Background Diffusion tensor imaging （DTI） permits quantitative examination within the pyramidal tract （PT） by measuring fractional anisotropy （FA）. To the best of our knowledge, the inter-variability measures of FA along the PT remain unexplained. A clear understanding of these reference values would help radiologists and neuroscientists to understand normality as well as to detect early pathophysiologic changes of brain diseases. The aim of our study was to calculate the variability of the FA at eleven anatomical landmarks along the PT and the influences of gender and cerebral hemisphere in these measurements in a sample of young, healthy volunteers. Methods A retrospective, cross-sectional study was performed in twenty-three right-handed healthy volunteers who underwent magnetic resonance evaluation of the brain. Mean FA values from eleven anatomical landmarks across the PT （at centrum semiovale, corona radiata, posterior limb of internal capsule （PLIC）, mesencephalon, pons, and medulla oblongata） were evaluated using split-plot factorial analysis of variance （ANOVA）. Results We found a significant interaction effect between anatomical landmark and cerebral hemisphere （F （10, 32）=4.516, P=0.001; Wilks＇ Lambda 0.415, with a large effect size （partial η2=0.585））. The influence of gender and age was non-significant. On average, the midbrain and PLIC FA values were higher than pons and medulla oblongata values; centrum semiovale measurements were higher than those of the corona radiata but lower than PLIC. Conclusions There is a normal variability of FA measurements along PT in healthy individuals, which is influenced by regions of interest location （anatomical landmarks） and cerebral hemisphere. FA measurements should be reported for comparing same-side and same-landmark PT to help avoid comparisons with the contralateral PT; ideally, normative values should exist for a clinically significant age group. The study of predator-prey interactions is commonly analyzed using functional responses to gain an understanding of predation patterns and the impact they have on prey *** this,little is known about predator-prey systems with multiple prey species in sites near the *** we studied the functional response of cougars(Puma concolor)in relation to their main prey,armadillo(Dasypus novemcinctus),coati(Nasua narica)and white-tailed deer(Odocoileus virginianus).Between 2004 and 2010,cougar scats were collected along 5 transects to estimate the consumption of different prey species.A relative abundance index(RAI)was calculated for each prey species and cougar using 18 camera *** compared Holling type I,II and III functional response models to determine patterns in prey consumption based on the relative abundance and biomass of each prey species *** 3 main prey species comprised 55%(armadillo),17%(coati)and 8%(white-tailed deer)of the *** I and II functional responses described consumption of the 2 most common prey species armadillos and coati similarly well,while a type I response best characterized consumption of white-tailed deer.A negative correlation between the proportions of armadillo versus coati and white-tailed deer biomass in cougar scats suggests switching to consume alternative prey,confirming high foraging plasticity of this *** work represents one of the few studies to compare functional responses across multiple prey species,combined with evidence for prey-switching at low densities of preferred prey.

Introduction Intracerebral haemorrhage(ICH)within deep structures adjacent to the third ventricle is associated with worse outcomes when compared with lobar ICH due to the critical role of deep nuclei in normal neurological *** evidence suggests another contributing factor to poor outcome is obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid outflow by clot burden causing mechanical compression of the third *** authors reviewed the incidence and outcomes of mechanical compression ICH in order to identify this high-risk group which may potentially benefit from minimally invasive *** Patients with spontaneous,non-traumatic,supratentorial ICH were identified retrospectively over a 30-month *** imaging was reviewed to assess location of the ICH,volume of the ICH,presence of hydrocephalus requiring external ventricular drain(EVD)placement,and time to clearing of the third *** was then categorised as due to‘primarily intraventricular haemorrhage(IVH)’,‘primarily mechanical compression’or‘mixed’.Functional outcomes at discharge were assessed using the modified Rankin Score(mRS).Results 287 patients met inclusion criteria,of which 39(13.5%)patients developed hydrocephalus that required *** patients had significantly higher mRS at discharge(p≤0.001)when compared with the non-EVD *** location was associated with lower odds of poor outcome compared with thalamic location(OR 0.107-0.560).Mechanical compression hydrocephalus was associated with poor outcome when compared with the primary IVH hydrocephalus subgroup(p=0.037)as well as longer time to clearing of the third ventricle(p=0.006).Conclusions Mechanical obstruction requiring EVD occurs in approximately(21/287)7.3%of all patients with spontaneous supratentorial *** is unknown if the worse morbidity in these subjects is purely related to damage to deep structures surrounding the third ventricle or if secondary damage from hydrocephalus could be mitigated with tar

Background : The objective of this study was to validate an animal model for dry eye during and after the administration of 1% ophthalmic atropine sulfate(OAS) in New Zealand white(NZW) *** : OAS(1%) was applied three times per day to 30 eyes of 15 healthy NZW rabbits. Sacrifice, enucleation, and lacrimal gland removal took place on days 15, 21,and 30(OAS group). A second group(n = 5) was used as control. Clinical evaluations took place on days 3, 10, 15, 18, 21, 24 and 30. The primary endpoints were:Schirmer I test, tear break-up time(TBUT), and corneal fluorescein staining. As secondary endpoints, clinical changes including intraocular pressure, and histopathology were *** : While OAS was administered, the Schirmer I test showed a statistically significant reduction for OAS group versus control( p groups(days 3 and 10;p = 0.001) and versus basal values(day 3;p < 0.001). Fluorescein staining showed a statistically significant difference(day 3;p = 0.001). The most frequent clinical finding was conjunctival hyperemia(76.9% OAS vs. 20% control). For histopathology, all OAS subjects presented some degree of inflammation(86.7% minimal;13.3% mild) whereas the control presented only 30% minimal inflammation. Goblet cell density showed no *** : The effectiveness of the OAS dry eye model in NZW rabbits as reported in previous studies was confirmed, provided that the application of the drug is maintained throughout the intervention;it is not a viable model after OAS administration is suspended.

The objectives of this research work were to evaluate the effect of in vitro gastrointestinal digestion (GIT) on melon peel juice (MPJ) powder from fruit processing industry by-products,considering (i) the recovery and accessibility indexes,(ii) the changes on antioxidant activity,and (iii) the prebiotic *** exposition to GIT conditions a decrease on the total phenolic content (TPC = 65.31%) and antioxidant activity by ABTS = 39.77% and DPPH = 45.91% were ***,these both parameters exhibited stable accessibility,accounting with 81.89%,76.55%,and 54.07% for TPC,ABTS and DPPH,*** gastrointestinal digestion,the non-absorbed fraction exhibited a positive impact on the growth of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus strains,possibly associated with the high content of simple sugar (glucose and fructose).This fraction also showed to be safe on Caco-2 intestinal *** findings suggest that MPJ might be used as a potential food functional ingredient.

High arsenic(As)and chromium(Cr)concentrations are currently receiving attention because of their negative effects on the environment and human *** inhabiting contaminated environments have developed resistance mechanisms against the toxicity of these ***,members of the bacterial genus Micrococcus have been isolated from different toxic metal-contaminated environments;however,knowledge concerning its resistance mechanisms to As and Cr toxicity remains *** luteus strains(An24,Mh,NE2TL6,and NE2TTS4)were isolated from the endosphere and soil of two heavy metal-contaminated sites in mexico to identify differences in the resistance mechanisms by the *** *** strains were resistant to As(As^(3+)and As^(5+)),chromate,dichromate,cobalt,copper,nickel,and *** analysis indicated that the heavy metal-resistant strains(An24,Mh,NE2TL6,and NE2TTS4)could be assigned to the *** group and had more heavy metal-resistant genes(transporters,chaperones,and enzymes)compared to reference strains of the *** group,*** NCTC 2665^(T)and Micrococcus endophyticus JCM 16951^(T).The resistant bacteria were able to biotransform As^(3+)and As^(5+)through a carbon source-dependent *** biotransformation of As5+was potentially carried out in the cytoplasm through a thioredoxin-dependent pathway,which may be coupled with biosorption.A qualitative analysis of organic acids(OAs)identified a change in the OA profile of the metal-resistant strains that was As-or *** genomic and phenotypic findings suggest that the four *** group strains evaluated in the current study have developed resistance mechanisms that may enable their survival in contaminated sites.
