Stability of bedded rock slopes subjected to hydro-fluctuation and associated strength deterioration

Reservoir-induced earthquakes(RIEs)occur frequently in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area(TGRA)and the rock mass strength of the hydro-fluctuation belt(HFB)deteriorates severely due to the reservoirinduced seismic *** models of typical bedded rock slopes(BRSs),***(GIS),moderately(mis),and steeply(SIS)inclined slopes,were proposed according to field *** dynamic response mechanism and stability of the BRSs,affected by the rock mass deterioration of the HFB,were investigated by the shaking table test and the universal distinct element code(UDEC)***,the amplification coefficient of the peak ground acceleration(PGA)of the slope was gradually attenuated under multiple seismic loads,and the acceleration response showed obvious“surface effect”and“elevation effect”in the horizontal and vertical directions,***“S-type”cubic function and“steep-rise type”exponential function were used to characterize the cumulative damage evolution of the slope caused by microseismic waves(low seismic waves)and high seismic waves,*** to the dynamic responses of the acceleration,cumulative displacement,rock pressure,pore water pressure,damping ratio,natural frequency,stability coefficient,and sliding velocity of the slope,the typical evolution processes of the dynamic cumulative damage and instability failure of the slope were generalized,and the numerical and experimental results were *** the dynamic effects of the slope height(SH),slope angle(SA),bedding plane thickness(BPT),dip angle of the bedding plane(DABP),dynamic load amplitude(DLA),dynamic load frequency(DLF),height of water level of the hydro-fluctuation belt(HWLHFB),degradation range of the hydro-fluctuation belt(DRHFB),and degradation shape of the hydro-fluctuation belt(DSHFB),the sensitivity of factors influencing the slope dynamic stability using the orthogonal analysis method(OAM)was DLA>DRHFB>SA>SH>DLF>HWLHFB>DSHFB>DABP>BPT.

A Simulation-Extrapolation Approach to the Analysis of Interval-Censored Failure Time Data with mis-Measured Covariates

Interval-censored failure time data arise frequently in periodical follow-up studies including clinical trials and epidemiological surveys. In addition, some covariates may be subject to measurement errors due to the instrumental contamination, biological variation or other reasons. For the analysis of interval-censored data with mis-measured covariates, the existing methods either assume a parametric model or rely on the availability of replicated surrogate measurements for the error-prone covariate, which both have obvious limitations. To overcome these shortcomings, the authors propose a simulation-extrapolation estimation procedure under a general class of transformation models. The resulting estimators are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal. The numerical results obtained from a simulation study indicate that the proposed method performs reasonably well in *** particular, the proposed method can reduce the estimation bias given by the naive method that does not take measurement errors into account. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a real data set on hypobaric decompression sickness.

Efficient unequal error protection for online fountain codes

In this paper,an efficient unequal error protection(UEP)scheme for online fountain codes is *** the buildup phase,the traversing-selection strategy is proposed to select the most important symbols(mis).Then,in the completion phase,the weighted-selection strategy is applied to provide low *** performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed and compared with the existing UEP online fountain *** results show that in terms of mis and the least important symbols(LIS),when the bit error ratio is 10-4,the proposed scheme can achieve 85%and 31.58%overhead reduction,respectively.

A branching heuristic for SAT solvers based on complete implication graphs

The performance of modern conflict-driven clause learning(CDCL) SAT solvers strongly depends on branching heuristics. State-of-the-art branching heuristics, such as variable state independent decaying sum(VSIDS) and learning rate branching(LRB), are computed and maintained by aggregating the occurrences of the variables in conflicts. However, these heuristics are not sufficiently accurate at the beginning of the search because they are based on very few conflicts. We propose the distance branching heuristic, which,given a conflict, constructs a complete implication graph and increments the score of a variable considering the longest distance between the variable and the conflict rather than the simple presence of the variable in the graph. We implemented the proposed distance branching heuristic in Maple LCM and Glucose-3.0, two of the best CDCL SAT solvers, and used the resulting solvers to solve instances from the application and crafted tracks of the 2014 and 2016 SAT competitions and the main track of the 2017 SAT competition. The empirical results demonstrate that using the proposed distance branching heuristic in the initialization phase of Maple LCM and Glucose-3.0 solvers improves performance. The Maple LCM solver with the proposed distance branching heuristic in the initialization phase won the main track of the 2017 SAT competition.

The biochemical efficacy of primary cryoablation combined with prolonged total androgen suppression compared with radiotherapy on high-risk prostate cancer： a 3-year pilot study

To gain beneficial effects in the management of high-risk prostate cancer, an integrated approach that combines local therapy and androgen deprivation therapy （ADT） was used. We compared biochemical responses between primary cryosurgical ablation of the prostate （CSAP） combined with prolonged ADT and radiation combined with ADT, which is the established modality in high-risk disease. A total of 33 high-risk patients received CSAP combined with ADT for 3 months before and up to 24 months after treatment. This patient group was matched with another 33 patients who had undergone three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy （3D-CRT） with the same protocol for ADT. Biochemical recurrence （BCR） was assessed by the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology （ASTRO） definition, the Phoenix definition and a prostate-specific antigen （PSA） cutoff of 0.5 ng mL^-1. Median follow-up was 61.0 ± 11.9 months for the CSAP ＋ ADT group and 86.0±15.8 months for the 3D-CRT ＋ ADT group. In the CSAP group, major complications including rectourethral fistula and incontinence were not noted. In the CSAP ＋ ADT group, 57.0% had BCR using the ASTRO definition, 21.2% using the Phoenix definition and 54.5% using a PSA cutoff of 0.5 ng mL^-1. In the 3D-CRT ＋ ADT group, 54.5%, 21.2% and 54.5% had BCR using the ASTRO, Phoenix and PSA definition, respectively. In the CSAP ＋ ADT group, the BCR-free survival （BRFS） was 54 ± 10 months using the ASTRO definition, 65 ± 5 months using the Phoenix definition and 51 ± 4 months using a PSA cutoff of 0.5 ng mL-1. In the 3D-CRT ＋ ADT group, the BRFS was 68 ± 12, 93 ± 19 and 70 ± 18 months using the ASTRO, Phoenix and PSA definition, respectively. By the log-rank test, the BRFS values for each group were not statistically different. This intermediate-term result indicated that primary CSAP combined with prolonged ADT offers a parallel biochemical response compared with radiotherapy in high-risk prostate cancer.

Enhancement of endogenous midbrain neurogenesis by microneurotrophin BNN-20 after neural progenitor grafting in a mouse model of nigral degeneration

We have previously shown the neuroprotective and pro-neurogenic activity of microneurotrophin BNN-20 in the substantia nigra of the “weaver” mouse, a model of progressive nigrostriatal degeneration. Here, we extended our investigation in two clinically-relevant ways. First, we assessed the effects of BNN-20 on human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neural progenitor cells and neurons derived from healthy and parkinsonian donors. Second, we assessed if BNN-20 can boost the outcome of mouse neural progenitor cell intranigral transplantations in weaver mice, at late stages of degeneration. We found that BNN-20 has limited direct effects on cultured human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neural progenitor cells, marginally enhancing their differentiation towards neurons and partially reversing the pathological phenotype of dopaminergic neurons generated from parkinsonian donors. In agreement, we found no effects of BNN-20 on the mouse neural progenitor cells grafted in the substantia nigra of weaver mice. However, the graft strongly induced an endogenous neurogenic response throughout the midbrain, which was significantly enhanced by the administration of microneurotrophin BNN-20. Our results provide straightforward evidence of the existence of an endogenous midbrain neurogenic system that can be specifically strengthened by BNN-20. Interestingly, the lack of major similar activity on cultured human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neural progenitors and their progeny reveals the in vivo specificity of the aforementioned pro-neurogenic effect.

Extending TAM for Online Learning Systems: An Intrinsic Motivation Perspective

To get a better understanding of user behavior towards online learning systems, the technology acceptance model （TAM） was extended to include an intrinsic motivational factor. An online survey posted on a campus BBS was conducted to collect research data with a total of 121 usable responses. The results support the motivational model and show that the explained variance of online learning system use behavior is 71.3% higher than that of the original TAM explanation.

Unknown Inputs Observer for a Class of Nonlinear Uncertain Systems: An LMI Approach

This paper deals with the simultaneous estimation of states and unknown inputs for a class of Lipschitz nonlinear systems using only the measured outputs. The system is assumed to have bounded uncertainties that appear on both the state and output matrices. The observer design problem is formulated as a set of linear constraints which can be easily solved using linear matrix inequalities (LMI) technique. An application based on manipulator arm actuated by a direct current (DC) motor is presented to evaluate the performance of the proposed observer. The observer is applied to estimate both state and faults.
