Optimization of the heat treatment of additively manufactured Ni-base superalloy IN718

Additive manufacturing(AM) of Ni-base superalloy components can lead to a significant reduction of weight in aerospace applications. AM of IN718 by selective laser melting results in a very fine dendritic microstructure with a high dislocation density due to the fast solidification process. The complex phase composition of this alloy, with three different types of precipitates and high residual stresses, necessitates adjustment of the conventional heat treatment for AM parts. To find an optimized heat treatment, the microstructures and mechanical properties of differently solution heat-treated samples were investigated by transmission and scanning electron microscopy, including electron backscatter diffraction, and compression tests. After a solution heat treatment(SHT), the Nb-rich Laves phase dissolves and the dislocation density is reduced, which eliminates the dendritic substructure. SHT at 930 or 954°C leads to the precipitation of the δ-phase, which reduces the volume fraction of the strengthening γ′-and γ′′-phases formed during the subsequent two stage aging treatment. With a higher SHT temperature of 1000°C, where no δ-phase is precipitated, higher γ′ and γ′′ volume fractions are achieved, which results in the optimum strength of all of the solution heat treated conditions.

For the simulation of exterior acoustics using the Finite Element Method (FEM), appropriate measures are needed in order to represent the radiation of acoustic energy into the far field. Among several alternatives, Infinite Elements have been proven to be a rather interesting approach. In fact, first formulations originate from the 70's already [1]. In recent years, several formulations of Infinite Elements have been developed. Especially, an optimized variant of the Mapped Wave Envelope Element concept [2] has been formulated recently by the authors [3], which is currently one of the most advanced methodologies for time-harmonic as well as selected transient acoustic simulations. The optimized formulation is based on Jacobi polynomials for the interpolation in radial. (infinite) direction, enabling an efficient solution of large scaled exterior acoustic simulations using iterative solution techniques, such as Krylov subspace solvers. Before, these solvers were prone to failure due to disadvantageous eigenvalue distributions stemming from the Infinite Elements in particular.

Background/Aim: dandruff is a common scalp problem associated with flaky and inflamed skin. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of a shampoo containing piroctone olamine and climbazole and the combination of this shampoo with a scalp tonic containing piroctone olamine and licochalcone A, derived from Glycyrrhiza inflata root extract, to reduce dandruff. Study design/Methods: After conditioning, 102 subjects (♂ 56 and 46 ♀) with moderate to very strong dandruff affection underwent a randomized half head study for 4 weeks. The volunteers’ heads were washed regularly either with a placebo or the anti-dandruff shampoo, followed by the anti-dandruff tonic application or no treatment. In a 2-week post-treatment phase, subjects only applied placebo shampoo. Every two weeks, trained experts assessed dandruff affection based on a scale of 1 to 6. At study start and after every 2 weeks, cytokine concentrations and anti-fungal activity of test products were determined in scalp wash-ups by enzyme-linked immunosorbant assays or a Malassezia colony-forming assay, respectively. results: results of expert grading and anti-fungal activity revealed a significant reduction in dandruff affection and Malassezia colony-forming units after treatment with the anti-dandruff shampoo or its combination with the tonic. dandruff affection even remained reduced in the post-treatment phase when levels of Malassezia colony-forming units had returned to baseline. Cytokine analyses proved a significant decrease in pro-inflammatory dandruff markers after treatment with both anti-dandruff products. For the shampoo/tonic combination, a superior reduction of one scalp inflammatory marker was determined even after the post-treatment phase. Conclusion: Both the rinse-off shampoo as well as its combination with the leave-on tonic excellently alleviated dandruff and its associated micro-inflammation. Production of structural components of the skin slows down and signs of skin aging appear. External influences like UV radiation and pollution contribute to signs of skin aging. They lead to an increased formation of so-called free radicals. Bioactive antioxidant compounds, such as polyphenols, have beneficial effects on skin health by free radical scavenging. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the topical effects of new and highly concentrated resveratrol containing emulsion (Medskin Solutions dr. Suwelack ag, 2% trans-resveratrol) on age-related alterations to the skin. rong>Methods:rong> A clinical observation study was performed on 20 subjects to observe the effects of a 2% resveratrol emulsion on typical signs of skin aging. Product was applied once daily for a period of 8 weeks in combination with a standardized treatment. Tested parameters were skin elasticity, skin barrier function, skin smoothness, skin thickness and density. rong>results:rong> After 8 weeks of treatment, skin pH value is significantly lowered and skin barrier function improved. The value of skin elasticity (+5.3%), and skin density (+ 10.7%) had increased, while skin roughness (-6.4%) and skin dispensability (-45.9%) had diminished. Intensity of skin redness had decreased. Furthermore, expert and participant evaluations show satisfaction, especially with regard to skin smoothness and skin moisture. Conclusion: The resveratrol emulsion shows positive outcomes by supporting reduction of skin wrinkling and increasing skin firmness, as well as reducing skin redness, and is therefore an all-round anti-aging treatment.

Power Electronic (PE) will play an essential role in future drive concepts. Nowadays, mainly water/glycol-based cooling media are used to cool PE. due to their high electrical conductivity (EC), water/glycol-based coolants cannot be used for direct cooling of the electrical components. direct cooling concepts with dedicated transmission fluids show potential usage of fluid in direct contact with electrified parts. This results in special requirements for the fluids and materials. The aimed action as a coolant requires a defined measurement and characterization of fluid properties and heat transfer in order to assess the cooling ability of a fluid. The purpose of the work was to develop a new measurement setup based on the thermal transient method with which the thermal requirements of cooling fluids for a direct cooling concept can be assessed. With this method, relevant transmission fluids have been tested and the thermal performance compared to indirect cooling effect of water/glycol is discussed. The result of the work is that the measurement method is very well suited for the application-related evaluation of the fluids. direct oil cooling with transmission fluids could increase heat transfer coefficient by a factor of 3 to 8, compared to the indirect cooing with water/glycol as cooling media.

Cachexia and pancreatic cancer: Are there treatment options?

Cachexia is frequently described in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PdAC) and is associated with reduced survival and quality of life. Unfortunately, the therapeutic options of this multi-factorial and complex syndrome are limited. This is due to the fact that, despite extensive preclinical and clinical research, the underlying pathological mechanisms leading to PdAC-associated cachexia are still not fully understood. Furthermore, there is still a lack of consensus on the definition of cachexia, which complicates the standardization of diagnosis and treatment as well as the analysis of the current literature. In order to provide an efficient therapy for cachexia, an early and reliable diagnosis and consistent monitoring is required, which can be challenging especially in obese patients. Although many substances have been tested in clinical and preclinical settings, so far none of them have been proven to have a long-term effect in ameliorating cancer-associated cachexia. However, recent studies have demonstrated that multidimensional therapeutic modalities are able to alleviate pancreatic cancer-associated cachexia and ultimately improve patients’ outcome. In this current review, we propose a stepwise and pragmatic approach to facilitate and standardize the treatment of cachexia in pancreatic cancer patients. This strategy consists of nutritional, dietary, pharmacological, physical and psychological methods.
