Phytoremediation:A Green Technology to Remove Environmental Pollutants

Land, surface waters, and ground water worldwide, are increasingly affected by contaminations from industrial, research experiments, military, and agricultural activities either due to ignorance, lack of vision, carelessness, or high cost of waste disposal and treatment. The rapid build-up of toxic pollutants (metals, radionuclide, and organic contaminants in soil, surface water, and ground water) not only affects natural resources, but also causes major strains on ecosystems. Interest in phytoremediation as a method to solve environmental contamination has been growing rapidly in recent years. This green technology that involved “tolerant plants” has been utilized to clean up soil and ground water from heavy metals and other toxic organic compounds. Phytoremediation involves growing plants in a contaminated matrix to remove environmental contaminants by facilitating sequestration and/or degradation (detoxification) of the pollutants. Plants are unique organisms equipped with remarkable metabolic and absorption capabilities, as well as transport systems that can take up nutrients or contaminants selectively from the growth matrix, soil or water. As extensive as these benefits are, the costs of using plants along with other concerns like climatic restrictions that may limit growing of plants and slow speed in comparison with conventional methods (i.e., physical and chemical treatment) for bioremediation must be considered carefully. While the benefits of using phytoremediation to restore balance to a stressed environment seem to far outweigh the cost, the largest barrier to the advancement of phytoremediation could be the public opposition. The long-term implication of green plant technology in removing or sequestering environmental contaminations must be addressed thoroughly. As with all new technology, it is important to proceed with caution.

Based on the monitoring data of precipitation and runoff series from 1953 to 2013 and groundwater exploitation from 1977 to 2013 in Jinghui Irrigation Area,especially the evolution of water resources during the growth period of main crops,the trend test of precipitation and runoff series was carried out by using Spearman rank correlation test and R/S *** results showed that the annual mean precipitation and runoff and the growth period of main crops showed a downward trend,and the changes in the future were similar to those in the past;the amount of groundwater exploitation has not changed much,which is about 150 million m^*** research results can provide scientific basis for efficient utilization and reasonable allocation of water resources in irrigation area,and provide technical support for the development of modern agriculture.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of the urban sprawl in a typical urban agglomeration： a case study on Southern Jiangsu, China （1983-2007）

China has experienced urbanization at an unprecedented rate over the past decades. Against this background, this paper demonstrates the multi-level spatiotemporal urban sprawl process from 1983 to 2007 on the perspective of urban agglomeration with a case study in Southern Jiangsu. Based on a combination of eight rounds of satellite images from 1983 to 2007, the presented results suggest the following three main findings：（1） At the prefecture-city level, the urban sprawl in Southern Jiangsu has presented significantly divergent growth patterns, with more than half of this vast growth occurring in the Suzhou prefecture-level city. （2） At the county level, clear spatial differentiations exist in the direction of the urban sprawl. The centroids of all county seats in the Suzhou and Wuxi prefecture-level cities have an eastward tendency （Shanghai oriented）, while those of the county seats in the Changzhou prefecture-level city tend to be westward （Nanjing oriented）. （3） At the township level, two convergent groups have gradually formed over time; namely, the low density urban zone in the western hilly land and the high density urban zone around the three central downtown areas. The urban areas close to urban cores tend to merge, showing a high-density convergent growth pattern, as do the western and southwestern townships in Southern Jiangsu, showing a low-density convergent growth pattern. All of these findings may be valuable for researchers and local authorities in providing reference for regional coordinated growth, environmental management, and urban planning decision-making.

Atmospheric pollution of agriculture-oriented cities in Northeast China: A case in Suihua

Agriculture-oriented cities in Northeastern China have experienced frequent atmospheric pollution *** understandings of the pollution characteristics,haze causes and effects of management on local air quality are crucial for conducting integrated management approaches for the sustainable development of agriculture-oriented *** a typical agriculture-dominant city(i.e.,Suihua)in Northeast China,we analyzed in detail the characteristics and causes of atmospheric pollution and evaluated the straw-burning prohibition using multisource *** results showed a clear temporal pattern of air quality index(AQI)on an annual scale(i.e.,2015-April 2019),with two typical pollution periods occurring in late autumn and early *** large areas of concentrated straw burning at local and regional scales accounted for the first period(i.e.,October and November),while dust emissions and farming disturbances comprised the second *** interannual variation in pollution periods among these years was large,showing similar trends from 2015 to 2017 and the postponed late-autumn pollution period in *** evaluation has shown that the prohibition effect of straw burning significantly improved air quality in 2018,with a reduction of 59%±88%in the PM2.5 concentrations in October and November compared to 2015–***,From October to April of the following year,the improvement effect was not significant due to postponement of straw burning to February or *** analysis also highlighted the roles of meteorological conditions,Therefore,combined with the promotion of straw utilization,scientifically prescribed burning considering the burning amount and location,meteorological conditions and regional transportation should be implemented.

A semi-Markov model for post-earthquake emergency response in a smart city

An earthquake significant on the Richter scale occurring in an area with a high population density requires an effective and equitable emergency response plan. Emergency resources are usually located in so-called responding centers. One of the first problems faced by disaster-response management personnel in the rapidly degrading post-earthquake conditions is to gage the hazard rate to which the disaster-affected area is subjected, estimate the time taken to bring the situation under control, also called restoration time, and select the appropriate responding center for relief-and-rescue activities. In this paper, we propose an elaborate semi-Markov model to capture the stochastic dynamics of the events that follow an earthquake, which will be used to quantify the hazard rate to which people are exposed and estimate the restoration time. The model will be further used, via dynamic programming, to determine the appropriate responding center. Our proposed model can be employed in conjunction with a variety of hazard scales and by collecting data on a few parameters related to emergency management. The model will be particularly useful in a smart city, where historic data on events following an earthquake would be systematically and accurately recorded.

With the increased frequency of natural hazards and disasters and consequent losses,it is imperative to develop efficient and timely strategies for emergency response and relief *** this paper,we propose a cyberGIS-enabled multi-criteria spatial decision support system for supporting rapid decision making during emergency *** combines a high-performance computing environment(cyberGIS-Jupyter)and multi-criteria decision analysis models(Weighted Sum Model(WSM)and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution Model(TOPSIS))with various types of social vulnerability indicators to solve decision problems that contain conflicting evaluation criteria in a flood emergency *** media data(*** data)was used as an additional tool to support the decision-making *** case study involves two decision goals generated based on a past flood event in the city of Austin,Texas,*** our result shows,WSM produces more diverse values and higher output category estimations than the TOPSIS ***,the model was validated using an innovative *** cyberGIS-enabled spatial decision support system allows collaborative problem solving and efficient knowledge transformation between decision makers,where different emergency responders can formulate their decision objectives,select relevant evaluation criteria,and perform interactive weighting and sensitivity analyses.

Urbanization affects vegetation within city administrative boundary and nearby rural *** primary production(GPP)of vegetation in global urban areas is one of important metrics for assessing the impacts of urbanization on terrestrial *** date,very limited data and information on the spatial-temporal dynamics of GPP in the global urban areas are *** this study,we reported the spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of annual GPP during 2000–2016 from 8,182 gridcells(0.5°by 0.5°latitude and longitude)that have various proportion of urban *** 79.3%of these urban gridcells had increasing trends of annual GPP during *** urban area proportion(%)within individual urban gridcells increased,the means of annual GPP trends also *** results suggested that for those urban gridcells,the negative effect of urban expansion(often measured by impervious surfaces)on GPP was to large degree compensated by increased vegetation within the gridcells,mostly driven by urban management and local climate and *** findings on the continued increases of annual GPP in most of urban gridcells shed new insight on the importance of urban areas on terrestrial carbon cycle and the potential of urban management and local climate and environment on improving vegetation in urban areas.
