BACKGROUND： Neonatal cerebral palsy is mainly caused by prenatal factors. At present, an animal model of prenatal infection and early postnatal hypoxia does not exist. OBJECTIVE： To observe morphology and motor performance following prenatal infection and hypoxic insult-induced brain damage of neonatal rats to verify the feasibility to establish a model of cerebral palsy. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A randomized, controlled, animal experiment was performed at the Laboratories of xinjiang Center for Disease Control and Prevention from September 2007 to June 2008. MATERIALS： The hypoxic incubator was purchased from Shanghai Pediatric Medical Institute, China. Lipopolysaccharide （LPS, Escherichia coil, 055： B5） was purchased from Sigma-Aldrich （St. Louis, MO, USA）. METHODS： A total of 27 Wistar rats, aged 7 days, were randomly assigned to sham-surgery group （n = 15） with no carotid artery incision or hypoxia treatment, hypoxia/ischemia （H/I） group （n = 12） undergoing ligature of the right common carotid artery followed by exposure to hypoxia at postnatal day 7 （P7）, and LPS/H group （n = 19）, in which pregnant rats were exposed in utero to LPS followed by prenatal hypoxia at embryonic day 16. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Behavior, compound muscle action potential, and pathological changes were observed in 28-day-old rats. RESULTS： The footprint repeat space showed that left limb footprint repeatability in the H/I and LPS/H groups was lower than in the sham-surgery group （P 〈 0.05）. The space between the footprints was larger and unstable. Hind limb quadricep compound muscle action potential in the H/I and LPS/H groups showed lower wave amplitude compared with the sham-surgery group （P〈 0.05） Hematoxylin and eosin staining showed irregular cells around the ventricle, as well as periventricular leukomalacia. Reconstruction of hydrological changes based on tree-ring data of the Haba River, northwestern China

Reconstructing the hydrological change based on dendrohydrological data has important implications for understanding the dynamic distribution and evolution pattern of a given river. The widespread, long-living coniferous forests on the Altay Mountains provide a good example for carrying out the dendrohydrological studies. In this study, a regional composite tree-ring width chronology developed by Lariat sibirica Ledeb. and Picea obovata Ledeb. was used to reconstruct a 301-year annual （from preceding July to succeeding June） streamflow for the Haba River, which originates in the southern Altay Mountains, xinjiang, China. Results indicated that the reconstructed streamflow series and the observations were fitting well, and explained 47.5% of the variation in the observed streamflow of 1957-2008. Moreover, floods and droughts in 1949-2000 were precisely captured by the streamflow reconstruction. Based on the frequencies of the wettest/driest years and decades, we identified the 19th century as the century with the largest occurrence of hydrological fluctuations for the last 300 years. After applying a 21-year moving average, we found five wet （1724-1758, 1780-1810, 1822-1853, 1931-1967, and 1986-2004） and four dry （1759-1779, 1811-1821, 1854-1930, and 1968-1985） periods in the streamflow reconstruction. Furthermore, four periods （1770-1796, 1816-1836, 1884-1949, and 1973-1997） identified by the streamflow series had an obvious increasing trend. The increasing trend of streamflow since the 1970s was the biggest in the last 300 years and coincided with the recent warming-wetting trend in northwestern China. A significant correlation between streamflow and precipitation in the Altay Mountains indicated that the streamflow reconstruction contained not only local, but also broad-scale, hydro-climatic signals. BACKGROUND Bowen’s disease (BD) is a persistent, progressive intraepidermal carcinoma. BD usually occurs in areas exposed to sunlight. Involvement of the dorsum of the hand is not rare, but that of the palmar aspect is very unusual. Only a few cases have been reported in the literature. CASE SUMMARY Here, we report the case of a 48-year-old male patient who presented with a history of persistent local erythema lasting for 2 years on the thenar eminence of the left palm. Initially diagnosed as hand eczema, the condition did not improve with intermittent treatment with anti-allergy medications or topical glucocorticoid ointments, among other approaches. Then, the area of erythema gradually enlarged and was accompanied by mild itching. For a definite diagnosis and treatment, the patient came to our hospital. Dermoscopic examination revealed BD, and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. We performed partial resection of the skin lesion followed by photodynamic therapy. No recurrence was observed at the 6-mo follow-up. CONCLUSION For all atypical palmar lesions, early dermoscopy and/or skin biopsy are needed to avoid missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis.

We sought to investigate the correlation between the -455G/A and -148C/T polymorphisms of the β-fibrinogen gene and plasma fibrinogen levels in patients with cerebral infarction and in healthy subjects among the xinjiang uygur and Han Chinese populations, by using polymerase chain reaction-restriction enzyme digestion analysis. Results showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the distributions of the -455G/A genotype and allele frequency between the uygurs and the Han. Plasma fibrinogen levels in cerebral infarction patients among the uygurs and the Han were higher than those among healthy subjects. In particular, the frequencies of the -455G/A AA and -148C/T TT genotypes were significantly higher than in healthy subjects. Individuals carrying the A or T allele had a higher incidence of cerebral infarction compared with those carrying the G or C allele. Our experimental findings indicate that the -148C/T and -455G/A polymorphisms are associated with cerebral infarction in xinjiang uygur and Han Chinese subjects. The susceptibility- conferring alleles are -148T and -455A, and the susceptibility-conferring genotype is -455G/A ＋ AA.

High dose methylprednisolone intravenous injections are effective in treating acute spinal cord injury but can have severe side effects. In this study, we investigated intrathecal delivery of methylprednisolone for the treatment of spinal cord injury. In particular, we examined the effects of varying doses of methylprednisolone intrathecal injections on neuronal apoptosis induced by secondary damage. The results demonstrate that intrathecal injections inhibit the expression of interleukin-lβ, significantly lower expression of caspase-3, and reduce the number of apoptotic neurons, High dose methylprednisolone （0.75 mg/μL） was much more effective at reducing neuronal apoptosis than low dose methvlprednisolone （0.01 ma/μL.
