Epidemiological characteristics of live births with esophageal atresia in sao paulo State,Brazil,from 2005 to 2018

Background The estimated prevalence of esophageal atresia(EA)is 1 in 2500–4500 live births(LBs).Researchers have already identified risk factors,but the mechanisms are still *** aim of this study is to identify EA prevalence trends and its risk factors in the São paulo State(SPS)population *** We conducted a population-based study using all EA cases identified by the Live Births Information System across 14 years(2005–2018)to estimate EA prevalence trends in recent years,stratified by maternal age and SPS geographical *** calculated the prevalence trends,regression coefficient(β),annual percent change(APC),and 95%confidence interval(CI).Results We found 820 EA cases among 8,536,101 LBs with a prevalence of 1.0/10,000 LBs in SPS,*** was no significant difference in distribution by *** all the cases,the majority(65%)were Caucasian;51.8%were born at term;43%had weight of≥2500 g;95.4%were singleton;and 73.4%of births were by cesarean *** 2005 to 2018,there was an increasing trend of EA prevalence(APC=6.5%)with the highest APC of 12.2%.The highest EA prevalence rate(1.7/10,000 LB)was found in the group with maternal age of≥35 *** significant seasonal variation was found based on the conception month(p=0.061).Conclusions EA had an increasing prevalence trend in SPS,Brazil,in recent years,with the highest prevalence rate in the group with maternal age of≥35 *** seasonality was *** population-based study is the first to summarize the current epidemiology of EA in SPS LB.

Construction strategies for a NATM tunnel in sao paulo, Brazil, in residual soil

Aim: To evaluate the influence of identifying victims of air disasters in São paulo on experts’ quality of life (QoL). Methods: QoL was evaluated using the abbreviated version of the World Health Organization (WHO) quality of life questionnaire (WHOQOL-bref). We assessed 29 forensic experts who worked in air disasters in São paulo and 29 experts who have not worked. The results were analyzed with Student’s t-tests;we compared the QoL scores of individuals at the time of the accident with their current QoL scores, and the scores of the control group were compared with the current scores of the disaster group. Results: Statistical analyses revealed a significant decrease in forensic expert QoL when they worked at the accident site, and this result was evident in all WHOQOL-bref domains. No significant difference was observed between the experts’ current QoL scores and those of the control group. Conclusions: The identification of air disaster victims in the city of São paulo significantly decreased expert health-related QoL (HRQoL) with regard to physical and psychological aspects, social relationships and environment domains. This disturbance on the QoL was not persistent over the years.

Application of Geophysical Logging and Straddle Packers for the Investigation of a Fractured Aquifer in a Contaminated Area by Chlorinated Solvents in sao paulo State, Brazil

The investigation of contaminated areas in fractured aquifers represents a great technical challenge, due to the frequent conditions of heterogeneity and anisotropy of these environments, which often make it difficult to identify and predict pathways of subsurface contamination. This work aims to contribute to the development of this subject, through the presentation of the results of an investigation in which geophysical logging tools and straddle packers were used, which allowed the development of a more suitable hydrogeological conceptual model of the study area. Two boreholes were drilled and geophysical logging (gamma, caliper and high resolution acoustic televiewer) were used for the geological-structural characterization of the aquifer. Heatpulse flowmeter and straddle packers were then used to obtain data on hydraulic potentials and flows and for the collection of discrete water samples for chemical analysis. Two types of gneiss rocks were identified below the weathering zone (thickness >30 m), one with predominance of mafic bands, more weathered and with a higher fracture density, up to 65 m, and another deeper one, with the predominance of felsic bands. Seven groups of fractures were defined, being those of Group 1, with low dip angles, the most frequent and important for flow until 65 m, and Group 2 (N to NE-SW with high dips to W and NW) more frequent in deeper felsic gneisses. Downward hydraulic potentials were identified down to 65 m and upward potentials from the bottom up to 65 m. A hydraulic test allowed identifying the occurrence of hydraulic connection between the shallow weathering zone and the underlying fractured aquifer.

Evidence of Shock Metamorphism Effects in Allochthonous Breccia Deposits from the Colonia Crater,sao paulo,Brazil

The 3.6 km-diameter Colonia impact crater, centred at 2352'03"S and 4642'27"W,?lies 40 km to the south-west of the S?o paulo city. The structure was formed on the crystalline basement rocks and displays a bowl-shaped with steeper slope near the top that decreases gently toward the centre of the crater. Over recent years were drilled two boreholes inside the crater, which reached a maximum depth of 142 m and 197 m. Geological profile suggests four different lithological associations: 1) unshocked crystalline basement rocks (197 - 140 m);2) fractured/brecciated basement rocks (140 - 110 m);3) polymictic allochthonous breccia deposits (110 - 40 m);and 4) post-impact deposits (40 - 0 m). Petrographic characterisation of the polymictic allochthonous breccia reveals a series of distinctive shock-metamorphic features, including, among others, planar deformation features in quartz, feldspar and mica, ballen silica, granular texture in zircon and melt-bearing impact rocks. The occurrence of melt particles and very high-pressure phase transformation in suevite breccia suggest a shock pressure regime higher than 60 GPa.

A Method for Environmental Data Management Applied to Megasites in the State of sao paulo, Brazil

The management of contaminated areas with multiple sources of contamination (megasites) is among the biggest challenges for the Brazilian environmental agencies, especially because aquifers in big urban areas, like the sao paulo Metropolitan Region, are important sources of water for human supply purposes. One of the main reasons that hamper the proper management of urban environmental problems is a lack of a unified system where all information can be easily integrated into regional studies. To address this problem, a method for data integration and management using a Geographic Information System (GIS) was developed. This method was applied to the case of a regional contamination of an aquifer by chlorinated solvents at a former industrial district in sao paulo city, named Jurubatuba, but the final product might also be used for data management of contaminated areas for the entire State of sao paulo. The main result obtained was that the site-by-site approach for aquifer contamination management is ineffective. Furthermore, there are many other suspected and potential sources of contamination without any information available after more than 10 years since the contamination problem was discovered at the FIZ 131.

Corn Water Variables Assessments from Earth Observation Data in the sao paulo State, Southeast Brazil

Landsat satellite images and agrometeorological data were used together for modelling the crop coefficient （Kc） in irrigation pivots composed by a mixture of corn hybrids from a commercial farm for grains and silage, located at the northwestern side of sao paulo state, Brazil. After developing relationships between Kc and the accumulated degree-days （DDac） and having yield data for 2012 available, they were applied in the whole state, to upscale the crop water variables, during the GS （growing seasons） of a second-harvest crop from March to August. Spatial thermohydrological differences among the main corn growing regions were clear. The largest CWP （crop water productivity） values and SD （standard deviations） were for Itapetininga with an average value of 1.60 ± 0.43 kg m-3, while the lowest ones were for Presidente Prudente （0.81±0.21 kg m-3）. As corn is important for these growing regions, being inside of the priorities from the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, these results should be considered for a rational exploration, including both, irrigation and rainfed conditions, as the actual water scarcity can bring much competition with other non-agricultural sectors.
