Nature is a rich source of medicinal plants and their products that are useful for treatment of various diseases and disorders. Momordica charantia, commonly known as bitter melon or bitter gourd, is one of such plants known for its biological activities used in traditional system of medicines. This plant is cultivated in all over the world, including tropical areas of Asia, Amazon, east Africa, and the Caribbean and used as a vegetable as well as folk medicine. All parts of the plant, including the fruit, are commonly consumed and cooked with different vegetables, stir-fried, stuffed or used in small quantities in soups or beans to give a slightly bitter flavor and taste. The plant is reported to possess anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-bacterial, anti-obesity, and immunomodulatory activities. The plant extract inhibits cancer cell growth by inducing apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, autophagy and inhibiting cancer stem cells. The plant is rich in bioactive chemical constituents like cucurbitane type triterpenoids, triterpene glycosides, phenolic acids, flavonoids, essential oils, saponins, fatty acids, and proteins. Some of the isolated compounds （Kuguacin J, Karaviloside XI, Kuguaglycoside C, Momordicoside Q-U, Charantin, a-eleostearic acid） and proteins （a-Momorcharin, RNase MC2, MAP30） possess potent biological activity. In the present review, we are summarizing the anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer activities of Momordica charantia along with a short account of important chemical constituents, providing a basis for establishing detail biological activities of the plant and developing novel drug molecules based on the active chemical constituents.

Prediabetes Progression to Diabetes among Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is very high among veterans. The primary aim of this study is to compare the rate of progression of prediabetes to diabetes among veterans with or without PTSD and associated conditions and or risk factors for that. This retrospective observational database study included all subjects with prediabetes based on HbA1C (5.7 to 6.4), after exclusion criteria between 2008 and 2019 at Veterans Health Administration at Columbia, South Carolina. PTSD codes were used to identify veterans with PTSD. Subjects with prediabetes identified include 72,604 with mean age of 66 and mean HbA1C of 5.9% and 29% of them had PTSD. Follow-up data is available for 62,184 subjects. Among those who had follow-up, 35% progressed to diabetes, while 65% remained as prediabetic. Progression to diabetes negatively is correlated with HbA1C (r = 0.34;p vascular disease. The rate of progression was higher among subjects with PTSD though much younger than those without PTSD.

After dengue virus(DENV)infection,antibody-dependent enhancement(ADE)is easy to occur when the neutralizing antibody(NAb)gradually decreases to a sub-neutralizing *** this cohort surveillance,we utilized sera samples collected from dengue fever patients at different convalescent phases in Jinghong City,to investigate the dynamic change rule of DENV-specific antibodies,and to analyze the risk of ADE caused by secondary infection with heterologous serotypes *** baseline serosurvey,191 four-year and 99 six-year sera samples during convalescence were collected in 2017 and 2019,*** positive rate of DENVspecific immunoglobulin G was 98.4%in 2017,which significantly decreased to 82.8%in *** geometric mean titer(GMT)of NAb decreased from 1:155.35 to 1:*** 290 overall samples,73 paired consecutive samples were used for follow-up *** four-year sera,the GMTs of NAb against DENV-3 and cross-reactive antibodies against DENV-1,DENV-2 and DENV-4 were 1:167.70,1:13.80,1:18.54 and 1:45.26,respectively,which decreased to 1:53.18,1:10.30,1:14.60 and 1:8.17 in six-year *** age-stratified analysis,due to the increasing number of ADE positive samples from 2017 to 2019 in 31–40 and 51–60 years groups,the risk of ADE in DENV-4 infection was positively associated with the extension of convalescent phase,and the odd ratio was higher than other *** the recovery period lengthened,the risk of secondary infection with DENV-1 and DENV-2 was *** results offer essential experimental data for risk prediction of severe dengue in hyper-endemic dengue areas,and provide crucial scientific insight for the development of effective dengue vaccines.

BACKGROUND Paragonimiasis is a food-borne parasitic infection caused by lung flukes of the genus Paragonimus. Although the most common site of infection is the pleuropulmonary area, the parasite can also reach other parts of the body on its journey from the intestines to the lungs, ending up in locations such as the brain,abdomen, skin, and subcutaneous tissues. Ectopic paragonimiasis is difficult to diagnose due to the rarity of this *** SUMMARY Here, we report a rare case of simultaneous breast and pulmonary paragonimiasis in a woman presenting painless breast mass and lung nodule with a history of eating raw trout. To confirm the diagnosis, serologic testing and tissue confirmation of the breast mass were performed.
