Background:The association between type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2dM)and the risk of esophageal cancer remains *** present study aimed to evaluate the impact of T2dM on short-term outcomes and long-term survival in patients with esophageal squamous cell cancer(ESCC).Methods:The present retrospective study included 862 patients diagnosed with ESCC between January 2001 and december *** them,280 patients had T2dM.A 1:1 propensity score-matched cohort consisting of 280 patients with and 280 without T2dM was selected from the 862 *** associations between T2dM and clinico-pathologic characteristics were assessed using theχ2 or Fisher’s exact *** of ESCC patients with and without T2dM was calculated by using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared by using the Cox regression model between the two ***:The occurrence rate of anastomotic leakage was significantly higher in patients with T2dM than in those without T2dM(Proup with weight loss rate≤5.05%,ESCC patients with T2dM had a signifi-cant longer overall survival than did those without T2dM(P=0.003),whereas in the subgroup with weight loss rate>5.05%,the patients without T2dM showed a longer survival(P=0.001).Univariate and multivariate analysis results showed that T2dM was not an independent prognostic factor for patient ***:Type 2 diabetes mellitus is not an independent prognostic factor in patients with ***,the combination of T2dM with severe weight loss would be a predictor of poor prognosis.

Characteristics of the pollutant emissions in a tunnel of Shanghai on a weekday

Tunnel displays a typical semi-closed environment, and multitudes of the pollutants tend to accumulate. The samples of gaseous pollutants and particulate matter （PM） were collected from the Xiangyin tunnel at Shanghai to investigate the characteristics of the pollutant emissions. The results indicated that both gaseous pollutants and PM exhibited much higher concentrations during the rush hours in the morning and at night due to vehicle emission. Two peaks of the PM concentration were observed in the scope of 0.7-1.1 and 3.3-4.7 μm, accounting for 14.6% and 20.3% of the total concentrations, respectively. Organic matter （OM）, EC, and many water-soluble ions were markedly higher at the rush hours in the morning than those at night, implicating comprehensive effects of vehicle types and traffic volume. The particle number concentrations exhibited two peaks at Aitken mode （25 nm and 100 rim） and accumulation mode （600 nm）, while the particle volume concentration displayed high values at the accumulation mode （100-500 nm） and coarse mode （2.5-4.0 μm）. The peak around 100 nm was detected in the morning rush hours, but it diminished with the decrease of the traffic volume. Individual-particle analysis revealed that main particles in the tunnel were Fe-rich particles, K-rich particles, mineral particles, Ca-S rich particles and A1-Si particles. The particles collected at the rush hours displayed marked different morphologies, element concentrations and particle sizes compared to the ones collected at the non-rush period. The data presented herein could shed a light on the feature of vehicle emissions.

Mass and Volume Conservation in Phase Field models for Binary Fluids

The commonly used incompressible phase field models for non-reactive,binary fluids,in which the Cahn-Hilliard equation is used for the transport of phase variables(volume fractions),conserve the total volume of each phase as well as the material volume,but do not conserve the mass of the fluid mixture when densities of two components are *** this paper,we formulate the phase field theory for mixtures of two incompressible fluids,consistent with the quasi-compressible theory[28],to ensure conservation of mass and momentum for the fluid mixture in addition to conservation of volume for each fluid *** this formulation,the mass-average velocity is no longer divergence-free(solenoidal)when densities of two components in the mixture are not equal,making it a compressible model subject to an internal *** one formulation of the compressible models with internal constraints(model 2),energy dissipation can be clearly *** efficient numerical method is then devised to enforce this compressible internal *** simulations in confined geometries for both compressible and the incompressible models are carried out using spatially high order spectral methods to contrast the model *** comparisons show that(a)predictions by the two models agree qualitatively in the situation where the interfacial mixing layer is thin;and(b)predictions differ significantly in binary fluid mixtures undergoing mixing with a large mixing *** numerical study delineates the limitation of the commonly used incompressible phase field model using volume fractions and thereby cautions its predictive value in simulating well-mixed binary fluids.

A general analysis of Wtb anomalous couplings

We investigate new physics effects on the Wtb effective couplings in a model-independent framework. The new physics effects can be parametrized by four independent couplings, f1^L, f1^r, f2^L and f2^r. We further introduce a set of parameters x0, xm, xp and x5 which exhibit a linear relation to the single top production cross sections. Using recent data for the t-channel single top production cross section at, tW associated production cross section crtw, s-channel single top production cross section δs, and W-helicity fractions F0, FL and Fr collected at the 8 TeV LHC and Tevatron, we perform a global fit to impose constraints on the top quark effective couplings. Our globM fitting results show that the top quark effective couplings are strongly correlated. We show that （i） improving the measurements of δt and δtw is important in constraining the correlation of （f1^r, f2^r） and （f2^L,f2^r）; （ii） f1^L and f2^r are anti-correlated, and are sensitive to all the four experiments; （iii） f1^r and f2^L are also anti-correlated, and are sensitive to the F0 and FL measurements; （iv） the correlation between f2^L and f2^r is sensitive to the precision of the δt, δtw and F0 measurements. The effective Wtb couplings are studied in three kinds of new physics models： the G（221） = SU（2）1 SU（2）2 U（1）x models, the vector-like quark models and the Littlest Higgs model with and without T-parity. We show that the Wtb couplings in the left-right model and the un-unified model are sensitive to the ratio of gauge couplings when the new heavy gauge boson＇s mass （Mw,） is less than several hundred GeV, but the constraint is loose if Mw^t 〉 1 TeV. Fhrthermore, the Wtb couplings in vector-like quark models and the Littlest Higgs models are sensitive to the mixing angles of new heavy particles and SM particles.

Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PdAC) is a disease of the elderly mostly because its development from preneoplastic lesions depends on the accumulation of gene mutations and epigenetic alterations over time. How aging of non-cancerous tissues of the host affects tumor progression, however, remains largely unknown. Methods: We took advantage of a model of accelerated aging, uncoupling protein 2-deficient( Ucp2 knockout, Ucp2 KO) mice, to investigate the growth of orthotopically transplanted Ucp2 wild-type(WT) PdAC cells(cell lines Panc02 and 6606PdA) in vivo and to study strain-dependent differences of the PdAC microenvironment. results: Measurements of tumor weights and quantification of proliferating cells indicated a significant growth advantage of Panc02 and 6606PdA cells in WT mice compared to Ucp2 KO mice. In tumors in the knockout strain, higher levels of interferon-γ m rNA despite similar numbers of tumor-infiltrating T cells were observed. 6606PdA cells triggered a stronger stromal reaction in Ucp2 KO mice than in WT animals. Accordingly, pancreatic stellate cells from Ucp2 KO mice proliferated at a higher rate than cells of the WT strain when they were incubated with conditioned media from PdAC cells. Conclusions: Ucp2 modulates PdAC microenvironment in a way that favors tumor progression and implicates an altered stromal response as one of the underlying mechanisms.

3d numerical simulation on fluid-structure interaction of structure subjected to underwater explosion with cavitation

In the underwater-shock environment, cavitation occurs near the structural surface. The dynamic response of fluid-structure interactions is influenced seriously by the cavitation effects. It is also the difficulty in the field of underwater explosion. With the traditional boundary element method and the finite element method （FEM）, it is difficult to solve the nonlinear problem with cavitation effects subjected to the underwater explosion. To solve this problem, under the consideration of the cavitation effects and fluid compressibility, with fluid viscidity being neglected, a 3d numerical model of transient nonlinear fluid-structure interaction subjected to the underwater explosion is built. The fluid spectral element method （SEM） and the FEM are adopted to solve this model. After comparison with the FEM, it is shown that the SEM is more precise than the FEM, and the SEM results are in good coincidence with benchmark results and experiment results. Based on this, combined with ABAQUS, the transient fluid-structure interaction mechanism of the 3d submerged spherical shell and ship stiffened plates subjected to the underwater explosion is discussed, and the cavitation region and its influence on the structural dynamic responses are presented. The paper aims at providing references for relevant research on transient fluid-structure interaction of ship structures subjected to the underwater explosion.

There exists a great need for the development of high performance alloys due to increasing demands for energy conservation and environmental protection. Application of strip casting shows a strong potential for the improvement of properties of existing alloys and also for the development of novel alloy systems with superior properties. The present paper reviews our center's activities in the development of high performance alloys by strip casting. Examples include (1) Al alloys, (2) wrought Mg alloys, and (3) bulk metallic glass (BMG) alloys.

Ex-vivo evaluation of gene therapy vectors in human pancreatic (cancer) tissue slices

AIM： To culture human pancreatic tissue obtained from small resection specimens as a pre-clinical model for examining virus-host interactions. METHOdS： Human pancreatic tissue samples （malignant and normal） were obtained from surgical specimens and processed immediately to tissue slices. Tissue slices were cultured ex vivo for 1-6 d in an incubator using 95% 02. Slices were subsequently analyzed for viability and morphology. In addition the slices were incubated with different viral vectors expressing the reporter genes GFP or dsred. Expression of these reporter genes was measured at 72 h after infection.rESULTS： With the Krumdieck tissue slicer, uniform slices could be generated from pancreatic tissue but only upon embedding the tissue in 3% low melting agarose. Immunohistological examination showed the presence of all pancreatic cell types. Pancreatic normal and cancer tissue slices could be cultured for up to 6 d, while retaining viability and a moderate to good morphology. reporter gene expression indicated that the slices could be infected and transduced efficiently by adenoviral vectors and by adeno associated viral vectors, whereas transduction with lentiviral vectors was limited. For the adenoviral vector, the transduction seemed limited to the peripheral layers of the explants. CONCLUSION： The presented system allows reproducible processing of minimal amounts of pancreatic tissue into slices uniform in size, suitable for pre-clinical evaluation of gene therapy vectors.
