Distribution characteristics of poly-and perfluoroalkyl substances in the Yangtze River Delta

In this work, a method was developed and optimized for the analysis of polyfluoroalkyl and/or perfluoroalkyl substances（PFASs） content in surface water and sediment samples with high instrumental response and good separation. Surface water and sediment samples were collected from the Yangtze River Delta（YRD） to analyze the distribution characteristics of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids（PFCAs）, perfluoroalkane sulfonic acids（PFSAs）, perfluoroalkyl phosphonic acids（PFPAs）, perfluoroalkyl phosphinic acids（PFPiAs）, and polyfluoroalkyl phosphoric acid diesters（di PAPs）. The results showed that the total concentrations of PFCAs and PFSAs in YRD varied from 31 to 902 ng/L. PFCAs（≥ 11 carbons） and PFSAs（≥ 10 carbons atoms） were not detected in any surface water samples. The mean concentrations of all PFCAs and PFSAs in surface water from the sampling areas decreased in the following order：Yangtze river（191 ng/L） ≈ Taihu lake（189 ng/L）〉 Huangpu river（122 ng/L） ≈ Qiantang river（120 ng/L）〉 Jiaxing urban river（100 ng/L）. Strong significant（p 〈 0.05） correlations between the concentrations of many of the compounds were found in the sampling areas, suggesting a common source for these compounds. Only perfluorooctanoic acid（PFOA） was observed in all sediment samples, at concentrations varying from 0.02 to 1.35 ng/g. Finally, detection rates of two di PAPs were only 8% and 10%, respectively and the concentration of di PAPs was two to three times lower compared to PFCAs and PFSAs.

A Sensitive Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering Method for Determination of Melamine with Aptamer-modified Nanosilver Probe

The small nanosilver was prepared by the sodium borohydride procedure. The aptamer was used to modify nanosilver to obtain a nanosilver-aptamer （AgssDNA） SERS probe for the determination of melamine. In pH 6.6 phosphate buffer solution and in the presence of NaCI, the AgssDNA probe specifically combined with melamine to release nanosilver particles that were aggregated to nanosilver clusters, which exhibited SERS effect at 240 cm-1. When melamine concentration increased, the nanosilver clusters increased, and the SERS intensity at 240 cm-1 in- creased. The increased SERS intensity AI240cm, is linear to melamine concentration in the range of 6.3--403.6 μg.L 1, with a detection limit of 1.2 μg L 1. Impact of livelihood diversification of rural households on their ecological footprint in agro-pastoral areas of northern China

Human-environment relationship is a focus of academic researches and an understanding of the rela- tionship is important for making effective policies and decisions. In this study, based on rural household survey data of Taibus Banner, Duolun county and Zhengxiangbai Banner in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region of China, we identified the impact of livelihood diversification on ecosystems in these agro-pastoral areas by using the ecological footprint theory and methodology together with the one-way analysis of variance （ANOVA） and correlation analysis methods. In 2011, the total ecological footprint of consumption （EFC） was 0.665 g hm2, and the total ecological footprint of production （EFP） was 2.045 g hm2, which was more than three times the EFC. The ecological footprint of arable land consumption （EFAC） accounted for a large proportion of the EFC, and the ecological footprint of grassland production （EFGP） occupied a large proportion of the EFP. Both the ecological footprint of grassland consumption （EFGC） and EFGP had a significant positive correlation with the income, indicating that income was mainly depended on livestock production and the households with higher incomes consumed more livestock prod- ucts. The full-time farming households （FTFHs） had the highest EFP, ecological footprint of arable land production （EFAP）, EFGP and EFGC, followed by the part-time farming households （PTFHs） and non-farming households （NFHs）, which indicated that part-time farming and non-farming employment reduced the occupancy and con- sumption of rural households on local ecosystems and natural resources to some extent. When farming households engaged in livestock rearing, both the EFAP and EFAC became smaller, while the EFP, EFC, EFGC and EFGP increased significantly. Photochemical properties and source of pollutants during continuous pollution episodes in Beijing, October, 2011

Beijing suffered from serious air pollution in October, 2011 with the occurrence of three continuous episodes. Here we analyze the pollution status of particulate matter, the relationship between the gaseous pollutants, physical and chemical properties of single particles, and the profile of water-soluble ions in PM2.5 during the three episodes. Regional and photochemically aged air masses, which were characterized as having high values of O3 and SO2, were hypothesized to have played a dominant role in the first episode. After mixing local air masses with freshly-emitted primary pollutants, the concentration of NOx continued to increase and the size of SO42-, NO3- and NH4＋ in the particle population continued to become smaller. The amount of elemental carbon-rich and organic carbonrich particles in the scaled single particles （0.2-2 μm） and water-soluble K＋ in PM2.s also increased in the episodes. All the available information suggests that the biomass or fuel burning sources in or around Beijing may have had a huge impact on the last two episodes.

Optimization of sampling frequency for routine river water quality monitoring

Sampling frequency is an important factor to be considered during the design of a water monitoring network,and the cost-effective selection of possible ways and means for the optimization of sampling frequency is still *** paper introduces water pollution index deviation ratio comparison(WPI DRC),a procedure for the optimization of sampling frequency for a routine river water quality monitoring *** frequency optimized using WPI DRC at monitoring station X5 in the mainstream of Xiangjiang River is compared with that established using the traditional Statistical Algorithm *** result of comparison indicates that WPI DRC is more feasible than the traditional *** then,the sampling frequencies for other 16 monitoring stations also have been optimized,and the results show the sampling frequencies of all the stations except that X4 are reduced,and there is no unacceptable difference between water quality evaluation results at 17 stations before and after the ***,it is concluded that WPI DRC is an effective optimization process with operable results,which can be used to fulfill the requirement of practical monitoring work.

Diversity and distribution of bacterial community in the coastal sediments of Bohai Bay,China

In order to understand the diversity and distribution of the bacterial community in the coastal sediment of the Bohai Bay, China, high-throughput barcoded pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA gene was used. Metagenomic DNA was extracted from the sediment samples, and was sequenced using a 454 GS FLX Titanium system. At 97% similarity, the sequences were assigned to 22 884 operational taxonomic units （OTUs） which belonged to 41 phyla, 84 classes, 268 genera and 789 species. At the different taxonomic levels, both the dominants and their distribution varied significantly among the six coastal sediments. Proteobacteria was the first dominant phylum across all the six coastal sediments, representing 57.52%, 60.66%, 45.10%, 60.92%, 56.63% and 56.59%, respectively. Bacteroidetes was the second dominant phylum at Stas S1, S2 and S4, while Chloroflexi was the second dominant phylum at Stas S3, S5 and S6. At class level, γ-Proteobacteria was the first dominant class at Stas S1,S2, S4 andS6, while δ-Proteobacteria became the first dominant class at Stas S3 and S5. In addition, a large proportion of unclassified representatives have distributed at the different taxonomic levels. Canonical correspondence analysis （CCA） results indicated that the sediment texture, water depth （D）, dissolved oxygen （DO）, total nitrogen （TN） and nine EPA priority control polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） including naphthalene, acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, fluorine, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo[a]anthracene and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene were the important factors in regulating the bacterial community composition. Those results are very important to further understand the roles of bacterial community in the coastal biogeochemical cycles.

Accelerated oxidation of VOCs via vacuum ultraviolet photolysis coupled with wet scrubbing process

Vacuum ultraviolet(VUV) photolysis is a facile method for volatile organic compounds(VOCs) elimination, but is greatly limited by the relatively low removal efficiency and the possible secondary pollution. To overcome above drawbacks, we developed an efficient method for VOCs elimination via VUV photolysis coupled with wet scrubbing process. In this coupled process, volatile toluene, a representative of VOCs, was oxidized by the gas-phase VUV photolysis, and then scrubbed into water for further oxidation by the liquid-phase VUV photolysis. More than 96% of toluene was efficiently removed by this coupled process, which was 2 times higher than that in the gas-phase VUV photolysis. This improvement was attributed to the synergistic effect between gas-phase and liquid-phase VUV photolysis. O3and HO·are the predomination reactive species for the toluene degradation in this coupled process, and the generation of O3in gas-phase VUV photolysis can efficiently enhance the HO·production in liquid-phase VUV photolysis. The result from in-situ proton transfer reaction ionization with mass analyzer(PTR-MS) further suggested that most intermediates were trapped by the wet scrubbing process and efficiently oxidized by the liquid-phase VUV photolysis, showing a high performance for controlling the secondary pollution. Furthermore, the result of stability test and the reuse of solution demonstrated that this coupled process has a highly stable and sustainable performance for toluene degradation. This study presents an environmentally benign and highly efficient VUV photolysis for gaseous VOCs removal in the wet scrubbing process.

Integrated biomarkers in wild crucian carp for early warning of water quality in Hun River, North China

Metabolizing enzymes play important roles in the detoxification of various pollutants in aquatic organisms, thereby they can also be used to provide early-warning signals of environmental risks. Real-time quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction assays were developed to quantify cytochrome P450 1A （CYP1A）, superoxide dismutase （SOD）, glutathione peroxidase （GPx）, catalase （CAT）, and glutathione-S-transferase （GST） in crucian carp （Carassius auratus）. The methods were then used to detect the respective mRNA expression levels in liver tissue in wild crucian carp from the Hun River, North China. CYP1A mRNA expression was significantly up-regulated in fish from stations $5, $6, and $8 （p 〈 0.05）. SOD mRNA expression was significantly down-regulated in downstream areas relative to fish from upstream sites （p 〈 0.05）; GPx and CAT mRNA expression levels were also down-regulated at $9 （p 〈 0.05）. In contrast, GST mRNA expression showed no obvious change between fish collected from up- or downstream areas of the river. Finally, an integrated biomarker response was used to evaluate the integrated impact of pollutants in the Hun River and allow better comprehension of the real toxicological risk of these investigated sites.

A New Nanocatalytic Spectrophotometric Assay for Cationic Surfactant Using Phosphomolybdic Acid-Formic Acid-Nanogold as Indicator Reaction

In the pH 7.4 Na2HPO4-NaH2PO4 buffer solution, the cationic surfactant （CS） interacted with nanogold particles （NG） to form NG aggregations （NGA） that resulted in its color changing from wine red to blue-violet. NG has a strong catalysis on the formic acid-phosphomolybdic acid （PMo） colored reaction, but that of the NGA catalysis is weak. With the increase of CS concentration, the NGA increased and the NG decreased, the catalysis decreased and the absorption value at 700 nm decreased linearly. The concentrations of 6.25-250 nmol/L tetradecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride （TDBAC）, 0.625-250 nmol/L cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide （CTMAB） and 12.5 -500 nmol-L 1 dodecyldimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride （DDBAC） had good linear responses to the decreased absorption value （AA70o nm）, with molar absorption coefficients of 2.2 × 106, 2.1 × 106 and 9 ×105 Lomol *** 1 respectively. This method was simple, highly sensitive and low-cost.
