Liu-Wei-Di-Huang(LW) is a Yin nourishing and kidney tonifying prescription in traditional Chinese medicine with promising pharmacological characteristics that can be further exploited and developed in modern medicine. We provide a comprehensive and detailed literature report on the clinical and experimental pharmacology of LW,including its quality control parameters, phytochemistry, pharmacokinetics, and toxicology. Our literature review indicates that the LW prescription possesses a unique combination of pharmacological characteristics that can be safely used for treating very different diseases. Quality control and pharmacokinetic parameters of LW are mostly based on its major bioactive phytochemical constituents. We postulate that modulating or rebalancing the neuroendocrine immunomodulation network in the body is the underlying mechanism of the multiple pharmacological activities displayed by LW.

Teaching pharmacology to medical students in an integrated problem-based learning curriculum:an Australian perspective

ωRWR is a new patented antithrombotic small peptide which exhibits anti-coagulation effects by competitively inhibiting arginine-glycine-aspartic acid(RGD) on fibrinogen binding with αⅡbβ3 integrin on the surface of platelets. In this study, ωRWR were synthesized by solid phase peptide synthesis. This peptide could inhibit platelet aggregation and thrombus formation in a dose-dependent manner. Through establishment and optimization of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry conditions, pharmacokinetic property of ωRWR in rat was also analyzed. We further investigated the toxicity of ωRWR. The data showed that the maximum tolerance dose of ωRWR was larger than 192 mg/kg. After the injection of ωRWR for 26 weeks, the body weight and food utilization rate of the rats were normal. Organs had no pathological changes through H&E staining. In conclusion, ωRWR is a promising antithrombotic peptide for the treatment of thrombosis-related disease.
