjected to sequence analysis for the entire coding sequences of the USP26 gene. Two hundred men with proven fertility were genotyped by primer extension methods. Allele/genotype frequencies, linkage disequilibrium （LD） characteristics and haplotypes of fertile men were compared with infertile men. Results： The allele frequencies of five single nucleotide polymor- phisms （370-37 linsACA, 494T〉C, 576G〉A, ss6202791C〉T, 1737G〉A） were significantly higher in infertile patients than control subjects. The major haplotypes in infertile men were TACCGA （28% of the population）, TGCCGA （15%）, TACCAA （8%）, TGCCAA （6%）, TATCAA （5%） and CATCAA （5%）. The major haplotypes for the control subjects were TACCGA （58% of the population）, CACCGA （7%）, CATCGA （6%） and TGCCGA （5%）. Haplotypes TGCCGA, TATCAA, CATCAA, CATCGC, TACCAA and TGCCAA were over-transmitted in patients with spermato- genic defect, whereas haplotypes TACCGA, CACCGA, and CATCGA were under-transmitted in these patients. Conclusion： Some USP26 alleles and haplotypes are associated with spermatogenic defect in the Han nationality in taiwan, china.

To analyze the learning curve for cancer control from an initial 250 cases （Group I） and subsequent 250 cases （Group II） of robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy （RALP） performed by a single surgeon. Five hundred consecutive patients with clinically localized prostate cancer received RALP and were evaluated. Surgical parameters and perioperative complications were compared between the groups, Positive surgical margin （PSM） and biochemical recurrence （BCR） were assessed as cancer control outcomes. Patients in Group II had significantly more advanced prostate cancer than those in Group I （22.2% vs 14.2%, respectively, with Gleason score 8-10, P = 0.033; 12.8% vs 5.6%, respectively, with clinical stage T3, P = 0.017）. The incidence of PSM in pT3 was decreased significantly from 49% in Group I to 32.6% in Group Ih A meaningful trend was noted for a decreasing PSM rate with each consecutive group of 50 cases, including pT3 and high-risk patients. Neurovascular bundle （NVB） preservation was significantly influenced by the PSM in high-risk patients （84.1% in the preservation group vs 43.9% in the nonpreservation group）. The 3-year, 5-year, and 7-year BCR-free survival rates were 79.2%, 75.3%, and 70.2%, respectively. In conclusion, the incidence of PSM in pT3 was decreased significantly after 250 cases. There was a trend in the surgical learning curve for decreasing PSM with each group of 50 cases. NVB preservation during RALP for the high-risk group is not suggested due to increasing PSM.

This study is aimed to investigate and analyze the vegetation landscape around Rivers of Hou-lung, Fa-tz, Da-li, Ching-shuei and Gau- ping, and to select the suitable plant species that could be applied for the area of riverbank ecological engineering in taiwan. Studying the vegetation established the key point and procedure of ecological engineering in the riverside and revetment, to compile and edit the dominant plants＇ types, life form, propagating method, root systems＇ characteristics and functions for soil conservation. This research choses three dominant plants for roots strength test. The fitting models of plants pulling resistance（Rp, kg） between plant height （H, cm）, diameter near ground （Dn, mm）, diameter above ground 100 mm （Da, mm）, The research finished the relative abundant, types and cluster analysis of riverbank dominant plants that generalize vegetative distribution and ecological restoration for different river types to apply and manage in taiwan.

Circulations　east　of　taiwan　and　in　East　china　Sea　and　east　of　Ryukyu　Islands　during　early　summer　1985

A modified inverse method is used to compute the circulations east of taiwan and in the East china Sec and east of the Ryukyu Islands with hydrographic data obtained during early summer of 1985. The computational region covers an area west of 129°E and from 21°45'N to 35°N. The computed results show that: (1 ) The net volume transport (VT ) of the Kuroshio through 21°45'N Section east of Ta taiwan and west of 123°E is about 45 × 10￣6 m￣3/sduring early summer of 1985. The Kuroshio has. two current cores. One is located near taiwan, and its velocity isvery large and its maximum velocity is 226 cm/s at the 100 m level, which is close to the maximum velocity of the beginning of the Kuroshio east of the Philippines. The other is located further to the east, and its maximum velocity is159 cm/s at the 100m level; (2) through a transect northwest Of Miyakojima Island and a transect southwest of Okinawa laaed the volume transports of the Kuroshio in the East china Sea both are about 25 × 10￣6 m￣3/s. The maximumvelocity of the Kuroshio at these two sections is 194 and 128 cm/s, respectively, and both are located on the shelfbreak; (3) beneath and east of the Kurohio there are the countercurrent (4) southeast of Okinawa Island there is anortheastward current, and its VT at Section HI is about 12. 6 × 10￣6 m￣3/s, and it comes from a westward flow at 129° This project was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of china under contract No. 49476278.(Second Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration, Hongzhou310012, china) (Institute of Oceanography, taiwan University, Taipei, china)E Section and the recirculating gyre, and does not originate from the Kuroshio east of taiwan during early summer of 1985. There are glacial remains of three different periods on the main peak of Snow Mountain in taiwan province, including cirque lake, crosswall, polished surface, striation, moraine ete. These three different periods were called, respectively, Shanzhuang ((44.25 ± 3.72) kaBP), Shuiyuan ((18.26 ± 1.52) kaBP), and Xueshan glacial stages (the late period of last glaciation). it is characterized by the earlier glacier broad in scale.

Correlation Fractal and Multifractal Characteristics of Seismic Activity in the taiwan Region, china

Based on the analysis of newly collected data of plate tectonics, distribution of active faults and crustal deformation, the taiwan Region is divided into two seismic regions and six seismic belts. Then, correlation fractal dimensions of all the regions and belts are calculated, and the fractal characteristics of hypocenteral distribution can be quantitatively analyzed. Finally, multifractal dimensions D q and f(α) are calculated by using the earthquake catalog of the past 11 years in the taiwan Region. This study indicates that (1) there exists a favorable corresponding relationship between spatial images of seismic activity described with correlation fractal dimension analysis and tectonic settings; (2) the temporal structure of earthquakes is not single but multifractal fractal, and the pattern of D q variation with time is a good indicator for predicting strong earthquake events.

Population aging has developed into a significant area of concern in developed countries, especially in relation to thepreservation of functional independence and the quality of life (QoL). However, information on the contribution ofsex differences in quality of life and cognitive function is scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate potentialdifferences in cognitive function and QoL between males and females. For this study, we recruited 382 healthy subjectsaged 19–79 years from communities in Southern taiwan region,china. Cognitive function and QoL were assessed using the UCSD Performance-based Skills Assessment, Brief Version (UPSA-B) and World Health Organization Quality ofLife Instruments (WHOQOL-BREF), respectively. The effects of sex, age groups, and interaction of sex and ageon the UPSA-B and WHOQOL-BREF scores were examined. We found that the financial and communicationdomains of the UPSA-B showed declining trends with age in both sexes, although these trends were more obviousin females than in males. In the domain of Physical Capacity, QoL showed an age-increased trend in males, whileQoL in the Environment domain showed an age-increased trend in females. Regarding the relationships betweencognitive function and QoL, we found that the financial skill and communication skill of UPSA-B was positivelycorrelated to the psychological well-being domain of WHOQOL-BREF, in males of age <40 years. In conclusion,our findings demonstrate differential relationships between cognitive function and QoL between males and females,which could serve as a basis for further study between cognitive function and quality of life in communities.

Improving the Extreme Rainfall Forecast of Typhoon Morakot(2009) by Assimilating Radar Data from taiwan Island and china's Mainland

This study examined the impact of an improved initial field through assimilating ground-based radar data from china's Mainland and taiwan Island to simulate the long-lasting and extreme rainfall caused by Morakot（2009）. The vortex location and the subsequent track analyzed through the radial velocity data assimilation（VDA） are generally consistent with the best track. The initial humidity within the radar detecting region and Morakot＇s northward translation speed can be significantly improved by the radar reflectivity data assimilation（ZDA）. As a result, the heavy rainfall on both sides of taiwan Strait can be reproduced with the joint application of VDA and ZDA. Based on sensitivity experiments, it was found that, without ZDA, the simulated storm underwent an unrealistic inward contraction after 12-h integration, due to underestimation of humidity in the global reanalysis, leading to underestimation of rainfall amount and coverage. Without the vortex relocation via VDA, the moister（drier） initial field with（without） ZDA will produce a more southward（northward） track, so that the rainfall location on both sides of taiwan Strait will be affected. It was further found that the improvement in the humidity field of Morakot is mainly due to assimilation of high-value reflectivity（strong convection） observed by the radars in taiwan Island, especially at Kenting station. By analysis of parcel trajectories and calculation of water vapor flux divergence, it was also found that the improved typhoon circulation through assimilating radar data can draw more water vapor from the environment during the subsequent simulation, eventually contributing to the extreme rainfall on both sides of taiwan Strait.

Aim： To compare the results of bladder tumor associated antigen （BTA TRAK）, nuclear matrix protein 22 （NMP 22） and voided urine cytology （VUC） in detecting bladder cancer. Methods： A total of 135 elderly male and 50 healthy volunteers enrolled in this study were classified into three groups：（i） 93 patients with bladder cancer; （ii） 42 patients with urinary benign conditions; and （iii） 50 healthy volunteers. BTA TRAK and NMP 22 kits were used to detect bladder cancer. Voided urine cytology was used to compare the sensitivity and specificity of the screening tests. Results： The sensitivity and specificity of cytology, BTA TRAK and NMP 22 were 24% and 97%, 51% and 73%, 78% and 73%, respectively. The level of NMP 22 increased with tumor grading. The BTA TRAK kit has the lowest sensitivity among the screening tests. The NMP 22 with the best sensitivity can be an adjunct to cytology for evaluating bladder cancer. Conclusion： The NMP 22 test has a better correlation with the grading of the bladder cancer than BTA TRAK. As cytology units are typically not available in hospitals or in outpatient clinics, NMP 22 might be a promising tool for screening bladder cancer.
