Nucleic acid sensing is a 3 decades old but still challenging area of application for different biological sub-domains,from pathogen detection to single cell transcriptomics *** many applications of nucleic acid detection and identification are mostly carried out by PCR techniques,sequencing,and their derivatives used at large ***,these methods’limitations on speed,cost,complexity and specificity have motivated the development of innovative detection methods among which nucleic acid biosensing technologies seem *** switches are a particular class of RNA sensing devices relying on a conformational switch of secondary structure induced by the pairing of the detected trigger RNA with a de novo designed synthetic sensing mRNA *** we describe a streamlined methodology enabling the development of such a sensor for the RNA-mediated detection of an endangered plant species in a cell-free reaction *** applied this methodology to help identify the rosewood Dalbergia maritima,a highly trafficked wood,whose protection is limited by the capacity of the authorities to distinguish protected logs from other unprotected but related *** streamlined pipeline presented in this work is a versatile framework enabling cheap and rapid development of new sensors for custom RNA detection.

Packaging is one of the most important methods of keeping the quality of food products for storage, transportation and end-use. The price of materials employed for packaging food has traditionally been high and used to be more expensive than the food itself. Technological innovations made possible to produce packaging materials cheaply. One of these processes is known as co-extrusion. This technique makes a film with two or more layers with different plastics not laminating the layers together with an adhesive, eliminating the use of solvents and producing a film in just one step instead multiple steps. In this background, our paper relates to the evolution on packaging for foods by using patenting documents. A search for patent documents was performed on free patent databases using keywords and International Patent Classification (IPC) codes related to this technology. As results: (a) 17% of the 21,472 documents found are focused on multilayer packaging for food; (b) 12 countries hold more than 90% of patents (38% Japan; 23% The United States of America; 7% Canada and 6% Germany); and, (c) two peaks were perceived in the period of 1992-1994 and 2003, and matches, respectively, the Persian Gulf (1990-1991) and Iraq Wars (2003-invasion of Iraq), so the historical tendency is confirmed: "wars also generate scientific and technological innovations".

Analysis of Technological Developments in the Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease through Patent Documents

Population aging and the consequent change in the profile of the age pyramid are already a reality the world over. One undeniable effect of this aging process is the significant increase in the number of people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which is the most common form of dementia, accounting for around 50% - 60% of all cases. AD tends to affect people in their 60 s, becoming progressively more commonplace in older age groups. It is an incurable disease, and patients can live for many years taking medication on a daily basis. This study shows that research into AD is on the rise around the world because the pharmaceutical industry and research institutions are seeking new types of drugs to treat and even cure Alzheimer’s patients. By analyzing patent documents, we map out the potential future treatments for this disease, indicating the leading countries and drugs companies that have invested most in a bid to accelerate progress towards new discoveries about the disease and the development of new drugs.

Petroleum Patent Used Such Monitoring Technological Like Innovation Process of Drilling Fluids with Xanthan Gum ——World Panorama

This paper aims to discuss the importance of patenting and publishing as an instrument of incentive to technological innovation in the petroleum chemistry area. The present study has examined the publications and the patent applications published from 1974 to 2014. A technological monitoring methodology for patents in drilling fluid with xanthan gum has been compared using profiles of patent application in the world, with emphasis on industrial property Databases available on the internet (inpi-Br, Derwent, Espacenet, Patent Scope and USPTO) with intention to assess the main inventors, applications, applications’ countries, the IPC classification, years of application and category of claims as well as discuss the importance of patents as a means of encouraging technological innovation of xanthan gum. The United States and China stand out both in relation to the publication of papers as well as in the amount of patent filing in scientific publications with the theme drilling fluid with additive xanthan gum classified by the authors’ country of origin. It is observed that brazil and the US lead the ranking with 15 publications (about 23.1% of the total). Among the 72 institutions obtained as a result, both Petrobras SA and Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, in brazil, lead the world ranking, with 6 publications each;in relation to the areas of knowledge, it is observed that engineering stands out in the publication of papers and the areas of chemistry, engineering, energy fuels and polymer science are noticeable in numbers of patent applications. The analysis of patent filings in the periods proposed features a significant percentage associated with the classification C09K.

The Gender Patenting Gap: A Study on the Iberoamerican Countries

Purpose: This work presents a study on the female involvement in patent applications in all 23 Ibero-American countries that are WIPO members, in order to measure gender inequalities in institutional collaborations and technological fields, across ***/methodology/approach: The data used in this paper come from EPO Worldwide Patent Statistical Database(PATSTAT). PATSTAT contains bibliographical data relating to more than 100 million patent documents from leading industrialized and developing countries, as well as legal event data from more than 40 patent authorities contained in the EPO worldwide legal event data(INPADOC). The extracted subset is composed of 150,863 patent applications with priority years between 2007 and ***: Our observations indicate that even in more dynamic economies such as Portugal and Spain, the participation of women per patent applications does not exceed 30%. R&D Landscape for Breast Cancer through Patent Documents

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, and is estimated to be the cause of 13.1 million deaths in 2030. Breast cancer is the second cancer in the global mortality ranking, considering both sexes. Due to the burden of breast cancer worldwide, this paper aims to present an overview of the main R&D efforts focusing on breast cancer treatment. Patents were retrieved from the Derwent Innovations Index?, which has a specific code for pharmaceuticals related to breast cancer. A total of 423 patent documents filed in recent years were identified, of which 126 are exclusively for breast cancer, 169 for breast cancer and other cancers, and 128 are inventions related to the treatment of cancer and other diseases. The patent documents were classified into two large groups, the first of which had a predominance of claims for antibodies, proteins and polypeptides for use in medication production, while the second focuses on gene therapy, nucleotides and RNA. The country with the majority of priority patent applications was found to be the United States, followed by China and Japan.

Weighted interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method is developed to solve the two-dimensional non-equilibrium radiation diffusion equation on unstructured *** are three weights including the arithmetic,the harmonic,and the geometric weight in the weighted discontinuous Galerkin *** the time discretization,we treat the nonlinear diffusion coefficients explicitly,and apply the semiimplicit integration factormethod to the nonlinear ordinary differential equations arising from discontinuous Galerkin spatial *** semi-implicit integration factor method can not only avoid severe timestep limits,but also takes advantage of the local property of DG methods by which small sized nonlinear algebraic systems are solved element by element with the exact Newton iteration *** results are presented to demonstrate the validity of discontinuous Galerkin method for high nonlinear and tightly coupled radiation diffusion equation.
