Driver’s Critical Gap Calibration at Urban Roundabouts: A Case Study in China

Roundabouts have been used successfully in cities throughout the world and are wildly used in China, The critical gap is a required parameter for calculating the capacity of roundabouts and deciding the needs for stop signs, While many studies on gap acceptance characteristics at roundabouts have been carried out in America and Europe, few have been done in China, This study was conducted to calibrate the critical gap in a roundabout in China, The differences between critical gaps on different days （workdays and weekends） and during different times （rush hour and non rush hour） were checked. The study was performed at a three-lane roundabout formed by a two-way and four-lane local road and a six-lane divided artery. The data was collected at this site by a video camera. The evaluations included the cumulative probability distributions of the acceptable and rejected gaps which resulted in critical gaps for all cases. The results show that the critical gap during the rush hour is shorter than after the rush hour, but the difference is not large and the cumulative probability distributions can be fit by the logit functional form with parameters estimated using linear regression.

Crumble rubber(CR)can be used to prepare CR and styrene-butadiene-styrene(SBS)composite modified asphalt with a good high-and low-temperature performance,meanwhile the addition of CR could work as the substitute for SBS and help reduce the content of *** study contains three main parts:effect of preparation and effect of material composition as well as rheological performance *** during the preparation,including shearing temperature,shearing time,mixing time and swelling time,were selected,while base binder,CR content,CR particle size and SBS content in material composition were *** effects of these factors were assessed in terms of the conventional performance(penetration,softening point,ductility and storage stability).After identifying these effects,the sample of CR and SBS modified asphalt at the selected preparing condition and material composition(CR/SBSMA)was made,and the corresponding SBS modified and CR modified asphalt(SBSMA and CRMA)were produced for the comparing ***,temperature sweeps from 0℃ to 80℃ were utilized to depict the viscoelasticity of these modified asphalt binders by complex modulus and phase *** stress creep recovery tests(MSCR)at 64℃ and bending beam rheometer tests(BBR)at various low temperatures were employed to evaluate the high-and low-temperature performance,*** highlight that that CR/SBSMA could exhibit an excellent high-temperature performance(better than SBSMA),and a good low-temperature performance(reaching the level of base binder).

At the moment when many Chinese cities are undertaking the tasks of compiling new city comprehensive planning and carrying out the pilot work of multi-plan integration, this paper analyzes the relationship between the two tasks, and then reviews the role and contents, as well as the procedure of formulation, examination and approval of city comprehensive planning. The real meaning of multi-plan integration is to put multiple plans in one framework for coordinated operation, within which city comprehensive planning should be more strategy-oriented and be considered together with other plans, such as spatial development at the city-region level and structural management at the city and township levels.

The trend of climate warming and deeper globalization is adding new content to urban risks in shanghai, resulting in the adaption of traditional comprehensive defense planning to the new environment. Based on the resilient city theory, this paper proposes a transition for shanghai from an original comprehensive defense to a resilient city vision through strategic framework and approaches from the three aspects of engineering technology, spatial defense, and social governance in the New Normal age. Meanwhile, it suggests that shanghai should use information technology to enhance the level of risk monitoring and to improve engineering design standards; strengthen the resilience from the scales of "life circle-urban circle-municipal administrative area"; and innovate as well as improve the social safety governance.

In 2015,the Study of Xi’an Historic Walled city Regeneration Strategy applied the Historic Urban Landscape(HUL)Approach through experimenting and testing digital technologies following recommended action steps of HUL *** the context of urbanisation and heritage deterioration happened past decades in Chinese cities,this paper proposes an innovative HUL Information System that can be used to integrate the approach and technical support *** enables comprehensive identification of spatial-temporal relativity of urban landscape morphology,linking between the past and *** use of spatial digital tools such as aerial photo modeling,geographic information system analysis,and space syntax is explored to trace the continuity of the historical landscape in the built *** research team uncovered the context of Xi’an’s cultural and historical landscape through historical literature and related studies over past decades,and summarised and obtained a spatial data set for the dominant historical landscape pattern of the walled city *** with the existing spatial pattern identified by digital tools,the findings showed similarity with historical landscape patterns,including part of a fengshui landform,the 17^(th) to 19^(th) century water system,and an evolving community *** could be explained by the literature and academic research,which demonstrates the influence of historic landscape system in urban *** research aims to show the potential of the HUL Information System as a technical support for urban conservation in Chinese cities,particularly with regard to mapping resources,which is fundamental toward other relevant steps in the HUL approach.

Optimal retrofit of low-performance units(LPUs)is promising to abate overflow pollutant mass loading of sewer systems during *** study presents a combination of mathematical model and Sobol algorithm to help identify LPUs of sewer systems and design retrofitting ***,the solution to minimize the overflow pollutant mass loading from sewers systems can be efficiently *** developed method was demonstrated at a catchment served by one wastewater treatment plant in the Chaohu city,Anhui Province of China,with five pumping stations and a total sewer length of 58.3 *** the catchment,there are three rivers and a small lake to receive overflows from the sewer *** them,one river that was mostly polluted was selected as the object of overflow pollution abatement during wet weather *** identifying the LPUs of the sewer system and developing retrofitting strategies using Sobol sequence,the mitigation of overflow pollution during wet weather period was *** show that the mass loading of chemical oxygen demand(COD)discharged into the target river could be reduced by 40.6%,by implementing optimal retrofit strategy of LPUs,i.e.,increasing the conveyance capacities of two pumping stations by 2.5–3.2 times and augmenting the diameters of 12 sewers by 1.25–1.29 *** further coordinate the abatement of overflow pollution and retrofit investment,Sobol sensitivity analysis was conducted to screen the dominant LPUs to update the optimal retrofit *** applying the updated strategy,the overflow COD mass loading per overflow event was close to that of non-updated strategy,while the retrofitting length of sewers was reduced by 40%.Therefore,on the basis of the presented method,decision-makers can flexibly develop retrofitting strategies of sewer system to abate overflow pollution during wet weathers in a cost-effective way.

With urban residents’increasing reliance on metro systems for commuting and other daily activities,extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall and flooding impacting the metro system services are becoming increasingly of *** for such emergency interruptions require a thorough understanding of the potential outcomes on both the system and individual component ***,due to the complex dynamics,constraints,and interactions of the elements involved(e.g.,disaster,infrastructure,service operation,and travel behavior),there is still no framework that comprehensively evaluates the system performance across different spatiotemporal scales and is flexible enough to handle increasingly detailed travel behavior,transit service,and disaster information *** on an agent-based model(ABM)framework,this study adopts a data-driven ABM simulation approach informed by actual metro operation and travel demand data to investigate the impact of flood-induced station closures on travelers as well as the overall system response.A before-after comparison is conducted where the traveler behaviors in disaster scenarios are obtained from a discrete choice model of alternative stations and routes.A case study of the shanghai Metro is used to demonstrate the ability of the proposed approach in evaluating the impacts of flood-induced station closures on individual traveler behavior under normal operation and a series of water level rise scenarios of up to *** was found that,when the flood-induced station closures only affect a few river-side stations in the city center,the travelers experience only minor disruptions to their trips due to the availability of unaffected stations nearby as a ***,as the water level increases and more stations(mainly in the suburban area)are affected,up to 25%of trips are no longer being fulfilled due to the loss of entrances,exits,or transfer *** system experiences overall less crowdedness in terms of passenger volume and

With the expansion of urban area and development of taxi system,problems arise,such as low operation efficiency,high taxi idling rate,and long passenger waiting-time. Although various studies have been conducted,only limited overview of the factors towards urban taxi system has been provided. Consequently,a comprehensive evaluation of taxi system is essential for the urban planner to analyze the current situation and take effective measures. This paper,by using Floating Car Data( FCD),proposes a comprehensive Taxi Assessment Index( CTAI) to quantify the quality of existing urban taxi system with the assistance of Geographic Information System( GIS) technology. The proposed index system extracts and classifies key factors,reflecting the taxi system from the perspectives of operation efficiency,customer and taxi-driver satisfaction. The system contributes to improving the organization and operation of urban taxi system. Based on the data obtained from the city of Shenzhen,Guangdong Province,China,for both weekday and weekends( Dec.,2011),the proposed CTAI was illustrated by using the Principal Component Analysis( PCA) with ArcGIS 10. 0 platform. The results indicate that the system provides a good multi-dimensional view to delve into the existing urban taxi operation, thus to point out the most sensitive indices towards the entire system,which consequently provides guidelines for future improvement and management of urban taxi system.
