Occurrence of perfluoroalkyl acids in precipitation from Shenyang,China

Perfluorosulfonates (PFSAs) and perfluorocarboxylates (PFCAs) in precipitation collected from Shenyang, China were determined. Snow samples were collected in the snow event on March 4, 2007 from 34 sites involving both the urban and suburban areas in Shenyang. The snowmelt was preconcentrated by solid phase extraction and analyzed using LC-MS method. Measurable amounts of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAS) were found in precipitation samples from Shenyang, demonstrating that wet deposition is one possible pathway for the removing of the selected PFAS chemicals from atmosphere. Major PFAS detected were PFOS (environmental behavior and the evaluation of human exposure to PFAS.

Toxicity of perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoate

Persistent perfluorinated organic compounds, such as perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) are used in a variety of industrial applications. They are very stable in the environment, distribute widely in the global environment and in wild life, and are detected in human sera. Our searches have detected ppt levels of PFOS and PFOA in the surface water of Japan and China; their levels are generally more than ten times higher in city areas. Neither PFOS nor PFOA is removed by the purification process of city water. Both PFOS and PFOA are detected in sera of all the people of Japan and China (about 1000 times as high as those in surface water), and their concentrations are increasing in both countries, especially in China. PFOS and PFOA primarily distribute to the liver and cause the liver toxicity. They also cause developmental toxicity. PFOS which is not genotoxic in a variety of assay system including our in vivo comet assay, induced tumors of the liver, thyroid and mammary gland of rats. PFOA which is weakly carcinogenic is not mutagenic in many studies including our in vivo comet assay.

Invasive infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes emm89 strains has been increasing in several countries linked to a recently emergent clade of emm89 strains,designated clade 3.In Japan,the features of emm89 S.pyogenes strains,such as clade classification,remains unknown.In this study,we collected emm89 strains isolated from both streptococcal toxic shock syndrome(STSS)(89 STSS isolates)and noninvasive infections(72 non-STSS isolates)in Japan from 2011 to 2019,and conducted wholegenome sequencing and comparative analysis,which resulted in classification of a large majority into clade 3 regardless of disease severity.In addition,invasive disease-associated factors were found among emm89 strains,including mutations of control of virulence sensor,and absence of the hylP1 gene encoding hyaluronidase.These findings provide new insights into genetic features of emm89 strains.

The concentration of perfluorooctane sulfonate(PFOS)and perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA)in precipitation collected at both urban and suburban areas of Dalian city in China were analyzed with the purpose to investigate the atmospheric contamination by these chemicals in Dalian.PFOS and PFOA were ubiquitous in all the precipitation samples,indicating the extensive pollution by these compounds in the atmosphere in Dalian. In the samples collected on 2006-12-16,the geometric mean value(GM)of PFOS concentration and PFOA concentration were 154.08 ng/L and 21.84 ng/L,respectively.Concentration of PFOS and PFOA in the precipitation in Dalian was much higher than that in Shenyang,an inland city in China.Different precipitations contained PFOS and PFOA at nearly the same order of magnitude.The results in this study offer an indication that wet deposition must be considered as a source of PFCs to the ground environment.

The Three Gorge Reservoir(TGR)is the largest reservoir in China and its water quality is an important health concern,we have determined the concentrations of PCDD/PCDFs and PCBs in the water samples collected from three seasons:Augest 2004,January 2005 and Augest 2005.The results show that the levels of dioxins in the TGR are much lower than other reported water sources.The main dioxins are hepta- and octa-chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins(CDDs)and chlorinated dibenzofurans(CDFs).Since the levels of dioxins may,change after the last water-store stage,the present sntdy,provides important data to compare the water quality in the TGR in the future.

Genetic polymorphism of CYP2A6 is one of the potential factors determining tobacco-related cancer risk

While we studied pharmacokinetics of SM-12502 which was under development as an anti-PAF agent, we found three subjects showing a slow metabolic phenotype in its pharmacokinetics. Analyzing the genes for CYP2A6 from the three subjects, we discovered that the three subjects possessed the whole CYP2A6 gene deletion (CYP2A6*4C), a novel genetic polymorphism of the CYP2A6 gene. Genetically engineered Salmonella YG7108 cells expressing human CYP2A6 or CYP2E1 together with the NADPH-CYP reductase were established in our laboratory to compare the mutagen-producing capacity of these enzymes for various N-nitrosamines. We found that CYP2E1 was responsible for the metabolic activation of N-nitrosamines with relatively short alkyl chains, whereas CYP2A6 was involved in the metabolic activation of N-nitrosamines possessing relatively bulky alkyl chains such as a tobacco-specific nitrosamine, NNK, which has been known to cause lung tumor in rodents. Thus, to examine a hypothesis that individuals possessing the CYP2A6*4C have the reduced risk of lung cancer due to the lack of the capacity of the metabolic activation of certain carcinogens in tobacco smoke, a case-control study was performed.

Architectural heritage comprises one o the most important elements of mountain settlements in Greece. It holds high cultural value, represents the tangible continuation of the past and forms the unique character and identity of each mountain region. Yet, controversy regarding funding for its preservation often arises. In this paper, we used two Contingent Valuation surveys to estimate the socia benefit deriving from protecting the traditiona architecture in the mountainous village of Sirako and through it, to examine perceptions and attitudes o local residents and visitors. research findings revealed a strong social will in favor of the good's protection followed by high percentages of positive willingness to pay(WTP). However, WTP is significantly higher among residents. Cultura heritage value, of the good, appears to prevail, along with the environmental one. However, both residents and visitors pointed out that local heritage, if wellpreserved, will boost tourism development. Residents appeared to better recognize the true level o architectural decay, expressed higher apprehension for its protection and were willing to pay higher amount of money. Tourists, on the other side expressed high satisfaction for their visit, appreciated the beauty and serenity emerging from local built and natural environment and spent several days visiting the surrounding area. The longer they stayed and gotfamiliar with the village, the more willing they were to contribute to local heritage's protection. Percentages reflecting indifference for protecting architecture were extremely low. Yet, they were higher among tourists. Traditional architecture is considered as public good; an opinion resulting in an important percentage of visitors stating that national government should provide the necessary funding. In addition, the architecture appears to hold a high level of topicality. Those descending from Sirako or emotionally connected to it, of both social groups,turned out to be more concerned about the good and with a stronger sense

In China,many geological hazards occurred in remote mountainous regions,and it was time-consuming to disseminate disaster information for the responsible parties to make timely judgements.Besides,only relying on professionals to monitor and manage disasters was demanding and costly.The Chinese government created a system to engage residents in the process of disaster risk management,namely’public Participation Monitoring and Warning’(PPMW),to disseminate timely disaster information and bring down management costs.The objective of this system was to reduce casualties with minimum cost by organizing residents to evacuate from disasters in advance.This paper introduced the PPMW system,including its structure,operation mechanism by reviewing government documents and research articles,and its implementation by a case study of a landslide at Boli village(E 101°01’,N 27°29’),Yanyuan County,Sichuan Province,China on July 19th 2018.Further,this paper analyzed the strengths and limitations of the system and discussed its future development.It had the potential to become an affordable disaster risk management tool for other countries facing similar situations to China.
