Exploring patterns and consequences of land consumption in a coastal city-region

Background:The rapid expansion of built-up areas and land consumption with unsustainable spatial patterns in coastal urban areas has become a global major concern due to its far-reaching consequences for human daily life,environmental sustainability,and living organisms.However,the research on this phenomenon in these areas has received less attention.To fill this gap,we conducted a study to explore the spatial patterns of land consumption at both micro-and macro-levels and to evaluate its consequences in terms of sustainable development in a coastal city-region of Mazandaran Province in northern Iran.To achieve these two goals,we combined two methods of urban land density function and landscape expansion index(LEI)to explore spatial patterns of land consumption and also evaluated the sustainability of the region with two methods of the hierarchical analytical process(AHP)and urban sustainability index(USI).Results:The spatial patterns of land consumption in the city-region of Mazandaran from 1996 to 2016 at the macro-level changed from a decentralized-sprawl to a centralized-sprawl pattern.At the micro-level,the dominant spatial pattern of land consumption in the city-region changed gradually from the outlying pattern towards the edge expansion and infilling patterns.Also,the spatial pattern of the built-up patches in the majority of the urban areas had conformity with the dominant pattern of the region.Besides,the spatial patterns of land consumption in the region were in an unsustainable state and were changing towards more unsustainability.The absence of urban containment policies and plans could lead to further destruction of the natural environment and increase its unsustainability.Conclusions:Our results indicate that the urban areas of the coastal Mazandaran have the same behavior in the spatial pattern of land consumption at the macro-and micro-levels and all are in the same direction and follow the dominant pattern of the region.

This paper addresss border conflicts in the Gulf,in particular the recent blockade of Qatar by its neighbouring countries in 2017.In coastal conflict areas,effective systems and planning strategies to preserve ecosystems and biodiversity must go beyond national and political borders and need to be translated and implemented by authorities,planners,environmental scientists and coastal management experts.This paper suggests an ecological and bottom up approach to connect ecosystems and protected areas across political boundaries in the Hawar Islands area between Qatar and Bahrain,highlighting the historical dispute and recent crisis,focussing on future visions and practical proposals for comprehensive planning projects towards sustainable urban futures.The result is an approach to peace-building that refers to scientific diplomacy and that can contribute to mitigating the negative impact of the crisis,as well as preparing revitalisation design strategies focussed on ecology,development,social responsibility and resilience that foster collaboration between diverse sectors of community,organisations,and stakeholders to inspire holistic vision of the problems and opportunities for the future.

Mapping winter wheat using phenological feature of peak before winter on the North China Plain based on time-series MODIS data

By employing the unique phenological feature of winter wheat extracted from peak before winter （PBW） and the advantages of moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer （MODIS） data with high temporal resolution and intermediate spatial resolution, a remote sensing-based model for mapping winter wheat on the North China Plain was built through integration with Landsat images and land-use data. First, a phenological window, PBW was drawn from time-series MODIS data. Next, feature extraction was performed for the PBW to reduce feature dimension and enhance its information. Finally, a regression model was built to model the relationship of the phenological feature and the sample data. The amount of information of the PBW was evaluated and compared with that of the main peak （MP）. The relative precision of the mapping reached up to 92% in comparison to the Landsat sample data, and ranged between 87 and 96% in comparison to the statistical data. These results were sufficient to satisfy the accuracy requirements for winter wheat mapping at a large scale. Moreover, the proposed method has the ability to obtain the distribution information for winter wheat in an earlier period than previous studies. This study could throw light on the monitoring of winter wheat in China by using unique phenological feature of winter wheat.

Within the context of in-field path planning this paper discusses freeformpath fitting for theminimisation of the number of transitions between headland path and interior laneswithin agricultural fields.This topic ismotivated by two observations.Due to crossings of tyre traces such transitions in practice often cause an increase of compacted area.Furthermore,for very tight angles between headland path and interior lanes undesired hairpin turnsmay becomenecessary due to the limited agility of in-field operating tractors.Byminimising the number of interior lanes both detrimental effects can be mitigated.The potential of minimising the number of interior lanes by freeform path fitting is evaluated on 10 non-convex real-world fields including obstacle areas,and compared to the more common technique of fitting straight interior lanes.

Environmental considerations have prompted the use of renewable energy resources worldwide for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.An accurate prediction of wind speed plays a major role in environmental planning,energy system balancing,wind farm operation and control,power system planning,scheduling,storage capacity optimization,and enhancing system reliability.This paper proposes an accurate prediction of wind speed based ona Recursive Radial Basis Function Neural Network(RRBFNN)possessing the three inputs of wind direction,temperature and wind speed to improve modern power system protection,control and management.Simulation results confirm that the proposed model improves the wind speed prediction accuracy with least error when compared with other existing prediction models.

For thousands of years, cities have been the center of civilization. According to that, detecting, monitoring and controlling urban growth became the most urgent need in urban planning and urban development process to get the expected results that can build a concrete base for decision makers to drive the polices toward best track. The issue of this paper is about urban growth and planning models and techniques such as geographic information system (GIS), cellular automata (CA), genetic algorithm (GA), regression model (R model) and etc. The main objective of this paper is to summarize the 70 scientific papers concern about urban growth to make a review and find out the most important objective, factors, techniques and results for best approach to studying urban growth. The criteria of choosing the papers are that each paper should focus mainly on urban growth modeling and techniques, also, using wide variety of data and factors. This paper aims to fill the gap of absence of the best methods for studying urban growth, as there is a diversity in the methods used, and there is also an absence of exemplary methods or optimal methods for using analytical tools to study urban growth. So, this paper tries to make it easy for researcher to mix the suitable techniques to get acceptable result for their hypothesis. The results assert combining two or more than two techniques and model to assure that the simulation or prediction models can give real and right approaches. However, most researches focused on combining specific techniques with models such as Cellular Automata CA-Markov Chain MC Model-Logistic regression or Cellular Automata CA-Markov Chain MC model or GIS-MCDM or GIS Based AHP etc. Although, in many references some of these techniques were combined together to extract best result. From Yokohama to Sendai: Approaches to Participation in International Disaster Risk Reduction Frameworks

Taking the importance of local action as a starting point, this analysis traces the treatment of participation of local and community actors through the three international frameworks for disaster risk reduction(DRR): the Yokohama Strategy and Plan of Action for a Safer World, the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005–2015, and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030(SFDRR). The study finds a concerning shift away from valuing local community input and toward promoting technological advances. Community actors went from valued partners with their own expertise and relevant beliefs in Yokohama Strategy to ‘‘aid recipients’ ’ to whom tailored risk information must be transmitted(in SFDRR). This shift may reflect the top-down nature of negotiated international agreements or a broader shift toward investments in technological solutions. Whatever the cause, given widespread recognition of the importance of local knowledge and participation and growing recognition of the importance of intra-community differences in vulnerability, it suggests the need for reconsideration of both the discourse and the practice of involving community-level actors in DRR planning and implementation.

Coupling of crop assignment and vehicle routing for harvest planning in agriculture

A method for harvest planning based on the coupling of crop assignment with vehicle routing is presented.Given a setting with multiple fields,a path network connecting these,multiple depots at which a number of harvesters are initially located,the main question addressed is:Which crop out of a set of different crops to assign to each field when accounting for the given setting?It must be answered by every farm manager at the beginning of every work-cycle starting with plant seeding and ending with harvesting.Rather than solving an assignment problem only,it is here also accounted for the connectivity between fields.In practice,fields are often located distant apart.Traveling costs of machinery and limited harvesting windows demand optimized operation and route planning.Therefore,the proposed method outputs crop assignments to fields and simultaneously determines crop-tours,i.e.,optimized sequences in which to service fields of the same crop during harvest.It is of particular relevance for larger farms and groups of farms that collaborate and share machinery.Integer programming based exact algorithms are derived.For large numbers of fields,where these algorithms may not be tractable due to computational constraints,elements of clustering and the solution of local Traveling Salesman Problems are added,thereby on the one hand rendering the method heuristic and in general suboptimal,but on the other hand maintaining large-scale applicability.
