Spatial and temporal variations in nitrogen retention effects in a subtropical mountainous basin in Southeast China

Nitrogen retention within a watershed reduces the amount of N exported to the ocean;however, it worsens environmental problems, including surface water eutrophication, aquifer pollution, acid rain, and soil acidification. Here, we adopted the Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT) model to describe the riverine N output and retention effects in the Shanmei Reservoir Basin, a subtropical mountainous basin located in Quanzhou City, Southeast China. The results revealed that farmlands and orchards in the upstream and central parts of the basin were the dominant land use types, which contributed large N yields. Fertilizer application was the key source of riverine N output and N retention within the basin. On average, approximately 64% of anthropogenic N inputs were retained within the basin, whereas 36% of total N was exported to the downstream and coastal areas. The average N retention efficiency was 80% in a dry year, and within the year, N retention occurred in spring and summer and N release occurred in autumn and winter. The annual variation in N retention within the basin was largely dominated by changes in rainfall and runoff, whereas the seasonal characteristics of N retention were mainly affected by fertilization. Even with a large decrease in fertilizer application, owing to the contributions of the residual N pool and river background, the riverine N output still maintained a certain base value. The effects of precipitation, land use types, and agricultural fertilizer on N retention should be comprehensively considered to implement reasonable N management measures.

Agricultural non-point nitrogen pollution control function of dierent vegetation types in riparian wetlands: A case study in the Yellow River wetland in China

Riparian wetland is the major transition zone of matter, energy and information transfer between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and has important functions of water purification and non-point pollution control. Using the field experiment method and an isotope tracing technique, the agricultural non-point nitrogen pollution control function of different vegetation types in riparian wetland was studied in the Kouma Section of the Yellow River. The results showed that the retention of agricultural non-point nitrogen pollution by riparian wetland soil occurs mainly in top 0-10 cm layer. The amount of nitrogen retained by surface soils associated with three types of vegetation are 0.045 mg/g for Phragmites communis Trin Linn, 0.036 mg/g for Scirpus triqueter Linn, and 0.032 mg/g for Typha angustifolia Linn, which account for 59.21%, 56.25%, and 56.14% of the total nitrogen interception, respectively. Exogenous nitrogen in 0-10 cm soil layer changes more quickly than in other layers. One month after adding KISNO3 to the tested vegetation, nitrogen content was 77.78% for P communis Trin, 68.75% for T. angustifolia, and 8.33% for S. triqueter in the surface soil. After three months, nitrogen content was 93.33% for P. communis Trin, 72.22% for S. triqueter, and 37.50% for T. Angustifolia. There are large differences among vegetation communities respecting to purification of agricultural non-point nitrogen pollution. The nitrogen uptake amount decreases in the sequence： new shoots ofP. communis Trin （9.731 nag/g）〉 old P. communis Trin （4.939 mg/g）〉 S. triqueter （0.620 mg/g）〉 T. angustifolia （0.186 mg/g）. Observations indicated that the presence of riparian wetlands as buffers on and adjacent to stream banks could be recommended to control agricultural non-point pollution.

terrestrial input and nutrient change reflected by sediment records of the Changjiang River Estuary in recent 80 years

A variety of environmental problems have been observed in the Changjiang River Estuary and adjacent coastal area, including eutrophication, harmful algal blooms（HABs）, and hypoxia in recent decades. Application of sedimentary biogenic element indicators on the study of paleoenvironment can reconstruct environmental evolution history of waters. Two 210Pb-dated cores were collected from the Changjiang River Estuary（S3） and adjacent coastal area（Z13）, and total organic carbon（TOC）, total nitrogen（TN）, biogenic silicon（BSi）, total phosphorus（TP） and phosphorus（P） species were analyzed. Three stages of environmental changes are deduced by the nutrient sedimentary records. First, nutrient concentration increased rapidly since the 1950 s, which attributed to agriculture development and overused chemical fertilizers. Second, nutrient concentration kept high and primary production began to promote during the 1960 s to 1980 s, while diatom abundance and proportion began to decline since the 1970 s, accompanied by reduced 23 Si O- concentration and flux from the river. Third, due to several dams and bridges constructed, river runoff and coastal hydrodynamic conditions reduced to a certain extent since the 1990 s, which aggravated the unbalance in nutrient structure. Multi-nutrient proxies in sediment can reflect the natural environm-ental changes as well as influence of human activities.

High-resolution short-term prediction of the COVID-19 epidemic based on spatial-temporal model modified by historical meteorological data

In the global challenge of Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic,accurate prediction of daily new cases is crucial for epidemic prevention and socioeconomic *** contrast to traditional local,one-dimensional time-series data-based infection models,the study introduces an innovative approach by formulating the short-term prediction problem of new cases in a region as multidimensional,gridded time series for both input and prediction targets.A spatial-temporal depth prediction model for COVID-19(ConvLSTM)is presented,and further ConvLSTM by integrating historical meteorological factors(Meteor-ConvLSTM)is refined,considering the influence of meteorological factors on the propagation of *** correlation between 10 meteorological factors and the dynamic progression of COVID-19 was evaluated,employing spatial analysis techniques(spatial autocorrelation analysis,trend surface analysis,etc.)to describe the spatial and temporal characteristics of the *** the original ConvLSTM,an artificial neural network layer is introduced to learn how meteorological factors impact the infection spread,providing a 5-day forecast at a 0.01°×0.01°pixel *** results using real dataset from the 3.15 outbreak in Shanghai demonstrate the efficacy of Meteor-ConvLSTM,with reduced RMSE of 0.110 and increased R^(2) of 0.125(original ConvLSTM:RMSE=0.702,R^(2)=0.567;Meteor-ConvLSTM:RMSE=0.592,R^(2)=0.692),showcasing its utility for investigating the epidemiological characteristics,transmission dynamics,and epidemic development.

Coronavirus disease 2019(COvID-19)is a severe global public health emergency that has caused a major cri-sis in the safety of human life,health,global economy,and social ***,CovID-19 poses significant challenges to healthcare systems *** prediction and early warning of infectious diseases on a global scale are the premise and basis for countries to jointly fight ***,because of the complexity of epidemics,predicting infectious diseases on a global scale faces significant *** this study,we developed the second version of Global Prediction System for Epidemiological Pandemic(GPEP-2),which combines statis-tical methods with a modified epidemiological *** GPEP-2 introduces various parameterization schemes for both impacts of natural factors(seasonal variations in weather and environmental impacts)and human so-cial behaviors(government control and isolation,personnel gathered,indoor propagation,virus mutation,and vaccination).The GPEP-2 successfully predicted the COVID-19 pandemic in over 180 countries with an average accuracy rate of 82.7%.It also provided prediction and decision-making bases for several regional-scale CovID-19 pandemic outbreaks in China,with an average accuracy rate of 89.3%.Results showed that both anthropogenic and natural factors can affect virus spread and control measures in the early stages of an epidemic can effectively control the *** predicted results could serve as a reference for public health planning and policymaking.

Asia stands out as a priority for urgent biodiversity conservation due to its large protected areas(PAs)and threatened *** the 21st century,both the highlands and lowlands of Asia have been experiencing the dramatic human ***,the threat degree of human expansion to biodiversity is poorly ***,the threat degree of human expansion to biodiversity over 2000 to 2020 in Asia at the continental(Asia),national(48 Asian countries),and hotspot(6,502 Asian terrestrial PAs established before 2000)scales is investigated by integrating multiple large-scale *** results show that human expansion poses widespread threat to biodiversity in Asia,especially in Southeast Asia,with Malaysia,Cambodia,and Vietnam having the largest threat degrees(~1.5 to 1.7 times of the Asian average level).Human expansion in highlands induces higher threats to biodiversity than that in lowlands in one-third Asian countries(most Southeast Asian countries).The regions with threats to biodiversity are present in~75%terrestrial PAs(including 4,866 PAs in 26 countries),and human expansion in PAs triggers higher threat degrees to biodiversity than that in *** findings provide novel insight for the Sustainable Development Goal 15(SDG-15 Life on Land)and suggest that human expansion in Southeast Asian countries and PAs might hinder the realization of *** reduce the threat degree,Asian developing countries should accelerate economic transformation,and the developed countries in the world should reduce the demands for commodity trade in Southeast Asian countries(i.e.,trade leading to the loss of wildlife habitats)to alleviate human expansion,especially in PAs and highlands.

As one of the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases,China has set itself the ambitious goal of achieving carbon peaking and carbon ***,it is crucial to quantify the magnitude and trend of sources and sinks of atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO2),and to monitor China’s progress toward these *** state-of-the-art datasets and models,this study comprehensively estimated the anthropogenic CO2emissions from energy,industrial processes and product use,and waste along with natural sources and sinks of CO2for all of China during *** recognize the differences among various methods of estimating greenhouse emissions,the estimates are compared with China’s National Greenhouse Gas Inventories(NGHGIs) for 1994,2005,2010,2012,and *** CO2emissions in China have increased by 7.39 times from 1980 to 12.77 Gt CO2a-1in *** benefiting from ecological projects(e.g., Three Norths Shelter Forest System Project),the land carbon sink in China has reached 1.65 Gt CO2a-1averaged through 2010-2021,which is almost 15.81 times that of the carbon sink in the *** average,China’s terrestrial ecosystems offset 14.69%±2.49% of anthropogenic CO2emissions through *** provincial-level administrative regions of China,Xizang and Qinghai,have achieved carbon neutrality according to our estimates,but nearly half of the administrative regions of China have terrestrial carbon sink offsets of less than 10% of anthropogenic *** study indicated a high level of consistency between NGHGIs and various datasets used for estimating fossil CO2emissions,but found notable differences for land carbon *** estimates of the terrestrial carbon sinks of NGHGIs urgently need to be verified with process-based models which integrate the comprehensive carbon cycle processes.
