River confluences(RCs) are important features within river systems where the three dimensional(3 D)flow structures and the downstream mixing of flows can cause deep scour holes. Despite this, few methods have been proposed to control scouring at RCs. In this study, application of a collar was experimentally examined for local scour control at the point where two rivers flow together. In particular, experimental tests were done with and without collar application at three different locations. The results reveal that the scour depth is directly proportional to the discharge ratio, i.e. the ratio of lateral discharge to that in the channel downstream of the confluence, and the densimetric Froude number(Frg).In addition, installation of a collar at RCs can decrease the scour depth up to 100%, thus completely avoiding the scour process. The results also show that by increasing the Frg the optimal installation location for a collar changes and moves towards the river bed level. Using a collar can also reduce the height of the point bar formed downstream of the confluence. The outcomes of the study allow derivation of an equation for predicting scour depth when a collar is applied as a countermeasure. The analysis of this equation shows that the estimates are mostly affected by the Frg.

Machine Learning-Based Predictions on the Self-Heating Characteristics of Nanocomposites with Hybrid Fillers

A machine learning-based prediction of the self-heating characteristics and the negative temperature coefficient(NTC)effect detection of nanocomposites incorporating carbon nanotube(CNT)and carbon fiber(CF)is *** CNT content was fixed at 4.0 wt.%,and CFs having three different lengths(0.1,3 and 6 mm)at dosage of 1.0 wt.%were added to fabricate the *** self-heating properties of the specimens were evaluated via self-heating *** on the experiment results,two types of artificial neural network(ANN)models were constructed to predict the surface temperature and electrical resistance,and to detect a severe NTC *** present predictions were compared with experimental values to verify the applicability of the proposed ANN *** ANN model for data prediction was able to predict the surface temperature and electrical resistance closely,with corresponding R-squared value of 0.91 and 0.97,*** ANN model for data detection could detect the severe NTC effect occurred in the nanocomposites under the self-heating condition,as evidenced by the accuracy and sensitivity values exceeding 0.7 in all criteria.

A low-Earth-orbit(LEO)satellite network can provide full-coverage access services worldwide and is an essential candidate for future 6G ***,the large variability of the geographic distribution of the Earth’s population leads to an uneven service volume distribution of access ***,the limitations on the resources of satellites are far from being able to serve the traffic in hotspot *** enhance the forwarding capability of satellite networks,we first assess how hotspot areas under different load cases and spatial scales significantly affect the network throughput of an LEO satellite network ***,we propose a multi-region cooperative traffic scheduling *** algorithm migrates low-grade traffic from hotspot areas to coldspot areas for forwarding,significantly increasing the overall throughput of the satellite network while sacrificing some latency of end-to-end *** algorithm can utilize all the global satellite resources and improve the utilization of network *** model the cooperative multi-region scheduling of large-scale LEO *** on the model,we build a system testbed using OMNET++to compare the proposed method with existing *** simulations show that our proposed method can reduce the packet loss probability by 30%and improve the resource utilization ratio by 3.69%.

Minin-induced water inrush from a confined aquifer due to subsided floor karst collapse column(SKCC)is a type of serious disaster in the underground coal *** collapse column(KCC)developed in a confined aquifer occurs widely throughout northern China.A water inrush disaster from SKCC occurred in Taoyuan coal mine on February 3,*** order to analyze the effect of the KCC influence zone’s(KCCIZ)width and the entry driving distance of the water inrush through the fractured channels of the SKCC,the stress,seepage,and impact dynamics coupling equations were used tomodel the seepage rule,and a numerical FLAC3D model was created to determine the plastic zones,the vertical displacement development of the rockmass surrounding the entry driving working face(EDWF),and the seepage vector and water inflow development of the seepage *** hysteretic mechanism of water inrush due to SKCC in Taoyuan coal mine was *** results indicate that a water inrush disaster will occur when the width of the KCCIZ exceeds 16 m under a driving,which leads to the aquifer connecting with the fractured zones of the entry *** water inrush disasters are related to the stress release rate of the surrounding rocks under the entry *** the entry driving exceeds about 10 m from the water inrush point,the stress release rate reaches about 100%,and a water inrush disaster occurs.

After the success of the Daya Bay experiment, the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory （JUNO） was launched to measure neutrino-mass hierarchy and oscillation parameters and to study other neutrino physics. Its central detector is set for antineutrinos from reactors, the Earth, the atmosphere, and the Sun. The main requirements of the central detector are con- tainment of 20 kt of liquid scintillator, as the target mass, and 3% energy resolution. It is about a ball-shape detector of 38.5 m with -75% coverage of PMT on its inner surface. The design of such a huge detector is a big challenge because it must meet the requirements for several different types of physics measurement and possess the feasibility and reliability in its structure and engineering, all at reasonable time and cost. One option for the JUNO central detector is a hyper-scale acrylic ball sub- merged in the water to shield the background. This paper proposes a structural scheme for such an acrylic ball that is supported by a stainless-steel truss, inspired by point-supported glass-curtain walls in civil engineering. The preliminary design of the scheme is completed and verified by finite element （FE） method using ABAQUS. FE analysis shows that the scheme can con- trol the stress level of the acrylic ball within the limit of 5 to 10 MPa, in accordance with the demand of the design objective of the central detector. The scheme is of outstanding global stability and allows various chocces on local connections. We prove that the scheme is of good feasibility and should be a reasonable option for the central detector.

Influence of non-dimensional strength parameters on the seismic stability of cracked slopes

Cracks in rock or soil slopes influence the stability and durability of the slopes. Seismic forces can trigger slope disasters, particularly in the cracked slopes. Considering the nonlinear characteristics of materials, the more generalized nonlinear failure criterion proposed by Baker is adopted. The influence of non-dimensional strength parameters on the stability of cracked slopes under earthquakes is performed using the upper bound limit analysis. The seismic displacement is calculated by adopting the logarithmic spiral failure surface according to the sliding rigid block model. Based on the existing studies, two methods for the stability analysis of cracked slopes under earthquakes are introduced: the pseudo-static method(with the factor of safety(Fs) as an evaluation index), and the displacement-based method(with the seismic displacement as an evaluation index). The pseudo-static method can only determine the instantaneous stability state of the cracked slope, yet the displacement-based methodreflects the stability variation of cracked slopes during earthquakes. The results indicate that the nondimensional strength parameters affect the factor of safety and seismic displacement of slopes significantly. The non-dimensional strength parameter(n) controlling the curvature of strength function shapes on the slope stability is affected by other parameters. Owing to cracks, the effect of non-dimensional strength parameters on seismic displacement becomes more significant.
