Establishment and validation of an adherence prediction system for lifestyle interventions in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Direct-acting antivirals failed to reduce the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma occurrence in hepatitis C virus associated cirrhosis: A real-world study

Effect of electroacupuncture on brain-derived neurotrophic factor mRNA expression in mouse hippocampus following cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury

OBJECTIVE： This work aims to observe the effects of electroacupuncture on brain-derived neuro- trophic factor （BDNF） mRNA expression in mouse hippocampus following cerebral ischemia-reperfu- sion injury. METHODS： The models of mouse cerebral isch- emia-reperfusion injury were established. A total of 96 healthy mice were randomly assigned into 4 groups, namely, the sham surgery, model, mod- el ＋ electroacupuncture, and mode ＋ hydergine groups. Mice in the model ＋ electroacupuncturegroup were treated through electroacupuncture at the Shenshu （BL 23）, Geshu （BL 17）, and Baihui （GV 20） acupoints. Mice in the model＋hydergine group were intragastrically administered with hy- dergine （0.77 mg/***-l）. The levels of BDNF mRNA expressions in the hippocampus were ana- lyzed through a semi-quantitative reverse transcrip- tion-polymerase chain reaction assay on days 1 and 7 after the surgeries. RESULTS： BDNF mRNA expressions in the mouse hippocampus of the model group on days 1 and 7 after the surgery were higher than those of the sham surgery group （both P〈0.01）. On days 1 and 7 of the electroacupuncture treatment, BDNF mRNA expression in the mouse hippocampus of the mod- el ＋ electroacupuncture group was significantly ele- vated compared with the model group （both P〈 0.01） or the model ＋ hydergine group （both P〈 0.01）. On days 1 and 7 of the hydergine treatment, BDNF mRNA expression in the mouse hippocam- pus of the model ＋ hydergine group tended to in- crease compared with the model group; however, statistical significance was not achieved （both P〉 0.05）. CONCLUSION： Electroacupuncture treatment en- hances endogenous BDNF expression, which may improve the survival environment for intracerebral neurons and inhibit the apoptosis of hippocampal cells.

Effect of allogeneic umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell transplantation in a rat model of hepatic cirrhosis

OBJECTIVE：To determine the effects of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell （UCMSC） transplantation, alone or in combination with tanshi- none IIA （Tan ⅡA） on hepatic cirrhosis in rats. METHODS： A rat model of cirrhosis was established. Rats were divided into control, UCMSC, and UCSMC plus Tan IIA groups. Rats in the UCMSC group were injected via the tail vein with 0.2 mL Dil-labeled UCMSC suspension. Intraperitoneal Tan ⅡA injections （20 mg/kg） were started on the day of UCMSC transplantation in the UCMSC plus Tan IIA group, and continued for 7 consecutive days thereafter. Rats were sacrificed 1 day, 3 days, 1 month, and 3 months after transplantation and the numbers of Dil-labeled UCMSCs colonizing the liver were determined. Albumin （ALB） and alanine aminotransferase （ALT） levels were measured in venous blood, and mRNA and protein expression lev- els of human ALB and cytokeratin （CK）-18 in liver tissues were determined by reverse transcrip- tion-polymerase chain reaction and western blotting, ***： Serum ALT levels were significantly lower and serum ALB levels significantly higher in rats in the UCMSC group compared with the control group （P 〈 0.05）. Hepatic CK-18 and ALB mRNA and protein expression levels increased after transplantation, and were significantly higher in the UCMSC plus Tan ⅡA group compared with the UCMSC group （P 〈 0.05）.CONCLUSION： Human UCMSCs transplanted into rats with liver cirrhosis can grow and differentiate into hepatocyte-like cells resulting in improved liver function in vivo. Tan ⅡA further influenced transplantation outcomes.

To explore advantages of Chinese medicine （CM） by analyzing differences in the origin of philosophy for human health between CM and Westem medicine （WM）. Methodologically, a distinctive feature of CM is its systems theory, which is also the difference between CM and WM. Since the birth of CM, it has taken the human body as a whole from the key concepts of ＂qi, blood, yin-yang, viscera （Zang-Fu）, and meridian and channel＂, rather than a single cell or a particular organ. WM evolves from the Westem philosophic way of thinking and merely uses natural sciences as the foundation. The development of WM is based on human structures, or anatomy, and therefore, research of WM is also based on the way of thinking of decomposing the whole human body into several independent parts, which is the impetus of promoting the development of WM. The core of CM includes the holistic view and the dialectical view. Chinese herbal medicines contain various components and treat a disease from multiple targets and links. Therefore, Chinese herbal medicines treat a diseased state by regulating and mobilizing the whole body rather than just regulating a single factor, since the diseased state is not only a problem in a local part of the body but a local reflection of imbalance of the whole body.
