Background:Humoral and cellular immune responses play protective roles against Mycobacterium tuberculosis(MTB)***,hookworm infection decreases the immune response to hookworm and bystander ***,immune responses to co-infection of MTB and hookworm are still unknown,although co-infection has been one of the public health problems in co-endemic areas of pulmonary tuberculosis(PTB)and hookworm ***,it is essential to evaluate B and T cell immune responses to the ***:Seventeen PTB cases co-infected with hookworm,26 PTB cases,15 patients with hookworm infection,and 24 healthy controls without PTB or hookworm infection were enrolled in the *** of CD3,CD4,CD8,CD10,CD19,CD20,CD21,CD25,CD27,CD38,FoxP3,and PD-1 were assessed on B and T cell subsets using multicolor flow ***:For the B cell(CD19+)subsets,naïve B cells(CD10−CD27−CD21+CD20+),plasma cells(CD10−CD27+CD21−CD20−),and tissue-like memory B cells(CD10−CD27−CD21−CD20+)had higher proportions,whilst resting memory B cells(CD10−CD27+CD21+CD20+)had lower proportions in the group co-infected with MTB and hookworm as compared to other *** of activated memory B cells(CD10−CD27+CD21−CD20+)did not differ among the four *** the T cell(CD3+)subsets,frequencies of regulatory T cells(CD4+CD25+Foxp3+)and exhausted CD4+and CD8+T cells(CD4+PD-1+and CD8+PD-1+)were higher,and frequencies of activated CD4+and CD8+T cells(CD4+CD38+and CD8+CD38+)were lower in the co-infected group as compared to the other ***:The change patterns of the cell profile of circulating lymphocytes were indentified in human co-infection of MTB and hookworm,which might indicate that the humoral and cellular immune responses are more suppressed.

Factors Undermining the Investigation of Child Contacts of TB Patients： The Case of FCT, Abuja, Nigeria

Facility records of 320 TB （tuberculosis） patients were examined over a one-year-period; January-December 2009 to ascertain the screening of children under 6 years of age who have had contacts with sputum smear positive TB patients as stipulated in the NTBLCP （national tuberculosis and leprosy Control program） guidelines. In addition, semi-structured questionnaires were administered to 28 DOTS （directly-observed treatment strategy） clinicians to elicit information to help explain findings from the analysis of the routine data. Over 60% of children less than 6 years of age who had contacts with TB patients were not investigated in the health facilities included in the survey. The level of educational attainment of DOTS providers was associated with the screening of TB patients＇ contacts （P = 0.008）. Forgetfulness by clinicians to ask for or screen children of TB patients in the facilities is the singular most important factor undermining contact investigation. The proportion of under 6 years TB contacts screened or not screened for TB in the facilities was similar according to the age and gender of TB patients, and the type of health facilities where treatment was accessed by patients （P = 0.325）. The study underscored the need for the state program to evaluate the quality of service provision as well as counseling provided to TB patients at the facilities.

The present study reports the in vivo anti-Mycobacterial Activity of a Phytomedicine “MATHESIA” on Mycobacterium ulcerans. It also explores the influence of ethanolamine (alkali agent) on the in vivo activity of some antibiotics (Isoniazid, Rifampicin, Ethambutol) used in the treatment of Buruli ulcers in DR Congo. Experiments were conducted on adult white Wistar rats of both sexes with the weights comprising between 110 - 165 g. AIM: To determine the treatment outcomes and predictors for unsuccessful tuberculosis(TB) outcomes in rural ***: Adult rural TB patients treated during 2011 and 2012 in two healthcare facilities(one urban public and one rural private) were identified from the TB treatment registers and retrospectively reviewed. tuberculosis treatment outcomes were assessed according to World Health Organisation guidelines. Determinants of unsuccessful treatment outcomes were identified using a multivariable logistic regression ***: Between January 2011 to December 2012, 1180 rural TB patients started treatment, of whom 494(41.9%) were female. The treatment success rate was 893(75.7%), while the rates of death, loss-tofollow-up, and treatment failure were 129(10.9%), 100(8.5%), and 18(1.5%) respectively. In the final multivariable logistic regression model, the odds of unsuccessful treatment outcome were higher among patients who received care at the urban public facility(a OR = 2.9, 95%CI: 1.9-4.4), smear-negative(1.3,1.0-1.8) and extrapulmonary(2.7, 1.3-5.6) TB patients, human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) co-infected(2.1, 1.5-3.0), and patient who received the longer(8-mo) anti-TB regimen(1.3, 1.1-1.8).CONCLUSION: Treatment success among rural TB patient in Nigeria is low. High risk groups should be targeted for closer monitoring, socio-economic support, and expansion of TB/HIV activities.
