The effects of selenium on the translation efficiency of selenoproteins Gpx1， Gpx4， and Txnrd1 in oxLDL-induced ***926 cells

Selenium is a crucial trace element that contributes to physiological processes in the body as selenoproteins. Selenoproteins serve as an integral role in the body in controlling the redox state of cells and protecting against damage induced by oxidative stress. This study aimed to investigate the effects and possible mechanism of selenium on selenoproteins expression in ***926 cells induced by oxLDL. The impact of selenium on the viability of ***926 cells was detected by the MTT method， and intracellular ROS level and mitochondrial membrane potential were assessed by fluorescent probe DCFH-DA and JC-1， respectively. RNA-seq， quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR)， and western blot were used to investigate the selenoprotein expression. Selenoprotein mRNA translation efficiency was analyzed by ribosome profiling (Ribo-Seq) coupled with transcriptomics. Our data showed that selenium supplementation (0.5 μmol/L) significantly decreased ROS production， reduced mitochondrial inner membrane potential and increased the proliferative activity of ***926 cells induced by oxLDL. Moreover， The protective effects of selenium against oxLDL-induced ***926 cell injury were associated with the upregulation of the expressions of selenoproteins GPX1， GPX4， and TXNRD1. Furthermore， the expressions of selenoproteins GPX1 and GPX4 were hierarchically controlled， but the expressions of selenoproteins TXNRD1 were mainly regulated by oxLDL. Finally， Ribo-Seq coupled with transcriptomics results demonstrated that the expressions of selenoproteins GPX1， GPX4， and TXNRD1 were regulated at the translation process level. These findings suggested that selenium could have preventive effects in oxLDL induced ***926 cell injury by regulating the selenoprotein expression， and the selenoproteins expressions at the translation level in vascular endothelial cells need further study.

Lycium barbarum Polysaccharides Promotes Mitochondrial Biogenesis and Energy Balance in NAFLD Cell Model

Relevance of Household Chemical Usage to Respiratory diseases in Older Adults in China

Objective This study investigated the association between household chemical use and respiratory disease(RD) in older Chinese *** The data were from the 2018 China Longitudinal Health and Longevity Survey(CLHLS)database, which included 12,866 participants aged ≥ 65 years. The prevalence of RD was based on selfreported medical history, and patients were divided into diseased and non-diseased groups. The frequency of household chemical usage was divided into four categories, and a total score for eight household chemical usage categories was constructed. Binary logistic regression was used to determine the relationship between the frequency of household chemical use and RD, and a restricted cubic spline was used to determine the dose-response *** After adjusting for all covariates, regular use of repellents [odds ratios(OR) = 1.28, 95% CI1.06–1.55] and oil removers(OR = 1.28, 95% CI 1.03–1.58) were associated with RD. There was a doseresponse association between the total score of household chemicals usage and RD risk(P non-linearity> 0.05, P for trend < 0.01). Using patients with the total score below 9 as a reference, the OR for patients with the total score ranging from 25 to 32 is 2.33(95% CI 1.25–4.09).Conclusion Regular use of repellents and oil removers increased the risk of RD, and the dosedependent relationship was also observed.

We assessed the prevalence of non‐ communicable diseases（NCDs） risk factors with a focus on their clustering among healthy adults in Shenzhen, China. Data from the 2011 China Health and Nutrition Survey, comprising a regionally representative sample of 806 healthy adults aged 35 years or older, were obtained to determine the prevalence of five risk factors for NCDs. The prevalence of current smoking, central obesity, impaired fasting glucose, borderline hypertension, and borderline high total cholesterol was 19.97%, 28.29%, 4.47%, 10.55%, and 36.10%, respectively. A total 63.77% of participants had at least one risk factor. Upon examination of risk factor clustering, we observed that 7.57% of participants had at least three risk factors. Using this threshold as a cutoff, clustering of risk factors was associated with sex [odds ratio（OR） = 3.336, 95% confidence interval（CI）： 1.782 to 6.246], physical activity（OR = 1.913, 95% CI： 1.009 to 3.628）, and BMI（OR = 7.376, 95% CI： 3.812 to 14.270）. The prevalence of risk factors for NCDs is fairly high among healthy adults in Shenzhen, with a clustering tendency.

Inverse relations between Helicobacter pylori infection and risk of esophageal precancerous lesions in drinkers and peanut consumption

BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) is a Gram-negative bacterium found in the upper digestive tract. Although H. pylori infection is an identified risk factor for gastric cancer, its role in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC) remains a topic of much *** To evaluate the association between H. pylori infection and the risk of precancerous lesions of ESCC, and further explore the association between dietary factors and the risk of H. pylori *** Two hundred patients with esophageal precancerous lesions(EPL) aged 63.01 ± 6.08 years and 200 healthy controls aged 62.85 ± 6.03 years were included in this case-control study. Epidemiological data and qualitative food frequency data were investigated. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay measuring serum immunoglobulin G antibodies was used to determine H. pylori seropositivity. An unconditional logistic regression model was used to assess the association between H. pylori infection and EPL risk dichotomized by gender, age, and the use of tobacco and alcohol, as well as the association between dietary factors and the risk of H. pylori *** A total of 47(23.5%) EPL cases and 58(29.0%) healthy controls had positive H. pylori infection. An inverse relation between H. pylori infection and the risk of EPL was found in the group of drinkers after adjustment for covariates [odds ratio(OR) = 0.32, 95% confidence interval(95%CI): 0.11-0.95]. Additionally, peanut intake was significantly associated with a decreased risk of H. pylori infection(OR = 0.39, 95%CI: 0.20-0.74).CONCLUSION Our study suggested that H. pylori infection may decrease the risk of EPL for drinkers in a rural adult Chinese population, and the consumption of peanut may reduce the risk of H. pylori infection. These findings should be framed as preliminary evidence, and further studies are required to address whether the mechanisms are related to the localization of lesions and alcohol consumption.

Hypertension Prevalence,Awareness,Treatment,and control and Their Associated Socioeconomic factors in China:A Spatial Analysis of A National Representative Survey

Objective We aimed to investigate and interpret the associations between socioeconomic factors and the prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension at the provincial level in *** A nationally and provincially representative sample of 179,059 adults from the China chronic disease and Nutrition Surveillance study in 2015–2016 was used to estimate hypertension burden. The spatial Durbin error model was fitted to investigate socioeconomic factors associated with hypertension *** Overall, it was estimated that 29.20% of the participants were hypertensive nationwide,among whom, 34.32% were aware of their condition, 27.69% had received antihypertensive treatment,and 7.81% had controlled their condition. Per capita gross domestic product(GDP) was associated with hypertension prevalence(coefficient:-2.95, 95% CI:-5.46,-0.45) and control(coefficient: 6.35, 95% CI:1.36, 11.34) among adjacent provinces and was also associated with awareness(coefficient: 2.93, 95%CI: 1.12, 4.74) and treatment(coefficient: 2.67, 95% CI: 1.21, 4.14) in local province. Beds of internal medicine(coefficient: 2.66, 95% CI: 1.08, 4.23) was associated with control in local province. Old dependency ratio(coefficient:-3.58, 95% CI:-5.35,-1.81) was associated with treatment among adjacent provinces and with control(coefficient:-1.69, 95% CI:-2.42,-0.96) in local *** Hypertension indicators were not only directly influenced by socioeconomic factors of local area but also indirectly affected by characteristics of geographical neighbors. Population-level strategies should involve optimizing supportive socioeconomic environment by integrating clinical care and public health services to decrease hypertension burden.

Objective To explore the association between soil selenium levels and the risk of diabetes in Chinese adults aged 35–74 *** Data for this study were derived from the China chronic diseases and Behavioral Risk factors Surveillance 2010 *** concentrations in soil were obtained from the Atlas of Soil environmental Background Values in China.A two-level binary logistic regression model was used to determine the association between soil selenium concentrations and the risk of diabetes,with participants nested within districts/*** A total of 69,332 participants aged 35–74 years,from 158 districts/counties were included in the *** of selenium in soil varied greatly across the 158 districts/counties,with a median concentration of 0.219 mg/kg(IQR:0.185–0.248).The results showed that both Quartile 1(0.119–0.185 mg/kg)and Quartile 4(0.249–0.344 mg/kg)groups were positively associated with diabetes compared to a soil selenium concentration of 0.186–0.219 mg/kg(Quartile 2),crude odds ratios(ORs)(95%CI)were 1.227(1.003–1.502)and 1.280(1.048–1.563).The P values were 0.045 and 0.013,for Quartile 1 and Quartile 4 groups,*** adjusting for all confounding factors of interest,the Quartile 1 group became non-significant,and the Quartile 4 group had an adjusted OR(95%CI)of 1.203(1.018–1.421)relative to the reference group(Quartile 2),the P values was *** significant results were seen for the Quartile 3 group(0.220–0.248 mg/kg)compared to the reference *** Excessive selenium concentrations in soil could increase the risk of diabetes among Chinese adults aged 35–74 years.
