Evaluation of visual stress symptoms in age-matched dyslexic, Meares-Irlen syndrome and normal adults

AIM： To examine the prevalence of dyslexia and Meares-Irlen syndrome（MIS） among female students and determine their level of visual stress in comparison with normal subjects.·METHODS： A random sample of 450 female medical students of King Saud University Riyadh（age range, 18-30y） responded to a wide range of questions designed to accomplish the aims of this study. The detailed questionnaire consisted of 54 questions with 12 questions enquiring on ocular history and demography of participants while 42 questions were on visual symptoms. Items were categorized into critical and non-critical questions（CQ and NCQ） and were rated on four point Likert scale. Based on the responses obtained, the subjects were grouped into normal（control）, dyslexic with or without MIS（Group 1） and subjects with MIS only（Group 2）. Responses were analysed as averages and mean scores were calculated and compared between groups using one way analysis of variance to evaluate total visual stress score（TVSS =NCQ ＋CQ）, critical and non-critical visual stress scores. The relationship between categorical variables such as age, handedness and condition were assessed with Chi-square test.·RESULTS： The completion rate was 97.6% and majority of the respondents（92%） were normal readers, 2%dyslexic and 6% had MIS. They were age-matched. More than half of the participants had visited an eye care practitioner in the last 2y. About 13% were recommendedeye exercises and one participant experienced pattern glare. Hand preference was not associated with any condition but Group 1 subjects（3/9, 33%） were significantly more likely to be diagnosed of lazy eye than Group 2（2/27, 7%） and control（27/414, 7%） subjects. The mean±SD of TVSS responses were 63±14 and it was 44±9for CQ and 19 ±5 for NCQ. Designation of a new genus Bathymenes for the deep-sea pontoniine shrimps of the 'Periclimenes alcocki species group'(Decapoda,Caridea,Palaemonidae),with a checklist of the species assigned to the genus

A new genus of the deep-sea pontoniine shrimps,Bathymenes gen. nov.,is established for the 'Periclimenes alcocki species group' of the genus Periclimenes Costa,1844. The new genus is distinguished from other genera of the Pontoniinae by a combination of characters: the posteriormost dorsal rostral tooth remote from other teeth,situated in the epigastric position,cornea usually reduced,the propodus of second pereiopods covered with fine granules,the dactylus of the major second chela being generally flanged,the ambulatory pereiopods with the dactyli being biunguiculate and telson with more than two pairs of dorsolateral spines. The genus is mainly distributed in the tropical to warm-temperate Indo-West Pacific waters at depths greater than 200 m. Fifteen species previously recognized as belonging to the 'P.a lcocki species group' are now placed in Bathymenes gen. nov. A key for their identification and a checklist of congeneric species are provided.

Update on nutritional status,body composition and growth in paediatric inflammatory bowel disease

Growth and nutritional status are important issues in paediatric inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).While linear growth is easy to assess,nutritional status is more complicated,with reports often compromised by the use of simple measures,such as weight and the body mass index,to assess nutritional status rather than more appropriate and sophisticated techniques to measure body *** review is an update on what is currently known about nutritional status as determined by body composition in paediatric ***,this review will focus on the impact of biologics on growth in paediatric *** lean mass deficits have been reported in children with IBD compared with controls,and there is evidence these deficits persist over ***,data imply that gender differences exist in body composition,both at diagnosis and in response to *** respect to growth improvements following treatment with biologics,there are conflicting *** some studies report enhancement of growth,others do *** relationship between disease severity,impaired growth and the requirement for biologics needs to be considered when interpreting these ***,key features associated with improvements in growth appear to be successful clinical response to treatment,patients in early stages of puberty,and the presence of growth failure at the onset of treatment.

Male sex determination： insights into molecular mechanisms

Disorders of sex development often arise from anomalies in the molecular or cellular networks that guide the differentiation of the embryonic gonad into either a testis or an ovary, two functionally distinct organs. The activation of the Y-linked gene Sry （sex- determining region Y） and its downstream target Sox9 （Sry box-containing gene 9） triggers testis differentiation by stimulating the differentiation of Sertoli cells, which then direct testis morphogenesis. Once engaged, a genetic pathway promotes the testis development while actively suppressing genes involved in ovarian development. This review focuses on the events of testis determination and the struggle to maintain male fate in the face of antagonistic pressure from the underlying female programme.

Development of CaP nanocomposites as photothermal actuators for doxorubicin delivery to enhance breast cancer treatment

Breast cancer is the most common one in women worldwide and doxorubicin(Dox)is one of the most commonly used and effective drugs for breast cancer ***,Dox-based chemotherapy faces irreversible cardiotoxicity and unsatisfactory therapy *** is desirable to devise Dox nanoformulations with less adverse effects and greater therapeutic efficacy for this cancer *** this work,a multifunctional calcium phosphate nanoformulation(ICG-Dox/DNA@CaP)was developed by co-loading Dox/DNA complexes and indocyanine green(ICG)molecules for photothermal therapy(PTT)-enhanced *** this nanocomposite,using DNA as Dox carrier facilitated Dox loading into the CaP matrix,and significantly reduced Dox leakage as well as cytotoxicity in comparison with that of free Dox in physiological medium(pH 7.4).In specific,ICG-Dox/DNA@CaP only released Dox in a weakly acidic nuclease-containing environment,such as tumor microenvironment and endosome/***,Dox/DNA complexes exhibited synergistic interactions with ICG-based photothermal effect on tumor cell apoptosis in this ICG-Dox/DNA@CaP *** work has demonstrated a new strategy to combine FDA-approved therapeutics(Dox and ICG)in CaP-based nanomaterials for reduced cytotoxicity and enhanced therapeutic effect,and provided a new way to engineer CaP carriers as multifunctional delivery systems for clinical anti-cancer therapy.

DNA-directed assembly of copper nanoblocks with inbuilt fluorescent and electrochemical properties： Application in simultaneous amplification-free analysis of multiple RNA species

The intrinsic affinity of DNA molecules toward metallic ions can drive the specific formation of copper nanostructures within the nucleic acid helix structure in a sequence-dependent manner. The resultant nanostructures have interesting fluorescent and electrochemical properties, which are attractive for novel biosensing applications. However, the potential of using DNA-templated nano- structures for precision disease diagnosis remains unexplored. Particularly, DNA- templated nanostructures show high potential for the universal amplification-free detection of different RNA biomarker species. Because of their low cellular levels and differing species-dependent length and sequence features, simultaneous detection of different messenger RNAs, microRNAs, and long non-coding RNAs species with a single technique is challenging. Here, we report a contemporary technique for facile in situ assembly of DNA-templated copper nanoblocks （CuNBs） on various RNA species targets after hybridization-based magnetic isolation. Our approach circumvents the typical limitations associated with amplification and labeling procedures of current RNA assays. The synthesized CuNBs enabled amplification-free fM-level RNA detection with flexible fluorescence or electrochemical readouts. Furthermore, our nanosensing technique displays potential for clinical application, as demonstrated by non-invasive analysis of three diagnostic RNA biomarkers from a cohort of 10 prostate cancer patient urinary samples with 100%-concordance （quantitative reverse transcription- polymerase chain reaction （PCR） validation）. The good analytical performance and versatility of our method may be useful in both diagnostics and research fields.

The "five senses of success" in nursing students: Assessing first-year support engagement

Objectives: This study aimed to identify School and University support services available and accessed by nursing students transitioning into a university environment as many struggle to adjust to competing demands of personal commitments and expectations at ***: A mixed methods design was used,based on activity theory and Lizzio's Five Senses of Success frameworks as exploratory *** study was conducted amongst the first year cohort at one campus of the Bachelor of Nursing (BN) program in queensland,*** initial baseline assessment of what University and School-based support services were on offer for students,and how the students interacted with the support services was *** was followed by a survey to identify awareness and access to support *** groups were then conducted to clarify the previous results and to determine engagement with these support ***: A randomly selected number of students (n =150) in the first-year 2014 cohort of the BN program (n =300) were included in this *** survey was completed by 54 students and three semistructured focus groups were *** analysis indicated that the support services in place were successful in reaching the majority of students and contributed to their sense of success at university,Specifically students identified that a whole cohort approach to support enhanced their transition to ***: Identifying lesser known services early in the first year will ensure that students are supported and encouraged to use all services,contributing to their sense of success at university.

Economic burden of premature deaths attributable to different heatwaves in China: A multi-site study, 2014-2019

It has been well documented that heatwaves are linked to elevated mortality and ***,the selection of optimal heatwave definitions for subsequent risk assessment has been inconsistent and there is no full picture of the effects of heatwaves with different intensities on economic losses due to mortality,which can provide important insights for public health ***,we used a two-stage time series analysis,combined with values of statistical life(VsL)based on the value of a statistical life year to assess the economic burden of deaths associated with heatwaves of different intensities and durations and to identify the vulnerable populations and *** further conducted stratified analyses by age,sex,and *** found 2.9%(95%CI:0.0%,6.5%)-20.0%(95%CI:2.9%,34.2%)of VsL were attributable to heatwaves,corresponding to attributable economic losses(AELs)of 2.20(95%CI:0.32,3.77)-4.77(95%CI:1.53,7.63)billion *** economic burden of death was most sensitive to heatwave H99P_2D(99th percentile,at last 2 consecutive days),while H97.5P_2D(97.5th percentile,at last 2 consecutive days)caused the highest attributable economic *** and elderly people aged≥65 years were more *** AELs in the temperate zone and northern regions were larger than those in subtropical zone and southern regions during relatively low-intensity heatwaves,*** contrast,the AELs in subtropical zone and southern regions were relatively higher than those in temperate zone and northern regions during relatively high-intensity heatwaves,*** AELs were larger in urban areas than in rural *** intervention strategies,primarily focusing on vulnerable populations and regions,should be formulated to reduce the economic loss due to heatwaves in the context of climate change.
