Efficient electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia at low concentration by copper-cobalt oxide nanowires with shell-core structure

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia(NO3−RR)for removing nitrate from wastewater is a promising but challengeable technology that is increasingly ***,we developed an efficient CuO_(x)and CoCuO_(x)composed hybrid catalyst(CoCuO_(x)@CuO_(x)/copper foam(CF)),characteristic of distinctive shell-core nanowires grown on CF substrate with CuO_(x)core and CoCuO_(x)*** built-in electric field formed at the interface of the CoO/Cu_(2)O heterostructure promotes NO3−adsorption by modulating the charge distribution at the interface,which greatly improves the ammonia yield rate and Faradaic ***−0.2 V *** hydrogen electrode(RHE),CoCuO_(x)@CuO_(x)/CF achieves not only an excellent ammonia yield rate of up to 519.1μg·h^(−1)·cm^(−2)and Faradaic efficiency of 99.83%at 1 mM NO3−concentration,but also excellent mechanical *** study provides a novel pathway to design electrocatalyst for the removal of nitrate from dilute nitric acid solutions(≤2 mM).

Nanocarbon-based conductive membranes, especially carbon nanotube (CNT)-based membranes, have tremendous potential for wastewater treatment and water purification because of their excellent water permeability and selectivity, as well as their electrochemically enhanced performance (e.g., improved antifouling ability). However, it remains challenging to prepare CNT membranes with high structural stability and high electrical conductivity. In this study, a highly electroconductive and structurally stable polyphenylene/CNT (PP/CNT) composite membrane was prepared by electropolymerizing biphenyl on a CNT hollow fiber membrane. The PP/CNT membrane showed 3.4 and 5.0 times higher electrical conductivity than pure CNT and poly(vinyl alcohol)/CNT (PVA/CNT) membranes, respectively. The structural stability of the membrane was superior to that of the pure CNT membrane and comparable to that of the PVA/CNT membrane. The membrane fouling was significantly alleviated under an electrical assistance of −2.0 V, with a flux loss of only 11.7% after 5 h filtration of humic acid, which is significantly lower than those of PP/CNT membranes without electro-assistance (56.8%) and commercial polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes (64.1%). Additionally, the rejection of negatively charged pollutants (humic acid and sodium alginate) was improved by the enhanced electrostatic repulsion. After four consecutive filtration-cleaning cycle tests, the flux recovery rate after backwashing reached 97.2%, which was much higher than those of electricity-free PP/CNT membranes (67.0%) and commercial PVDF membranes (61.1%). This study offers insights into the preparation of stable conductive membranes for membrane fouling control in potential water treatment applications.

Photoinduced generation of alkyl and phthalimide nitrogen radicals from N-hydroxyphthalimide esters for the synthesis of benzophenone-type bioisosteres

N-Hydroxyphthalimide（NHPI） esters have emerged as powerful sources of alkyl radicals generated by single-electron transfer,but homolysis of NHPI ester to produce an alkyl radical and a phthalimide nitrogen radical is still in its infancy. In this study, we developed a light-induced method for generation of alkyl and phthalimide nitrogen radicals from NHPI esters and subsequent reactions of the radicals with [1.1.1]propellane and aryl aldehydes for rapid generation of bicycle [1.1.1]pentane ketones. This method does not require metals or photosensitizers, features a broad substrate scope（90 examples） and excellent functional group tolerance, and can be used for the functionalization of structurally complex natural products and drugs. Mechanistic investigations indicate that the reaction involves photoinduced homolytic cleavage of the Cs2CO3-NHPI ester complex to produce alkyl and phthalimide nitrogen radicals and subsequent hydrogen atom transfer between the phthalimide nitrogen radical and the aldehyde to generate an acyl radical.

To better characterize the properties of surface-initiated polymers, simultaneous bulk-and surface-initiated polymerizations are usually carried out by assuming that the properties of the surface-initiated polymers resemble those of the bulk-initiated polymers. Through a Monte Carlo simulation using a heterogeneous stochastic reaction model, it was discovered that the bulk-initiated polymers exhibit a higher molecular weight and a lower dispersity than the corresponding surface-initiated polymers, which indicates that the equivalent assumption is invalid. Furthermore, the molecular weight distributions of the two types of polymers are also different, suggesting different polymerization mechanisms. The results can be simply explained by the heterogeneous distributions of reactants in the system. This study is helpful to better understand surface-initiated polymerization.

Tunnel boring machines(TBMs)have been widely utilised in tunnel construction due to their high efficiency and *** predicting TBM performance can improve project time management,cost control,and risk *** study aims to use deep learning to develop real-time models for predicting the penetration rate(PR).The models are built using data from the Changsha metro project,and their performances are evaluated using unseen data from the Zhengzhou Metro *** one-step forecast,the predicted penetration rate follows the trend of the measured penetration rate in both training and *** autoregressive integrated moving average(ARIMA)model is compared with the recurrent neural network(RNN)*** results show that univariate models,which only consider historical penetration rate itself,perform better than multivariate models that take into account multiple geological and operational parameters(GEO and OP).Next,an RNN variant combining time series of penetration rate with the last-step geological and operational parameters is developed,and it performs better than other models.A sensitivity analysis shows that the penetration rate is the most important parameter,while other parameters have a smaller impact on time series *** is also found that smoothed data are easier to predict with high ***,over-simplified data can lose real characteristics in time *** conclusion,the RNN variant can accurately predict the next-step penetration rate,and data smoothing is crucial in time series *** study provides practical guidance for TBM performance forecasting in practical engineering.
