The purpose of this study was to investigate the cortical bone thickness of the inter-dental area of both jaws for orthodontic miniscrew placement. The cone-beam computerized tomography images of 32 non-orthodontic adults with normal occlusion were taken to measure the cortical bone thick- ness in ***. One-way analysis of variance （ANOVA） was used to analyze the differences in cortical bone thickness. Buccal cortical bone in the mandible was thicker than that in the maxilla. In the maxilla, cortical bone thickness was thicker in the buccal side than in the palatal side. Buccal cortical bone thickness in the mandible was thickest at the site distal to the first molar, and in the maxilla it was thickest at the site mesial to the first molar, while in the palatal side of maxilla it was thickest at the site mesial to the second premolar. The changing pattern of cortical bone thickness varies at different sites. In the buccal side of maxilla, the thinnest cortical bone thickness was lbund to be at 4 mm level from the alveolar crest, while the thickest was at 10 mm level （except for the site mesial to the first premolar）. The buccal cortical bone thickness at the sites mesial or distal to the first molar in the mandible and palatal cortical bone thickness of maxilla tended to increase with increasing distance from the alveolar bone.

Composites containing nanoparticles of amorphous calcium phosphate （NACP） remineralize tooth lesions and inhibit caries. A recent study synthesized quaternary ammonium methacrylates （QAMs） with chain lengths （CLs） of 3-18 and determined their effects on a bonding agent. This study aimed to incorporate these QAMs into NACP nanocomposites for the first time to simultaneously endow the material with antibacterial and remineralizing capabilities and to investigate the effects of the CL on the mechanical and biofilm properties. Five QAMs were synthesized： DMAPM （CL3）, DMAHM （CL6）, DMADDM （CL12）, DMAHDM （CL16）, and DMAODM （CL18）. Each QAM was incorporated into a composite containing 20% NACP and 50% glass fillers. A dental plaque microcosm biofilm model was used to evaluate the antibacterial activity. The flexural strength and elastic modulus of nanocomposites with QAMs matched those of a commercial control composite （n = 6; P 〉 0.1）. Increasing the CL from 3 to 16 greatly enhanced the antibacterial activity of the NACP nanocomposite （P 〈 0.05）; further increasing the CL to 18 decreased the antibacterial potency. The NACP nanocomposite with a CL of 16 exhibited biofilm metabolic activity and acid production that were 10-fold lesser than those of the control composite. The NACP nanocomposite with a CL of 16 produced 2-log decreases in the colony-forming units （CFU） of total microorganisms, total streptococci, and mutans streptococci. In conclusion, QAMs with CLs of 3-18 were synthesized and incorporated into an NACP nanocomposite for the first time to simultaneously endow the material with antibacterial and remineralization capabilities. Increasing the C/reduced the metabolic activity and acid production of biofilms and caused a 2-log decrease in CFU without compromising the mechanical properties. Nanocomposites exhibiting strong anti-biofilm activity, remineralization effects, and mechanical properties are promising materials for tooth restorations that inhibit caries.

TNF-<i>α</i>and RANKL facilitates the development of orthodontically-induced inflammatory root resorption

Background: The objective of this study was to determine the levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and receptor activator of NF-kB ligand (RANKL) in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in patients with severe root resorption after orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: Ten patients who had been receiving orthodontic treatment (5-control subjects and 5-severe root resorption subjects) participated in this study. GCF was collected from all patients. Subjects with severe root resorption (>1/3 of the original root length) were identified. Control group subjects with no loss of the root structure undergoing orthodontic treatment were also identified. The GCF was collected non-invasively from the mesial and distal sides of each of the upper central and lateral incisors using filter paper strips. The eluted GCF was used for a Western blot analysis with Antibodies against TNF-α and soluble RANKL (sRANKL). Ten male 6-week-old Wistar rats were subjected to orthodontic force of 50 g to induce a mesially tipping movement of the upper first molars for 7 days. The expression levels of TNF-α and RANKL proteins were determined in periodontal ligament (PDL) by immunohistochemical analysis. Results: The Western blot analysis showed that the TNF-α and sRANKL expressions were significantly higher in the severe root resorption group than in the control group. In the experimental tooth movement in vivo, resorption lacunae with multinucleated cells were observed in 50 g group. The immunoreactivity for TNF-α and RANKL was detected in PDL tissue subjected to the orthodontic force on day 7. Conclusion: These results suggest that TNF-α and RANKL play important roles in inducing or facilitating the development of orthodontically-induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR).

Background： Chronic intermittent hypoxia is the most remarkable feature of obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome and it can induce the change of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α （H IF-1α） expression and contractile properties in the genioglossus. To clarify the role of HIF-lot in contractile properties of the genioglossus, this study generated and compared high-throughput RNA-sequencing data from genioglossus between HIF-1α conditional knockout （KO） mice and littermate wild-type （WT） mice. Methods： KO mice were generated with cre-loxP strategy. Gene expression profile analysis was performed using gene enrichment analysis. Gene ontology （GO） and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes （KEGG） pathway analyses of differently expressed messenger RNAs were performed to identify the related pathways and biological lhnctions. Six differentially expressed genes （DEGs） were validated by qualitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Results： A total of 142 （77 upregulated and 65 downregulated） transcripts were found to exhibit statistically significant difference between the HIF-la-KO and WT mice. GO and KEGG analyses indicated that DEGs included genes involved in ＂skeletal muscle cell differentiation,＂＂muscle organ development,＂＂glucose metabolic process,＂＂glycogen biosynthetic and metabolic process,＂ etc. Conclusion： This study might provide evidence that H IF-lot affects the expression of multiple genes involved in the myogenesis, muscle developrnent, and carbohydrate metabolism through transcriptome analysis in conditional HIE-1α-KO mice.

This study aims to evaluate,the long-term stability of vertical control in hyperdivergent patients treated with temporary anchorage *** sample included 20 hyperdivergent patients without anterior open *** temporary anchorage devices were used to intrude the upper incisor and molars for vertical *** cephalograms were established prior to treatment,immediately after treatment,and during retention. The upper molars and incisors were intruded by 1.33 mm and 1.41 mm after treatment (P0.05).U1-PP was found to possess a significant extrusion of 1.2 mm during the first stage (P0.05). The mandibular plane angle (MP-SN)decreased by 2.58 degrees following treatment, and underwent a relapse of 0.51 degree and 0.42 degree during the first and second stages of retention respectively (P>0.05).No significant soft tissue changes occurred,with the exception of increased upper lip length during the second stage (P<0.05).Maxillary anterior and posterior intrusions,counter clockwise rotation,of the mandibular plane,and improved profiles can be successfully achieved following treatment with vertical control. During the first stage of retention (less than three years),intruded molars and incisors both exhibited some extrusion,and molars had better long-term stability than incisors. During the second stage of retention (three to six years),the therapeutic effects appeared stable,with the exception of some increase in upper lip *** mandibular plane remained stable during the entire retention period.

Objective To investigate the histological changes of rapid tooth movement in dogs treated by resistance reduction and distraction osteogenesis,aiming to establish an animal model and further to reveal the remodeling mechanism of rapid tooth movement. Methods A total of 8 local hybrid dogs were selected as subjects for this study. The second pre-molar was extracted on both sides. The experimental side underwent alvelor surgery for resistance reduction and a home-made tooth-borne intraoral distraction device was installed for rapid tooth movement,while for the other side (control side) only tooth-borne intraoral distraction device was used for rapid tooth movement. The longest active force-delivery span was 2 weeks,followed by 6-week retention. The distance between the moved tooth and anchor unit was recorded weekly,and radiography was performed for each side before and after distraction. The surrounding tissues including periodontal ligament and alveolar bone were sectioned for histological analysis. Results The average distance of tooth movement was 3.55mm on the experimental side and 1.11mm on the control side. The rate of tooth movement was notably higher (P<0.01) and no significant apical root resorption was detected by X-ray on the experimental side. The active alvelor bone remodeling was found on the tension and pressure sides. However,there was no significant difference between the experimental side and the control side after the retention period. Conclusion The rate of orthodontic tooth movement can be accelerated through resistance reduction and periodontal distraction without any unfavorable effects but at minimal anchorage loss.

Preventing enamel demineralization and remineralization of orthodontic patients is important and it di-ffers from other dental patients. Oral hygiene education and oral examination is essential to prevent enamel demi-neralization, and dietary education or control of sugar intake should not be ignored during fixed orthodontic treat-ment. Laser irradiation is a noteworthy method to prevent enamel mineralization. Products containing fluoride andfluoride released not only can be used to prevent demineralization but also have the ability of remineralization during orthodontic treatment. Oral hygiene products containing casein-phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate(CPP-ACP) have been demonstrated to have the ability of remineralization such as sugar-free chewing gum added CPP-ACP, lozenges containing CPP-ACP and milk protein casein stabilized by phosphopeptides.
