Objective: The aim of this study was to characterize the polymorphisms of the DC-SIGN (-336 A/G, rs4804803) gene and their association with the immunopathogenicity of dengue fever in Burkina Faso. Methods: A total of three hundred forty-one subjects, patients of all ages have been included in the study: 208 persons presenting clinical signs of dengue fever which were confirmed by diagnostic and 133 Healthy Controls. Genotyping for the CD209 variant (-336 A/G, rs4804803) was carried out using TaqMan SNP Genotyping Assays. Haplotype frequencies were inferred and compared between the study groups. Results: The percentage of men was 61.88% (211/341) and 38.12% (130/341) for women. The highest frequency of dengue fever (77.42%) was noted in patients with age between 20 to 40 years. Around 1.52% of the study population was positive for HIV, 40.55% were carriers of HBV and 3.83% of HCV. Genotype distribution of the CD209 variant (-336 A/G, rs4804803) was in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in both patients and controls. The frequency of allele A was higher than allele G;however, statistical analyses showed that there is no significant difference in genotypes GG, AG and AA in patients and controls. Conclusion: This related no significant association with dengue for the variant of ?336 A/G in the DC-SIGN gene in an Ouagadougou population. However, our results offered the SNP frequencies in a West African population, which might be useful for the study of ethnic groups.

Effects of different plasma expanders on rats subjected to severe acute normovolemic hemodilution

Objective:To scrutinize the definitions of minimal invasive surgical therapy(MIST)and to investigate urologists’knowledge,attitudes,and practices for benign prostatic obstruction ***:A 36-item survey was developed with a Delphi *** on definitions of MIST and attitudes and practices of benign prostatic obstruction surgeries were *** were invited globally to complete the online *** was achieved when more than or equal to 70%responses were“agree or strongly agree”and less than or equal to 15%responses were“disagree or strongly disagree”(consensus agree),or when more than or equal to 70%responses were“disagree or strongly disagree”and less than or equal to 15%responses were“agree or strongly agree”(consensus disagree).Results:The top three qualities for defining MIST were minimal blood loss(n=466,80.3%),fast post-operative recovery(n=431,74.3%),and short hospital stay(n=425,73.3%).The top three surgeries that were regarded as MIST were Urolift®(n=361,62.2%),Rezum®(n=351,60.5%),and endoscopic enucleation of the prostate(EEP)(n=332,57.2%).Consensus in the knowledge section was achieved for the superiority of Urolift®,Rezum®,and iTIND®over transurethral resection of the prostate with regard to blood loss,recovery,day surgery feasibility,and post-operative *** in the attitudes section was achieved for the superiority of Urolift®,Rezum®,and iTIND®over transurethral resection of the prostate with regard to blood loss,recovery,and day surgery *** on both sections was achieved for EEP as the option with the better symptoms and flow improvement,lower retreatment rate,and better suitable for prostate more than 80 ***:Minimal blood loss,fast post-operative recovery,and short hospital stay were the most important qualities for defining ***®,Rezum®,and EEP were regarded as MIST by most urologists.

Immunologic Thrombocytopenic Purpura Associated with Helicobacter Pylori Infection: A Case Report from Senegal

We present a 27-year-old female patient received for epistaxis associated with gingivorrhagia. In her medical history, she had undergone an oesogastroduodenal fibroscopy one year earlier, which revealed a bulbar ulcer with gastritis. On admission, she presented with a bleeding syndrome, an anemic syndrome with poor hemodynamic tolerance, and epigastric sensitivity. The blood count performed in the emergency on the citrate tube showed a bicy-topenia (regenerative anemia + thrombocytopenia). The HELIKIT test was positive. Thus, the hypothesis of an acute immunological thrombocytopenic purpura associated with a Helicobacter pylori infection seemed to us the most probable with a Khellaf hemorrhagic score of 8. She had benefited from a bolus of methyl prednisone: 15 mg/kg/day for 3 days then relay per os with prednisone 1 mg/kg/day (and adjuvant treatment);the eradicating treatment of Helicobacter pylori had been simultaneously started.

Significant increase in HBV, HCV, HIV and syphilis infections among blood donors in West Bengal, Eastern India 2004-2005: Exploratory screening reveals high frequency of occult HBV infection

AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of markers of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among blood donors in Kolkata, Eastern India for two consecutive years and to conduct a pilot study to explore the presence of HBV DNA among hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) negative but anti-HBc positive blood donors. METHODS: Seroprevalence of HBsAg, anti-HCV and anti-HIV was studied among 113 051 and 106 695 voluntary blood donors screened in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Moreover, a pilot study on 1027 HBsAg negative donors was carried out for evaluating the presence of HBV DNA by PCR on HBsAg negative/anti- HBc positive donors. RESULTS: A statistically significant increase in the prevalence of HBV (1448 vs 1768, P blood donors of Kolkata West Bengal in 2005 as compared to 2004. Moreover, the exploratory study on 1027 HBsAg negative donors revealed that 188 (18.3%)of them were anti-HBc positive out of which 21% were positive for HBV DNA. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study underscore the significantly increasing endemicity of hepatitis viruses, syphilis and HIV among the voluntary blood donors of our community. The pilot study indicates a high rate of prevalence of HBV DNA among HBsAg negative/anti-HBc positive donors and thus emphasizes the need for a more sensitive and stringent screening algorithm for blood donations.

Background: Sickle cell disease is one of the most common monogenic diseases in the world, affecting approximately 70 million people, 80% in sub-Saharan Africa and 1 in 10 in Senegal. Sickle cell anemia causes functional asplenia (associated with repeated thrombosis of splenic vessels), resulting in increased susceptibility to infection. However, several studies have reported differences in the spectrum of bacterial infections in malaria-endemic areas. Therefore, we proposed to conduct a study to determine the rate of positive blood cultures and the bacteriological spectrum in sickle cell patients. Materials and Method: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study of blood culture samples from patients who received a request for hemoglobin electrophoresis as part of their treatment at the Principal’s hospital in Dakar. The study took place from January 2008 to December 2021. For each patient, we collect demographic information, including age, gender, and the service from which the analysis request originated. Data were collected in the laboratory’s computer system and entered into Microsoft Excel (2007). Statistical analyzes were performed using Epi-Info 7 software. Results: Our study included 1419 patients. The most common types of hemoglobin profiles were: normal profile (n = 1025), AS profile (n = 283), SS profile (n = 104), SC profile (n = 7). This corresponds to the proportions of 72%, 20%, 0.5% and 7.5% for the profiles Normal, AS, SC and SS. The male proportion was 61.1%, 61.5%, 57.1, respectively %, 55.8% for Normal, SA, SC, and SS profiles. A total of 19,090 individual blood culture bottles were collected from 1419 impatient patients as follows: Normal profile (n = 18,042 bottles), AS profile (n = 677 culture bottles), SS profile (n = 362 bottles). The majority of blood culture orders come from pediatric services, accounting for 70% of the total number of orders. Macrophage Phenotypes and Hepatitis B Virus Infection

Globally, hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and its related liver diseases account for 780,000 deaths every year. Outcomes of HBV infection depend on the interaction between the virus and host immune system. It is becoming increasingly apparent that Kupffer cells (KCs), the largest population of resident and monocyte-derived macrophages in the liver, contribute to HBV infection in various aspects. These cells play an important role not only in the anti-HBV immunity including virus recognition, cytokine production to directly inhibit viral replication and recruitment and activation of other immune cells involved in virus clearance but also in HBV outcome and progression, such as persistent infection and development of end-stage liver diseases. Since liver macrophages play multiple roles in HBV infection, they are directly targeted by HBV to benefit its life cycle. In the present review, we briefly outline the current advances of research of macrophages, especially the studies of their phenotypes, in chronic HBV infection.
