Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases in College Students in the Brazilian Western Amazon Region

The objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs) and associated lifestyle factors in college students in rio branco, Acre, Brazilian Western Amazon region. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 874 undergraduate students from a public university. The general prevalence of CNCDs was 15.6%. After adjusting for sex and age, the CNCD-associated lifestyle factors included the following: sedentary during leisure time (prevalence ratio (PR): 1.67;95% confidence interval (CI): 1.12 - 2.48), sedentary in locomotion by walking (PR: 1.34;95% CI: 1.00 - 1.79), current smoker (PR: 1.66;95% CI: 1.07 - 2.58), unsatisfactory self-rated health status (PR: 2.31;95% CI: 1.84 - 2.88), overweight (PR: 1.67;95% CI: 1.14 - 2.46) and obese (PR: 3.30;95% CI: 2.18 - 5.01). The high prevalence of CNCDs identified in this group of college students highlights the need for swift action to promote healthy lifestyles among youth.

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and associated factors of unsatisfactory self-rated health in university students. A cross-sectional study was conducted in graduate students of a Public University in the city of rio branco in the Western Brazilian Amazon. The overall prevalence of unsatisfactory self-rated health was 23.0%. After adjusting for gender and age, the factors associated with unsatisfactory self-rated health were as follows: sedentarism during leisure time (prevalence ratio (PR): 2.26;95% CI: 1.56 - 3.29), consuming meals only in restaurants (PR: 1.48;95% CI: 1.14 - 1.94), insomnia (PR: 1.86;95% CI: 1.50 - 2.30), headaches (PR: 2.17;95% CI: 1.52 - 3.09), and back pain (PR: 2.03;95% CI: 1.58 - 2.60). Thus, a high prevalence of unsatisfactory self-rated health was identified in this group of university students. The findings suggest immediate implementation of programs to promote healthy behaviors and to prevent headaches, back pain and insomnia.

The process of development of the Amazon, in post-1970, has led to serious socio-economic and environmental problems, such as the struggle for land ownership and huge deforestation. Conservation units, such as extractive reserves (RESEX), appear as sustainable development alternatives for the region. Today, solid waste has become one of the main environmental problems, particularly in forest areas. The aim of the present work is to analyze the production and destination of solid waste in the Chico Mendes RESEX, state of Acre, in the periods 1996/1997, 2005/2006 and 2014/2015. We work with the methodology of the ASPF project, developed at the Federal University of Acre (UFAC), based on indicators of economic results, as well as the production and destination of solid waste. The results indicate a considerable increase in the generation of solid waste in the forest, especially of plastics coming from goods acquired in the market and without adequate disposal.

High-fat diets affect male reproduction and sexual ***,we evaluated the effects of prolonged resveratrol administration on the metabolic,sperm,and testicular parameters of rats fed a cafeteria *** Wistar rats were divided at weaning into control(Cv n=20)and cafeteria(CAF,n=16)*** 3 months,half of them were given daily supplementations of resveratrol(C-R,n=10;CAF-R,n=8)at a dosage of 30 mg kg-1 body mass for 2 *** were killed at 5 months of age,and blood,spermatozoa,and testes were collected for further *** were analyzed by one-way ANOVA,and P<0.05 was considered statistically *** CAF diet promoted hyperglycemia(P<0.0001),and treatment with resveratrol reversed this condition(P<0.0001).The CAF diet reduced sperm viability and motility,while resveratrol improved these parameters(F<0.05).Regarding testicular morphology,the height of the seminiferous epithelium was reduced in the CAF group compared with that of the C group(P=0.0007).Spermatogenic cell proliferation was also reduced in the CAF group compared with that of the C ***,the CAF-R showed an increase in cell proliferation rate compared with that of the untreated CAF group(P=0.0024).Although it did not modify body mass,the consumption of a CAF diet promoted hyperglycemia,adverse testicular morphology remodeling,and abnormal sperm,which were attenuated by treatment with resveratrol,thus suggesting a protective effect of this antioxidant on spermatogenesis.

Objective To assess the influence of age on the error of estimate （EE） of maximal oxygen uptake （VO2max） using sex and population specific-equations in cycle ergometer exercise testing, since estimated VO2 max is associated with a substantial EE, often exceeding 20%, possibly due to intrinsic variability of mechanical efficiency. Methods 1850 adults （68% men）, aged 18 to 91 years, underwent maximal cycle ergometer cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Cardiorespiratory fitness （CRF） was assessed relative to sex and age [younger （18 to 35 years）, middle-aged （36 to 60 years） and older （〉 60 years）]. VO2max [mL.（***）-1] was directly measured by assessment of gas exchange and estimated using sex and population specific-equations. Measured and estimated values of VO2max and related EE were compared among the three age- and sex-specific groups. Results Directly measured VO2max of men and women were 29.5 ± 10.5 mL.（***）-1 and 24.2 ± 9.0 mL.（kg·min） -1 （P 〈 0.01）. EE [mL·（kg·min）-1] and percent errors （%E） for men and women had similar values, 0.5 ± 3.2 and 0.4 ± 2.9 mL·（kg·min）-1, and -0.8 ± 13.1% and -1.7 ± 15.4% （P 〉 0.05）, respectively. EE and %E for each age-group were, respectively, for men： younger = 1.9 ± 4.1 mL·（kg·min）-1 and 3.8 ± 10.5%, middle-aged = 0.6 ± 3.1 mL.（kg·min）-1 and 0.4 ± 10.3%, older = -0.2 ± 2.7 mL·（kg·min） -1 and -4.2 ± 16.6% （P 〈 0.01）; and for women： younger = 1.2 ± 3.1 mL.（***）-1 and 2.7 ±10.0%, middle-aged = 0.7 ± 2.8 mL·（kg·min）-1 and 0.5 ± 11.1%, older = -0.8 ± 2.3 mL-（kg·min）-1 and -9.5 ± 22.4% （P 〈 0.01）. Conclusion VO2max were underestimated in younger age-groups and were overestimated in older age groups. Age significantly influences the magnitude of the EE of VO2max in both men and women and should be considered when CRF is estimated using population specific equations, rather than directly measured.

AIM:To investigate whether butyrate or glutamine enemas could diminish inflammation in experimental diversion ***:Wistar specific pathogen-free rats were submitted to a Hartmann's end colostomy and treated with enemas containing glutamine,butyrate,or *** were administered twice a week in the excluded segment of the colon from 4 to 12 wk after the surgical ***-up colonoscopy was performed every 4 wk for 12 *** effect of treatment was evaluated using video-endoscopic and histologic scores and measuring interleukin-1β,tumor necrosis factor-alpha,and transforming growth factor beta production in organ cultures by enzyme linked immunosorbent ***:Colonoscopies of the diverted segment showed mucosa with hyperemia,increased number of vessels,bleeding and mucus *** with either glutamine or butyrate induced significant reductions in both colonoscopic(P < 0.02) and histological scores(P < 0.01) and restored the densities of collagen fibers in tissue(P = 0.015;P = 0.001),the number of goblet cells(P = 0.021;P = 0.029),and the rate of apoptosis within the epithelium(P = 0.043;P = 0.011) to normal *** high levels of cytokines in colon explants from rats with diversion colitis significantly decreased to normal values after treatment with butyrate or ***:The improvement of experimental diversion colitis following glutamine or butyrate enemas highlights the importance of specific luminal nutrients in the homeostasis of the colonic mucosa and supports their utilization for the treatment of human diversion colitis.
