Shallow sub-lakes are essential for sustaining the successful wintering of waterbirds in Poyang Lake,China

For migratory waterbirds,the quality of wintering habitat is related to spring migration and successful breeding in the next *** availability of food resources in the habitat is critical and varies within water *** the water-level fluctuations in Poyang Lake have been extremely variable interannually in recent years,the wintering waterbird populations have remained relatively ***,the mechanism of maintaining the stability is worth *** study aimed to compare the distribution of vegetation and herbivorous wa-terbirds in 2015-2016 and 2016-2017,focusing on three shallow sub-lakes and one main lake *** results showed that the emergence of tubers and the growth of Carex *** a continuous food supply and habitat for wintering waterbirds with a gradual decline in the water *** sub-lakes supported almost all of the tuber-eating waterbirds(1.42-1.62×10^(5))and most geese(1.34-1.53×10^(6)).However,the main lake area,covered with Persicaria hydropiper,did not provide adequate and accessible *** resulted in almost no distribution of tuber-eating waterbirds,with only a few geese congregating in early *** results demonstrated that the shallow sub-lakes under human control provided a different environment from the main lake and are key to sustaining the successful wintering of hundreds of thousands of migratory waterbirds in Poyang ***,we recommend refining the anthropogenic management of the shallow sub-lakes to regulate the water level to ensure the carrying capacity of Poyang Lake.

Antibacterial and cytotoxic metabolites produced by Streptomyces tanashiensis BYF-112 isolated from Odontotermes formosanus

Chemical investigations of the termite-associated Streptomyces tanashiensis BYF-112 resulted in the discovery of four novel alkaloid derivatives: vegfrecines A and B(1 and 2), exfoliazone A(3), and venezueline H(7), in addition to nine known metabolites(4-6, 8-13). The structures of these compounds were elucidated through comprehensive spectroscopic analysis and comparison with existing literature data. Antibacterial assays revealed that viridomycin A(11) exhibited potent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, with a zone of inhibition(ZOI) of 12.67 mm, in comparison to a ZOI of 17.67 mm for the positive control gentamicin sulfate. Viridomycin A(11) showed moderate activity against Micrococcus tetragenus and Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidae, with ZOI values of 15.50 and 14.33 mm, respectively, which were inferior to those of gentamicin sulfate(34.67 and 24.00mm). Viridomycin F(12) also exhibited moderate antibacterial effects against S. aureus, M. tetragenus, and P. syringae pv. actinidae,with ZOI values of 8.33, 16.50, and 10.83 mm, respectively. Cytotoxicity assays demonstrated that viridobruunine A(5), exfoliazone(6), viridomycin A(11), and X-14881E(13) exhibited significant cytotoxicity against human malignant melanoma(A375), ovarian cancer(SKOV-3), and gastric cancer(MGC-803) cell lines, with IC_(50) values ranging from 4.61 to 19.28 μmol·L^(-1). Furthermore, bioinformatic analysis of the complete genome of S. tanashiensis suggested a putative biosynthetic gene cluster(BGC) responsible for the production of compounds 1-12. These findings indicate that the secondary metabolites of insect-associated S. tanashiensis BYF-112hold promise as potential sources of novel antibacterial and anticancer agents.

Since the time of Darwin,subspecies have been recognized as an initial stage in the evolution of ***,the impact of dispersal on subspecies richness in birds globally has received little attention,despite dispersal being a key factor in determining the rate of evolution and playing a significant role in evolutionary ***,it is important to conduct a comprehensive study to address this *** this study,we aimed to assess the association between subspecies richness(measured by the number of subspecies)and dispersal ability(measured by the hand-wing index)on a global scale,using a dataset of over 7000 bird *** results revealed a negative correlation between dispersal ability and the number of subspecies,without any quadratic *** wing is a crucial phenotypic trait for birds,and the concept of subspecies is important in speciation theory and conservation ***,our findings not only enhance our understanding of the association between avian morphological traits and evolutionary divergence but also have implications for the conservation of avian species diversity.

Enhancing growth, liver health, and bile acid metabolism of tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus) through combined cholesterol and bile acid supplementation in plant-based diets

The present study aimed to compare the nutritional effects of cholesterol, bile acids, and combination of cholesterol with bile acids in plant-based diets on juvenile genetically improved farmed tilapia(GIFT;Oreochromis niloticus). The isonitrogenous(321 g/kg crude protein) and isolipidic(76 g/kg crude fat) diets(Con diet) were based on plant protein sources, which included corn gluten meal, soybean meal, cottonseed meal and rapeseed meal. The Con diet was supplemented with 12 g/kg cholesterol(CHO diet), 0.2 g/kg bile acids(BAs diet), a combination of 12 g/kg cholesterol and 0.2 g/kg bile acids(CHO-BAs diet),respectively. Each diet was fed to three tanks in an indoor recirculating aquaculture system for 9 *** showed that compared to the Con group, fish had a higher weight gain rate, hepatosomatic index,and a lower feed conversion ratio in the CHO-BAs group. The highest levels of whole-fish fat and ash were found in the Con group. Serum parameters, including activities of alanine aminotransferase(ALT) and aspartate transaminase(AST), along with levels of glucose(GLU) and triglyceride(TG) except for total cholesterol(TCHO), were lower in the CHO, BAs, and CHO-BAs groups than those in the Con group(P liferation. Gene expression analysis indicated that the transcriptional levels of bile acid metabolism-related genes(including fxr, fgf19, bsep) were up-regulated in the CHO-BAs group(P < 0.05), whereas cholesterol metabolism-related genes(acly and hmgcr) were downregulated in both CHO and CHO-BAs groups(P < 0.001). Moreover, UPLC-MS/MS analysis revealed that the higher taurine-conjugated bile acids(T-BAs), followed by free bile acids(Free-BAs) and glycine(G-BAs)were determined in tilapia bile. Single-cell network analysis reveals gene expression programs for Arabidopsis root development and metabolism

Single-cell RNA-sequencing datasets of Arabidopsis roots have been generated,but related comprehensive gene co-expression network analyses are *** conducted a single-cell gene co-expression network analysis with publicly available scRNA-seq datasets of Arabidopsis roots using a SingleCellGGM *** analysis identified 149 gene co-expression modules,which we considered to be gene expression programs(GEPs).By examining their spatiotemporal expression,we identified GEPs specifically expressed in major root cell types along their developmental *** GEPs define gene programs regulating root cell development at different stages and are enriched with relevant developmental *** examples,a GEP specific for the quiescent center(QC)contains 20 genes regulating QC and stem cell niche homeostasis,and four GEPs are expressed in sieve elements(SEs)from early to late developmental stages,with the early-stage GEP containing 17 known SE developmental *** also identified GEPs for metabolic pathways with cell-type-specific expression,suggesting the existence of cell-type-specific metabolism in *** the GEPs,we discovered and verified a columellaspecific gene,NRL27,as a regulator of the auxin-related root gravitropism *** analysis thus systematically reveals GEPs that regulate Arabidopsis root development and metabolism and provides ample resources for root biology studies.

Replacement of fish meal with cottonseed protein concentrate in Chinese mitten crab(Eriocheir sinensis): Nutrient digestibility, growth performance, free amino acid profile, and expression of genes related to nutrient metabolism

This study aimed to investigate the application of cottonseed protein concentrate(CPC) in Chinese mitten crabs(Eriocheir sinensis). First, the apparent digestibility coefficient(ADC) of CPC, fish meal and soybean meal were compared in crabs(21.72 ± 0.33 g). The protein ADC of CPC was 90.42%, which was significantly higher than that of soybean meal(83.16%)(P < 0.05). The ADC of Phe, Cys and Glu of CPC were significantly higher than those of fish meal, while the ADC of Ile, Leu, Lys, Met, Thr and Ala of CPC were significantly lower(P < 0.05). Second, we investigated the effects of fish meal substitution by CPC on growth performance, free amino acid profile, and expression of genes related to nutrient metabolism in crabs. Six diets were formulated by replacing 0%, 15%, 30%, 45%, 60% and 75% fish meal with CPC, namely FM, CPC15, CPC30, CPC45, CPC60, and CPC75. A total of 630 crabs(1.68 ± 0.00 g) were randomly divided into 18 tanks(3 tanks per group) and fed 3 times daily for 9 weeks. Results showed that CPC75 group significantly reduced growth performance, feed conversion efficiency, and free Ile, Leu, Lys, Met, and Thr contents in muscle(P < 0.05). The contents of free amino acids(Arg, His, Ile, Leu, Lys, Met, Phe, Thr, Val,Ala, Cys, Glu, Gly, Ser and Tyr) in hepatopancreas decreased linearly with the increase of dietary CPC level(P < 0.05). The substitution of more than 45% fish meal with CPC significantly decreased the concentration of delicious amino acids(Ala, Glu and Gly) in hepatopancreas(P < 0.05), which might adversely affect crab flavor. The expression of genes related to antioxidant capacity, protein transport, TOR pathway and lipid metabolism was significantly downregulated by increasing dietary CPC level(P < 0.05). In conclusion, based on the quadratic regression analysis of FCR and PER, the optimal replacement levels of fish meal with CPC in crab diet containing 35% fish meal were 32.36% and 35.38%, respectively. Classifying Chinese Medicine Constitution Using Multimodal Deep-Learning Model

Synergistic Coupling of Sulfide Electrolyte and Integrated 3D FeS2 Electrode Toward Long-Cycling All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

FeS2cathode is promising for all-solid-state lithium batteries due to its ultra-high capacity, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, the poor performances, induced by limited electrode-electrolyte interface, severe volume expansion, and polysulfide shuttle, hinder the application of FeS2in all-solidstate lithium batteries. Herein, an integrated 3D FeS2electrode with full infiltration of Li6PS5Cl sulfide electrolytes is designed to address these *** a 3D integrated design not only achieves intimate and maximized interfacial contact between electrode and sulfide electrolytes, but also effectively buffers the inner volume change of FeS2and completely eliminates the polysulfide shuttle through direct solid–solid conversion of Li2S/S. Besides, the vertical 3D arrays guarantee direct electron transport channels and horizontally shortened ion diffusion paths, endowing the integrated electrode with a remarkably reduced interfacial impedance and enhanced reaction *** from these synergies, the integrated all-solid-state lithium battery exhibits the largest reversible capacity (667mAh g-1), best rate performance,and highest capacity retention of 82%over 500 cycles at 0.1 C compared to both a liquid battery and non-integrated all-solid-state lithium battery. The cycling performance is among the best reported for FeS2-based all-solid-state lithium batteries. This work presents an innovative synergistic strategy for designing long-cycling high-energy all-solid-state lithium batteries, which can be readily applied to other battery systems, such as lithium-sulfur batteries.

Metabolomic-based analysis reveals bile acid-mediated ovarian failure induced by low temperature in zebrafish

As ectotherms, fish are highly sensitive to temperature fluctuations, which can profoundly impact their reproductive cycles. In this study, we investigated the fertility and histological characteristics of zebrafish(Danio rerio) ovaries exposed to a temperature gradient ranging from the thermopreferendum temperature of the species,27℃, to lower temperatures of 22℃, 20℃, and 13℃ over a period of two weeks. Comparative metabolomic(six biological replicates for each temperature) and transcriptomic(four biological replicates for each temperature) analyses were conducted under the four temperature conditions. Results indicated that lower temperatures inhibited oocyte development and differential metabolites were involved in steroid hormone production,antioxidant function, and lipid and protein *** reproductive hormones, increased proteolysis,and lipid degradation significantly impeded oocyte development and egg maturation. Notably, a significant increase in bile acid content was noted in the ovaries of the cold-treated fish, indicating that bile acids play a critical role in ovarian failure. Overall, these findings provide valuable insights into the mechanisms governing the reproductive response of fish to cold stress.

Advances in Understanding Cadmium Stress and Breeding of Cadmium-Tolerant Crops

Cadmium(Cd) pollution has emerged as a critical global environmental concern, due to its significant toxicity, environmental persistence, and the pervasiveness of contamination. Significantly, the bioaccumulation of Cd in agricultural crops constitutes a primary vector for its entry into the human diet. This issue warrants urgent attention from both the scientific community and policymakers to develop and implement effective mitigation strategies. This review delves into the physiological impacts of Cd stress on plants, including the suppression of photosynthetic activity, amplification of oxidative stress, and disruptions in mineral nutrient homeostasis. Additionally, the resistance mechanisms deployed by plants in response to Cd stress have been explored, and the prospective contributions of molecular breeding strategies in augmenting crop tolerance to Cd and minimizing its bioaccumulation have been assessed. By integrating and analyzing these findings, we seek to inform future research trajectories and proffer strategic approaches to enhance agricultural sustainability, safeguard human health, and protect environmental integrity.
