Convergent relationships between flower economics and hydraulic traits across aquatic and terrestrial herbaceous plants

Maintaining open flowers is critical for successful pollination and depends on long-term water and carbon balance.Yet the relationship between how flower hydraulic traits are coordinated in different habitats is poorly understood.Here,we hypothesize that the coordination and trade-offs between floral hydraulics and economics traits are independent of environmental conditions.To test this hypothesis,we investigated a total of 27 flower economics and hydraulic traits in six aquatic and six terrestrial herbaceous species grown in a tropical botanical garden.We found that although there were a few significant differences,most flower hydraulics and economics traits did not differ significantly between aquatic and terrestrial herbaceous plants.Both flower mass per area and floral longevity were significantly positively correlated with the time required for drying full-hydrated flowers to 70%relative water content.Flower dry matter content was strongly and positively related to drought tolerance of the flowers as indicated by flower water potential at the turgor loss point.In addition,there was a trade-off between hydraulic efficiency and the construction cost of a flower across species.Our results show that flowers of aquatic and terrestrial plants follow the same economics spectrum pattern.These results suggest a convergent flower economics design across terrestrial and aquatic plants,providing new insights into the mechanisms by which floral organs adapt to aquatic and terrestrial habitats.

Effects of correlation time between noises on the noise enhanced stability phenomenon in an asymmetric bistable system

The effects of the correlation time τ between noises on the noise-enhanced stability （NES） phe- nomenon in an asymmetric bistable system driven by cross-correlated noise are investigated. The ex- pressions for the average escape time from the left metastable state TL and from the right metastable state TR are derived. The results indicate that： i） The NES effect is suppressed as the correlation time τ increases for two metastable states; ii） The increase in τ speeds up the escape process from the right state for positively correlated noise, whereas its role is reverses for negatively correlated; iii） In the escape process from the left state, the role of τ is opposite to that in escape from the right state.

Correlation Functions of an Autonomous Stochastic System with Nonlinear Time Delays

The auto-correlation function and the cross-correlation of an autonomous stochastic system with nonlinear time-delayed feedback are investigated by using the stochastic simulation method. There are prominent differences between the roles of quadratic time-delayed feedback and cubic time-delayed feedback on the correlations of an autonomous stochastic system. Under quadratic time-delayed feedback, the nonlinear time delay fails to improve the noisy state of the autonomous stochastic system, the auto-correlation decreases monotonously to zero, and the cross-correlation increases monotonously to zero with the decay time. Under cubic time-delayed feedback, the nonlinear time delay can improve the noisy state of the autonomous stochastic system; the auto-correlation and the cross-correlation show periodical oscillation and attenuation, finally tending to zero with the decay time. Comparing the correlations of the system between with nonlinear time-delayed feedback and linear time-delayed feedback, we find that nonlinear time-delayed feedback lowers the correlation strength of the autonomous stochastic system.

Mechanism of action of (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate:auto-oxidation-dependent activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 in Jurkat cells

AIM:(-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate(EGCG), a major compound of tea polyphenols, exhibited antitumor activity in previous studies. In these studies, EGCG usually inhibits EGFR, and impairs the ERK1/2 phosphorylation in tumor cells. The aim was to clarify the mechanism of ERK1/2 activation induced by EGCG. METHODS: Jurkat and 293 T cells were treated with EGCG in different culture conditions. Western Blotting(WB) was employed to analyze ERK1/2 and MEK phosphorylation. Cetuximab and FR180204 were used to inhibit cell signaling. The stability of EGCG was assessed by HPLC. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide generated by the auto-oxidation of EGCG was determined by photocolorimetric analysis. RESULTS: Activation of ERK1/2 was observed to be both time- and dose-dependent. Stimulation of cell signaling was dependent on MEK activity, but independent of EGFR activity. Unexpectedly, EGCG was depleted within one hour of incubation under traditional culture conditions. Auto-oxidation of EGCG generated a high level of hydrogen peroxide in the medium. Addition of catalase and SOD to the acidic medium inhibited the oxidation of EGCG. However, this particular condition also prevented the phosphorylation of ERK1/2. The generation of ROS by hydrogen peroxide may also induce ERK1/2 activation in Jurkat cells. CONCLUSION: ERK1/2 phosphorylation was caused by auto-oxidation of EGCG. Traditional culture conditions were determined to be inappropriate for EGCG research.

The effects of correlation between additive and multiplicative noises on the symmetry of an asymmetric bistable system are investigated. The steady-state probability distribution function of the system was calculated by using analytical and numerical methods. Results indicate that i） for the case of positive correlation between noises, as the correlation strength between additive and multiplicative noises, λ, increases, the symmetry of the system is restored; ii） for the case of negative correlation between noises, as the absolute value of λ increases, the symmetry of the system is destroyed; and iii） the analytic prediction agrees well with the stochastic simulation result.

Exploration of Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) Inhibitory Peptides from Walnut Dreg Proteins Based on In Silico and In Vitro Assessments

Walnut dreg protein hydrolysates (WDPHs) exhibit a variety of biological activities， however， the COX-2 inhibitory peptide of WDPHs remain unclear. This aim of this study was to rapidly screen for such peptides in WDPHs through a combination of in silico and in vitro analysis. In total， 1262 peptide sequences were observed by nano LC-MS/MS and four novel COX-2 inhibitory peptides (AGFP， FPGA， LFPD， and VGFP) were identified for the first time. Enzyme kinetic data indicated that AGFP， FPGA， and LFPD displayed mixed-type COX-2 inhibition， whereas VGFP was a non-competitive inhibitor. This is mainly because the peptides form hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions with residues in the COX-2 active site. These results demonstrate that computer analysis combined with in vitro evaluation allows for rapid screening of COX-2 inhibitory peptides in walnut protein dregs.

入侵地群落中的本地草食昆虫取食可以影响植物生长的适合度,从而有助于抵抗外来植物入侵。紫茎泽兰(Eupatorium adenophorum)是一种入侵性很强的外来物种,在中国南方许多省份已形成密集的单优群落。很多学者认为天敌逃逸是外来植物入侵的一个重要原因,但前期研究发现当地的几种广谱天敌能够取食紫茎泽兰。因此,本研究通过与本地同属植物异叶泽兰(E.heterophyllum)比较,来评估是否低水平的防御表达和高的生物量补偿促进了紫茎泽兰的成功入侵。本文分别比较了在广谱天敌棉铃虫(Helicoverpa armigera)取食和机械损伤情况下紫茎泽兰和异叶泽兰早期防御信号茉莉酸(JA)和茉莉酸-异亮氨酸(JA-Ile)、叶绿素荧光、非靶代谢组学特征以及补偿生长等方面的差异。研究结果表明,机械损伤和模拟取食能立即启动入侵植物紫茎泽兰和本地同属植物异叶泽兰的天敌防御,诱导两种植物特异性的生理反馈。异叶泽兰对组织损伤更为敏感,相比于入侵植物紫茎泽兰产生了更丰富的防御化合物。棉铃虫取食比机械损伤对防御诱导的影响更大;与异叶泽兰相比,紫茎泽兰具有较高的补偿生长能力,可以抵消生物量损失和防御成本的投入,受到的影响相对较小。较低的代谢防御和较高的补偿生长可能有助于紫茎泽兰的入侵成功。

Effects of Time Delay on Stability of an Unstable State in a Bistable System with Correlated Noises

Effects of time delay on stability of an unstable state in a time-delayed bistable system are investigated.The analytic expression of the transition rate W(x_(u),τ)from unstable state xu to stable state x+is derived.The numerical calculation results of W(x_(u),τ)indicate that W(x_(u),τ)decreases with the increasing multiplicative noise intensity,the additive noise intensi by and the strength of correlations between the multiplicative and the additive noise increase,but W(x_(u),τ)increases with increasing delay time.Namely,the multiplicative noise,the additive noise and the correlations between the multiplicative and the additive noises enhance the stability of the unstable state in the time-delayed bistable system but the stability is weakened by time delay.

As the oldest venomous animals,centipedes use their venom as a weapon to attack prey and for protection.Centipede venom,which contains many bioactive and pharmacologically active compounds,has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine,as shown by ancient records.Based on comparative analysis,we revealed the diversity of and differences in centipede toxin-like molecules between Scolopendra mojiangica,a substitute pharmaceutical material used in China,and S.subspinipes mutilans.More than 6000 peptides isolated from the venom were identified by electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry(ESI-MS/MS)and inferred from the transcriptome.As a result,in the proteome of S.mojiangica,246 unique proteins were identified:one in five were toxin-like proteins or putative toxins with unknown function,accounting for a lower percentage of total proteins than that in S.mutilans.Transcriptome mining identified approximately 10 times more toxin-like proteins,which can characterize the precursor structures of mature toxinlike peptides.However,the constitution and quantity of the toxin transcripts in these two centipedes were similar.In toxicity assays,the crude venom showed strong insecticidal and hemolytic activity.These findings highlight the extensive diversity of toxin-like proteins in S.mojiangica and provide a new foundation for the medical-pharmaceutical use of centipede toxin-like proteins.

Integrated analysis of changes in soil microbiota and metabolites following long-term fertilization in a subtropical maize-wheat agroecosystem

Although the application of inorganic fertilizer is a widespread agronomic practice used to boost soil productivity and crop yields,the effects on soil microbiome and the metabolic mechanisms involved in the high-yield response of crops to long-term fertilization remain poorly described.In this study,combined metagenomic and metabolomic analyses were used to explore the mechanism of crop yield response to the 20-year application of nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizers in a subtropical agroecosystem in Southwest China.Soil bacterial and fungal communities were monitored using16S r RNA(bacteria)and internal transcribed spacer 1(ITS1)full-length gene(fungi)amplicon sequencing technologies,and metabolites were detected using a liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer.The results revealed that,in addition to providing nutrients,long-term fertilization shaped the compositions of bacteria and fungi to increase crop yields.Long-term fertilization significantly increased the relative abundances of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and promoted the secretion of soil metabolites such as carbohydrates,organic acids,and organic nitrogen compounds,which were primarily enriched in amino acid metabolism pathways.The increases in carbon and nitrogen sources and bioactive substances in soil promoted the increases in plant biomass and thereby maintained soil quality and production capacity.The findings highlighted the importance of soil metabolites in maintaining soil productivity as well as crop yields,and suggested that regulating key metabolites could increase crop yields in agroecosystems.
