Determination of the standardized ileal digestible calcium requirement of Ross broilers from hatch to day 14 post-hatch

An experiment was conducted to determine the standardized ileal digestible(SID)calcium requirement of fast-growing broilers from hatch to d 14 *** 308(n=360)male broilers were obtained on day of hatch and allocated to 1 of 5 treatments in battery *** were 6 birds per cage and 12 pens per *** treatments were formulated to contain 0.60%,0.46%,0.32%or 0.18%SID *** final treatment was formulated using total Ca to meet or exceed all nutrient requirements,including 0.90%total Ca and 0.49%non-phytate P(nPP),using the same *** treatment was the reference diet for comparison and validation of the SID Ca *** and feed were weighed at placement and on d *** and ileal contents were obtained on d 14 and excreta was collected per pen and pooled on d *** were analyzed using JMP Pro and requirements were estimated using 3different non-linear regression *** the SID Ca content in the diet from 0.18%to 0.60%improved(quadratic,P<0.05)body weight gain and mortality corrected feed conversion ratio(mFCR).The estimated SID Ca requirement to optimize gain or m FCR was between 0.39%and 0.52%.Tibia ash percent and weight increased(quadratic,P<0.05)as SID Ca content in the diet increased and the estimated SID Ca requirement was between 0.32%and 0.58%.Phosphorus utilization was improved in birds fed diets formulated using SID Ca compared with birds fed the reference *** conclusion,the SID Ca requirement of fast-growing broilers from hatch to d 14 was estimated between 0.534%and 0.398%when quadratic,straight-broken line,or quadratic-broken line regressions were *** results agree with previously published data evaluating the SID Ca requirement of fast-growth broilers from hatch to d 10.

Growth performance of nursery and grower-finisher pigs fed diets supplemented with benzoic acid

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the efficacy of benzoic acid on the growth performance of nursery and grower-finisher pigs. A randomized complete block design was used in both experiments with the initial body weight as the blocking factor. There were 3 treatments corresponding to 3 dietary levels of benzoic acid: 0, 0.3%, and 0.5%. In experiment 1, a total of 144 PIC L1050 barrows(initial body weight 7.1 ± 0.6 kg) were used with each treatment replicated 8 times. In experiment 2, a total of 288 PIC L1050 barrows(initial body weight 36.1 ± 3.6 kg) were used with each treatment replicated 16 *** were 6 barrows in each replicate pen for both experiments. Experiments 1 and 2 lasted 28 and 70 days, respectively. In experiment 1, average daily gain(ADG) of all growth phases increased linearly(P < 0.05) with increasing supplementation of benzoic acid, which led to a linear improvement in average body weight on d 28(P < 0.05). There was also an improvement in feed conversion ratio(FCR) of d 0 to 14(linear effect: P < 0.05) and in average daily feed intake(ADFI) of d 14 to 28 and d 0 to 28(linear effect:P < 0.01). In experiment 2, ADG during d 0 to 35 and d 35 to 70 and average body weight on d 35 improved linearly(P < 0.05) with increasing supplementation of benzoic acid. Average daily gain of d 0 to70 and average body weight on d 70 increased significantly in a both linear and quadratic manner. There was a linear improvement in FCR in all growth phases(P < 0.05). In conclusion, the dietary inclusion of benzoic acid at the supplementation levels of 0.3% and 0.5% significantly improved the growth performance of nursery and grower-finisher pigs in the current study; the nursery pigs responded to the dietary supplementation of benzoic acid up to 0.5% linearly while the grower-finisher pigs achieved the optimal ADG at the calculated supplementation level of 0.36%.

A comprehensive review on natural phenolic compounds as alternatives to in-feed antibiotics

Recently,I read with interest the research article entitled'Dysfunction of the adhesion G protein-coupled receptor latrophilin 1(ADGRL1/LPHN1)increases the risk of obesity published in Signal Transduction and Targeted *** report confirms and extends our findings that ADGRL1(aka latrophilin 1)regulates energy balance and glucose homeostasis.?Using affinity chromatography coupled with proteomics and electrophysiology,we showed that ADGRL1 is likely a glucose receptor in the *** findings demonstrated that lack of ADGRL1 in the hypothalamus or whole-body causes obesity and features of type 2 diabetes in *** is refreshing to see Dietzsch et al.i reached the same conclusion.

Fabrication strategies and supramolecular interactions of polymer-lipid complex nanoparticles as oral delivery systems

Oral administration of nutrient/drug is the most common and preferred route. However, a number of barriers are encountered after ingestion, limiting efficient oral nutrient/drug absorption. Both lipid-based (e.g., nanoemulsion, solid lipid nanoparticles) and polymer-based (e.g., protein and polysaccharide nanoparticles) nanoscale delivery systems have demonstrated capability to overcome some of these physiological barriers during transportation and metabolism stages. To better deal with those barriers, polymer-lipid complex nanoparticles are being explored and developed to merge the beneficial features and overcome the respective shortcomings of lipid-based and polymer-based nanoparticles. This paper aims to provide an overview of the various preparation strategies and supramolecular interactions of orally administered polymer-lipid complex nanoparticles by reviewing recent studies. Two types of polymer-lipid complex nanoparticles have been developed, i.e., lipid core with polymer shell nanoparticles and polymer core with lipid shell nanoparticles (lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles). Besides, both natural and synthetic polymers used for fabrication are discussed and their advantages and disadvantages are highlighted. Further research work is needed to optimize the fabrication and scaling up processes, so that these versatile polymer-lipid complex nanoparticles could have a significant impact on the oral delivery of nutrient/drug.

Complex pathologies of angiotensin Ⅱ-induced abdominal aortic aneurysms

Angiotensin II （Angll） is the primary bioactive peptide of the renin angiotensin system that plays a critical role in many cardiovascular diseases. Subcutaneous infusion of Angll into mice induces the development of abdominal aortic aneurysms （AAAs）. Like human AAAs, Angll-induced AAA tissues exhibit progressive changes and considerable heterogeneity. This complex pathology provides an impediment to the quantification of aneurysmal tissue composition by biochemical and immunostaining techniques. Therefore, while the mouse model of Angll-induced AAAs provides a salutary approach to studying the mechanisms of the evolution of AAAs in humans, meaningful interpretation of mechanisms requires consideration of the heterogeneous nature of the diseased tissue.

Deciphering Ascorbic Acid Regulatory Pathways in Ripening Tomato Fruit Using a Weighted Gene Correlation Network Analysis Approach

Genotype is generally determined by the co-expression of diverse genes and multiple regulatory pathways in plants. Gene co-expression analysis combining with physiological trait data provides very important information about the gene function and regulatory mechanism. L-Ascorbic acid （AsA）, which is an essential nutrient component for human health and plant metabolism, plays key roles in diverse biological processes such as cell cycle, cell expansion, stress resistance, hormone synthesis, and signaling. Here, we applied a weighted gene correlation network analysis approach based on gene expression values and AsA content data in ripening tomato （Solanum lycopersicum L.） fruit with different AsA content levels, which leads to identification of AsA relevant modules and vital genes in AsA regulatory pathways. Twenty- four modules were compartmentalized according to gene expression profiling. Among these modules, one negatively related module containing genes involved in redox processes and one positively related module enriched with genes involved in AsA biosynthetic and recycling pathways were further analyzed. The present work herein indicates that redox pathways as well as hormone-signal pathways are closely correlated with AsA accumulation in ripening tomato fruit, and allowed us to prioritize candidate genes for follow-up studies to dissect this interplay at the biochemical and molecular level.

Prognostic significance of lymphovascular infiltration in overall survival of gastric cancer patients after surgery with curative intent

Objective: Lymphovascular infiltration(LVI) is frequently detected in gastric cancer(GC) specimens. Studies have revealed that GC patients with LVI have a poorer prognosis than those without ***: In total, 1,007 patients with curatively resected GC at Department of Gastric Cancer, Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital were retrospectively enrolled. The patients were categorized into two groups based on the LVI status: a positive group(PG;presence of LVI) and a negative group(NG;absence of LVI). The clinicopathological factors corrected with LVI and prognostic variables were analyzed. Additionally, a pathological lymphovascular-node(lvN) classification system was proposed to evaluate the superiority of its prognostic prediction of GC patients compared with that of the eighth edition of the N staging ***: Two hundred twenty-four patients(22.2%) had LVI. The depth of invasion and lymph node metastasis were independently associated with the presence of LVI. GC patients with LVI demonstrated a significantly lower overall survival(OS) rate than those without LVI(42.8% vs. 68.9%, respectively;P<0.001). In multivariate analysis,LVI was identified as an independent prognostic factor for GC patients(hazard ratio: 1.370;95% confidence interval: 1.094-1.717;P=0.006). Using strata analysis, significant prognostic differences between the groups were only observed in patients at stage I-IIIa or N0-2. The lvN classification was found to be more appropriate to predict the OS of GC patients after curative surgery than the pN staging system. The-2 log-likelihood of lvN classification(4,746.922) was smaller than the value of pN(4,765.196), and the difference was statistically significant(χ^2=18.434, P<0.001).Conclusions: The presence of LVI influences the OS of GC patients at stage Ⅰ-Ⅲ a or N0-2. LVI should be incorporated into the pN staging system to enhance the accuracy of the prognostic prediction of GC patients.
