Measurement of serum zinc improves prostate cancer detection efficiency in patients with PSA levels between 4 ng/mL and 10 ng/mL

Aim： To investigate whether the measurement of serum zinc may improve the detection of prostate cancer （PCa） in men who had total prostate-specific antigen （PSA） levels higher than 4.1 ng/mL. Methods： A mass screening for PCa of 3940 men over 50 years old was undertaken using total serum PSA. Of the 190 men （4.8 %） with elevated PSA, 143 （3.6 %） underwent a transrectal ultrasonography （TRUS）-guided biopsy of the prostate, and 42 men （1% of total and 29.3 % of men undergoing biopsy） were found to have cancer. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves （ROC-AUC） were used to compare the diagnostic power of cancer detection by means of serum zinc, and free PSA/total PSA ratio （fit）. Results： The men with levels of serum zinc that ranged from 40 ng/mL-60 ng/mL, had an age-adjusted odds ratios（OR） of 5.0. A cutoff value of 100 gg/mL for-serum zinc concentration provided a sensitivity of 90.5 % and a specificity of 32.7 % in elevated PSA range, and a sensitivity of 93.3 % and specificity of 27.1% in gray zone, respectively. In the gray zone ranges of 4.1 ng/mL-10.0 ng/mL, the ROC-AUC for zinc was 73.0 % higher than 62.7 % of f/t PSA ratio and 56.7 % of total PSA. Conclusion： PCa displays a lower serum zinc concentration. The measurement of zinc levels improves PCa detection in the gray zone compared with the f/t PSA ratio and total PSA. （Asian J Androl 2005 Sep; 7： 323-328）

Response of Tomato Plants to a New Application Method of Polyolefin-Coated Fertilizer

The response of tomato （Lycopersicon esculentum） plants basically fertilized with 0.3 g N per plant of compound fertilizer with a N：P2O5：K2O ratio of 20：10：20 to sticks of polyolefin-coated fertilizer （POCF）（LongT0 with a N：P2Os：K2O ratio of 14：12：14） applied 23 d after transplanting was investigated using rooting boxes in the greenhouse. The results at 26 and 40 d after stick fertilizer treatment showed that the use of the stick fertilizer greatly increased the production of many new fine roots from the tomato plants. Compared to the unfertilized control, root length and root length density in the stick fertilizer treatment increased by 3.6-6.7 fold. In the soil zones near the stick fertilizer, root weight and root mass density were also significantly higher for the stick fertilizer treatment. Additionally, the use of the stick fertilizer increased the N, P and K concentrations in the leaves and stems of the tomato plants. The new fine roots growing near the stick fertilizer not only absorbed more nutrients and translocated them to the shoots, but also contained more nutrients within themselves. The soil ammonium and nitrate N data showed that N released from the stick fertilizer played a major role in inducing the production of new fine roots. These results indicated that stick fertilizer could be used as an alternative to the co-situs application technique to change and control the root distribution of crops as well as to increase the potential capacity of roots for water and nutrient absorption.

The incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma(EAC) has risen sharply in western countries over the past 4 decades. This type of cancer is considered to follow a transitional process that goes from gastro-esophageal reflux disease(GERD) to Barrett's esophagus(BE,a metaplastic condition of the distal esophagus), a precursor lesion and ultimately adenocarcinoma. This spectrum of GERD is strongly predominant in males due to an unidentified mechanism. Several epidemiologic studies have des cribed that the prevalence of GERD, BE and EAC in women is closely related to reproductive status, which suggests a possible association with the estrogen level. Recently, we revealed in an in vivo study that the inactivation of mast cells by the anti-inflammatory function of estrogen may account for the gender difference in the GERD spectrum. Other studies have described the contribution of female steroid hormones to the gender difference in these diseases. Estrogen is reported to modulate the metabolism of fat, and obesity is a main risk factor of GERDs. Moreover, estrogen could confer esophageal epithelial resistance to causative refluxate. These functions of estrogen might explain the approximately 20-year delay in the incidence of BE and the subsequent development of EAC in women compared to men, and this effect may be responsible for the male predominance. However, some observational studies demonstrated that hormone replacement therapy exerts controversial effects in GERD patients. Nevertheless, the estrogen-related endocrine milieu may prevent disease progression toward carcinogenesis in GERD patients. The development of innovative alternatives to conventional acid suppressors may become possible by clarifying the mechanisms of estrogen.

AIM： To investigate the selective cytotoxic effect of constructed hybrid protein on cells expressing granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor （GM-CSF） receptor. METHODS： HepG2 （human hepatoma） and LS174T （colon carcinoma） were used in this study. The fused gene was induced with 0.02% of arabinose for 4 h and the expressed protein was detected by Western blotting. The chimeric protein expressed in E..coli was checked for its cytotoxic activity on these cells and apoptosis was measured by comet assay and nudear staining. RESULTS： The chimeric protein was found to be cytotoxic to the colon cancer cell line expressing GM-CSFRs, but not to HepG2 lacking these receptors. Maximum activity was observed at the concentration of 40 ng/mL after 24 h incubation. The IC50 was 20 ± 3.5 ng/mL. CONCLUSION： Selective cytotoxic effect of the hybrid protein on the colon cancer cell line expressing GMCSF receptors （GM-CSFRs） receptor and apoptosis can be observed in this cell line. The hybrid protein can be considered as a therapeutic agent.

Background and Aims: Mesocentrotus nudus is commercially harvested from shallow rocky bottoms in northern Japan. The gonads are targeted as an edible product. The objective of this study was to identify odor-active volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the gonads of adult M. nudus collected at a fishing ground in miyagi prefecture, Tohoku, Japan. Methods and Results: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis and gas chromatography-sniffing techniques identified 42 compounds categorized as alcohols, aldehydes, aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, halomethanes, hydrocarbons, ketones, sulfur-containing compounds, and nitrogen-containing compounds. GC-sniffing analysis characterized four compounds with preferable odors of sea urchin gonads;limonene, propyl acetate, acetone, dibromochloromethane. On the other hand, the analysis characterized three compounds with unpreferable odors;methyl mercaptane, dimethyl sulfide, and s-methyl thioacetate. Several VOCs from the gonads were derived from seaweeds, terrestrial plants, and fish flesh as food because M. nudus is omnivorous. Conclusion: This is the first study to identify VOCs from edible sea urchin gonads in the wild in Japan. These VOC data comprise a typical standard in order to evaluate a higher quality of sea urchin gonads.

Modern society is called the stress society, there has been a growing interest in comfortable living space. Therefore, a lot of studies using biological information have been done to quantitatively assess the effects on the human body in recent years. This study verified quantitatively difference between healing effect and stress reduction effect of sea space and general street space using an inexpensive EEG (Electroencephalogram) machine. The purpose of this study is to verify quantitatively healing effect and stress reduction effect of sea space using the EEG measurement from the psychological analysis by questionnaire survey and the SD (Semantic Differential) method. As a result, EEG and questionnaire results, psychological analysis results can be seen to match, and the effectiveness of the EEG measurement was confirmed.

This study revisits the concept of resilience by critically reviewing the contents of previous literature. Furthermore, it explains a new methodology for measuring resilience based on the theory of springs and qualitatively appraises the resiliency of Minamisanriku town as a case study. Minamisanriku is a tiny coastal town located in the northeastern part of the miyagi prefecture, Japan. The town was affected by an earthquake on March 11, 2011, with a magnitude of 9.0, followed by a tsunami. According to the authors’ previously proposed conceptual framework, resilience should be considered by dividing it into three components: onsite capacity, instantaneous survivability, and the recovery potentiality of an area. Each component of the framework depends on two or three factors that can be measured using different indicators and sub-indicators. Onsite capacity is the ability of a given place to withstand a tsunami before it arrives, and it has been considered indispensable for the prevention of a tsunami. Instantaneous survivability is the power to be alive at the point of a disaster climax. Returning speed to its normal daily routines once a catastrophe is over is called recovery potentiality. It is understood that strengthening onsite capacity by moving residences to higher ground, building seawalls and paved roads, relocation of fishing industry infrastructure, and land elevation in Minamisanriku town makes it a benchmark for resilient cities.

The small-current grounding fault in distribution network is hard to be located because of its weak fault *** accurately locate the faults,the transient process is analyzed in this *** the study we take that the main resonant frequency and its corresponding component is related to the fault *** on this,a fault location method based on double-end wavelet energy ratio at the scale corresponding to the main resonant frequency is *** back propagation neural network(BPNN)is selected to fit the non-linear relationship between the wavelet energy ratio and fault *** performance of this proposed method has been verified in different scenarios of a simulation model in PSCAD/EMTDC.
