Evolution and Determinants of Population Agglomeration in Less Developed Metropolitan Areas:A Case Study of the Taiyuan Metropolitan Area,China

It is of importance to enhance the urban areas'capacity for population aggregation in underdeveloped regions,aiming to rectify the imbalanced and insufficient pattern of economic development in *** the Taiyuan Metropolitan Area(TMA)in central China as a case study,this paper examines the evolutionary process and characteristics of population agglomeration from 2000 to 2020,and identifies factors associated with agglomeration and their spatial *** findings indicated that:1)against the background of sustained population shrinkage in the provincial area,the TMA showed a demographic trend of steady increase,albeit with a decelerated growth *** the metropolitan area,urban population size continued to grow rapidly,whereas the rural areas endured sustained *** in city size continued to widen,and the polarization of concentrated population in the core cities kept increasing.2)Agglomerations in both secondary and service industries had significant positive effects on local population agglomeration,with the former effect being *** economic development,government fiscal expenditure,and financial advancement all contributed to facilitating local population *** a spatial spillover perspective,service agglomeration and financial development promoted population agglomeration in surrounding ***,fiscal expenditure inhibited such *** for industrial agglomeration and regional economic development,their spatial spillover effects were *** results obtained reveal several policy implications aimed at enhancing the population agglomeration capacity of the metropolitan area in underdeveloped regions during the new era.

Spillovers from China's monetary policy have become increasingly obvious with China's growing importance in the global economy and its close economic and trade ties with the *** study establishes a proxy structure vector autoregression model to investigate the magnitude and transmission channel of spillovers from China to global and regional economies,taking advantage of high-frequency changes in asset prices in the financial markets to identify monetary policy *** analysis reveals that China's monetary policy can affect the global economy by influencing international trade and commodity prices but there is no evidence of China's monetary policy affecting global financial *** in China's monetary policy can cause a decline in world output whereas expansion in monetary policy can support global trade and *** study also finds that the response of emerging Asian economies to China's monetary policy shock was nearly twice that of developed economies,while the transmission path did not *** results of this study are consistent with the stylized fact that China's monetary policy plays an important role in the global trade and commodity cycle,although it does not drive the global financial cycle.

We investigate the causal relationship between foreign ownership and international trade performance by comparing foreign-acquired firms with similar domestic-acquired firms in China with regard to changes in their post-acquisition international trade *** findings indicate that foreign ownership significantly enhanced the probability of both exporting and importing,and strongly increased trade *** ownership took effect from the year of the acquisition and persisted for at least 2 *** stimulated both processing trade and ordinary trade,and expanded products and trading ***-acquisition trade performance also exhibited heterogeneity based on the different pre-acquisition and post-acquisition *** for the underlying mechanisms,we show that firms experienced significant output expansion,increased export dependence,and eased financial constraints after foreign acquisition.

This paper considers the supplier investment decision-making problem in a supply chain consisting of an original equipment manufacturer(OEM),a global supplier,and a local *** reduce dependence on global suppliers and improve supply stability,we develop a differential game model to investigate the optimal investment decisions of the OEM towards the local supplier under different risk scenarios and the impact of different risks on the optimal *** results show that investment efficiency and risks have a significant impact on OEM investment ***,when the OEM has higher investment efficiency,investing in the local supplier is profitable for the OEM;conversely,when the investment efficiency of the OEM is lower,it does not *** addition,an increase in the supply risk of the global supplier will lower the entry threshold for OEM investment,but an increase in the supply risk of the local supplier and the reputational risk of both will increase this threshold,meaning that only the OEM with significantly higher investment efficiency can profit.

The energy access challenge remains a significant barrier to sustainable development,with millions of people still needing access to modern energy *** fuels have played a crucial role in meeting electricity demand,but they face challenges and drawbacks in terms of environmental sustainability,energy security,and climate *** study examines how renewable and non-renewable energy generation capacity impacted the environment in 53 upper-middle-income countries from 1990 to 2020,using energy access and alternative energy sources as mediating *** findings of this study provide valuable insights into the complex relationship between renewable energy generation capacity,energy access,alternative energy sources,and environmental conditions in upper-middleincome *** positive relationship between renewable energy generation capacity and environmental conditions emphasizes the importance and potential of renewable energy sources in mitigating environmental ***,the findings indicate that energy access also plays a crucial role in shaping energy generation patterns,with higher levels of access being associated with increased renewable energy generation and decreased reliance on non-renewable energy *** findings highlight the urgent need for policies and measures to promote renewable energy adoption and prioritize energy access to mitigate environmental degradation and achieve sustainable development goals.

The value-added tax(VAT)in China is levied and allocated based on the origin *** the background of the increasing substitution of online retail for traditional offline retail,this mechanism will exacerbate the disparity of regional tax revenue,and intensify tax competition among local ***,reconsidering the allocation mechanism of value-added tax in China can be an important policy decision,and it is influenced by various economic and social ***,we utilize large-scale retail transaction data from an e-commerce platform to measure regional disparities in retail and consumption among different regions and then reveals present tax policy results in revenue imbalance in different ***,we establish a model based on game theory to illustrate how the origin principle leads to fierce tax competition among ***,by establishing and solving tax allocation models between local governments and the central government,this study simulates and calculates the degree of revenue imbalance under different scenarios and attempts to propose policy *** results indicate that implementing the destination principle will reduce regional tax ***,adjusting the allocation ratio between the central government and local governments based on city levels is advantageous for further reducing regional tax revenue disparities.

This study assesses the effect of human capital expansion on China's export product *** employs the difference-in-differences(DID)framework based on a quasi-natural experiment investigating the 1999 higher education enrollment expansion as the exogenous policy *** empirical results confirm that human capital expansion appreciably improved the quality of China's export *** capital expansion promoted the transformation and upgrading of old products and the development of new products in term of intensive margin;it strengthened the endowment advantages of incumbent high-quality export enterprises while preventing low-quality enterprises from entering the market through price competition on the extensive *** prevented quality ***,the study reveals that the improvement effect driven by human capital came from both innovation-induced and managerial efficiency improvement channels and was more prominent for large or foreign-funded enterprises in the eastern *** findings highlight the role of human capital in China's remarkable export performance from an endogenous growth perspective.

As part of its efforts to promote a sustainable and high-quality development,China has pledged to reduce water consumption and create a water-efficient *** the basis of identifying the institutional root causes of excessive capital allocation and excessive water consumption in China’s water-intensive industrial sectors,this study elaborates how the national water-efficient cities assessment contributes to optimized capital *** research shows that national water-efficient cities assessment has motivated local governments to compete for water *** conserve water,local governments regulated the entry and exit of water-intensive enterprises,discouraged excessive investments in water-intensive sectors,and phased out obsolete water-intensive capacities within their *** approach has resulted in mutually beneficial outcomes,including improved allocation of capital,enhanced water efficiency,and reduced *** paper offers policy recommendations for establishing a water-efficient society throughout the 14^(th) Five-Year Plan(2021-2025)period by presenting empirical evidence on the policy effects of resource efficiency evaluation.
