Gastric cancer risk in relation to tobacco use and alcohol drinking in Kerala, India-Karunagappally cohort study

AIM: To assess the risk of gastric cancer(GC) in relation to tobacco use and alcohol drinking in the Karunagappally cohort in Kerala, South ***: This study examined the association of tobacco use and alcohol drinking with GC incidence among 65553 men aged 30-84 in the Karunagappally cohort. During the period from 1990-2009, 116 GC cases in the cohort were identified as incident cancers. These cases were identified from the populationbased cancer registry. Information regarding risk factors such as socioeconomic factors and tobacco and alcohol habits of cohort members were collected from the database of the baseline survey conducted during 1990-1997. The relative risks(RRs) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals(95%CIs) fortobacco use were obtained from Poisson regression analysis of grouped survival data, considering age, follow-up period, occupation and ***: Bidi smoking was associated with GC risk(P = 0.042). The RR comparing current versus never smokers was 1.6(95%CI: 1.0-2.5). GC risk was associated with the number of bidis smoked daily(P = 0.012) and with the duration of bidi smoking(P = 0.036). Those who started bidi smoking at younger ages were at an elevated GC risk; the RRs for those starting bidi smoking under the age of 18 and ages 18-22 were 2.0(95%CI: 1.0-3.9) and 1.8(95%CI: 1.1-2.9), respectively, when their risks were compared with lifetime non-smokers of bidis. Bidi smoking increased the risk of GC among never cigarette smokers more evidently(RR = 2.2; 95%CI: 1.3-4.0). GC risk increased with the cumulative amount of bidi smoking, which was calculated as the number of bidis smoked per day x years of smoking(bidi-year; P = 0.017). Cigarette smoking, tobacco chewing or alcohol drinking was not significantly associated with GC risk. CONCLUSION: Among a male cohort in South India, gastric cancer risk increased with the number and duration of bidi smoking.

Introduction: Oral health management is often difficult in patients after surgical tumor resection and/or radiotherapy due to defects, bulky flaps, limitation of tongue movement, and trismus. In addition, patients who have undergone radiotherapy have serious disabilities such as oral mucositis, mucosal weakening, soft tissue fibrosis, salivary gland disorder, and osteoradionecrosis. dental hygienists must understand the characteristics of patients after surgical tumor resection and/or radiotherapy. In this report, the oral health management of three patients after maxillectomy, mandibulectomy, and radiotherapy was shown. Case Description: Case 1: A 53-year-old male patient visited our clinic after chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and partial maxillectomy for cancer of the right maxillary gingiva. Case 2: A 65-year-old male patient visited our clinic after radiotherapy for a right-sided tongue cancer, partial mandibulectomy of the right tongue to the oropharynx, a right-sided segmental mandibulectomy and a speech aid and a mandibular prosthesis were provided. Case 3: A 36-year-old female visited our clinic for radiotherapy for left-sided tongue cancer. dental hygienists provided oral health management to the patients. In oral health management, it was suggested that intervention before cancer treatment, oral hygiene instructions tailored to patients’ symptoms, and frequent professional care are important. Conclusion: Oral health management by dental hygienists is extremely important for patients undergoing maxillofacial cancer treatment to maintain their quality of life in the long term.

dental pulp stem cells(DPSCs) secrete neurotrophic factors which may play an important therapeutic role in neural development, maintenance and repair. To test this hypothesis, DPSCs-conditioned medium(DPSCs-CM) was collected from 72 hours serum-free DPSCs cultures. The impact of DPSCs-derived factors on PC12 survival, growth, migration and differentiation was investigated. PC12 cells were treated with nerve growth factor(NGF), DPSCs-CM or co-cultured with DPSCs using Transwell inserts for 8 days. The number of surviving cells with neurite outgrowths and the length of neurites were measured by image analysis. Immunocytochemical staining was used to evaluate the expression of neuronal markers NeuN, microtubule associated protein 2(MAP-2) and cytoskeletal marker βIII-tubulin. Gene expression levels of axonal growth-associated protein 43 and synaptic protein Synapsin-I, NeuN, MAP-2 and βIII-tubulin were analysed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction(qRT-PCR). DPSCs-CM was analysed for the neurotrophic factors(NGF, brain-derived neurotrophic factor [BDNF], neurotrophin-3, and glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor [GDNF]) by specific ELISAs. Specific neutralizing antibodies against the detected neurotrophic factors were used to study their exact role on PC12 neuronal survival and neurite outgrowth extension. DPSCs-CM significantly promoted cell survival and induced the neurite outgrowth confirmed by NeuN, MAP-2 and βIII-tubulin immunostaining. Furthermore, DPSCsCM was significantly more effective in stimulating PC12 neurite outgrowths than live DPSCs/PC12 co-cultures over the time studied. The morphology of induced PC12 cells in DPSCs-CM was similar to NGF positive controls;however, DPSCs-CM stimulation of cell survival was significantly higher than what was seen in NGF-treated cultures. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging features of lipid-rich neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas

AIM:To clarify the computed tomography(CT) and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) characteristics of lipid-rich pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors(Pan NETs).METHODS:Enhanced CT and MRI performed before pancreatectomy in 29 patients with 34 histologicallyconfirmed Pan NETs was retrospectively reviewed. Tumor attenuation on CT and signal intensities on conventional(T1- and T2-weighted) and chemical shift MRI were qualitatively analyzed and compared alongside adipose differentiation-related protein(ADRP) immunostaining(ADRP-positive:lipid-rich; ADRP-negative:non-lipid-rich) results using Fisher's exact test or the Mann-Whitney U test. Signal intensity index on chemical shift MRI was quantitatively ***:There were 15 lipid-rich Pan NETs(44.1%) in 12 patients(41.4%). Tumor attenuation during the early,portal venous,and delayed phases of enhanced CT(P = 0.888,0.443,and 0.359,respectively) and signal intensities on conventional MRI(P = 0.698 and 0.798,respectively) were not significantly differentbetween lipid-rich and non-lipid-rich Pan NETs. Four of the 15 lipid-rich Pan NETs exhibited high signal intensity on subtraction chemical shift MRI,and the association of high signal intensity on subtraction imaging with lipid-rich Pan NETs was significant(4 of 15 lipid-rich Pan NETs,26.73%,vs 0 of 19 non-lipid-rich Pan NETs,0%,P = 0.029). Lipid-rich Pan NETs showed a significantly higher signal intensity index than non-lipidrich Pan NETs(0.6% ± 14.1% vs-10.4% ± 14.4%,P = 0.004). Eight of 15 lipid-rich Pan NETs,vs 0 of 19 nonlipid-rich Pan NETs,had positive signal intensity index values in concordance with lipid contents.C O N C L U S I O N :C T c o n t ra s t e n h a n c e m e n t a n d conventional MR signal intensities are similar in lipidrich and non-lipid-rich Pan NETs. Chemical shift MRI can demonstrate cytoplasmic lipids in Pan NETs.

Cancers that develop after middle age usually exhibit genomic instability and multiple mutations. This is in direct contrast to pediatric tumors that usually develop as a result of specific chromosomal translocations andepigenetic aberrations. The development of genomic instability is associated with mutations that contribute to cellular immortalization and transformation. Cancer occurs when cancer-initiating cells(CICs), also called cancer stem cells, develop as a result of these mutations. In this paper, we explore how CICs develop as a result of genomic instability, including looking at which cancer suppression mechanisms are abrogated. A recent in vitro study revealed the existence of a CIC induction pathway in differentiating stem cells. Under aberrant differentiation conditions, cells become senescent and develop genomic instabilities that lead to the development of CICs. The resulting CICs contain a mutation in the alternative reading frame of CDKN2A(ARF)/p53 module, i.e., in either ARF or p53. We summarize recently established knowledge of CIC development and cellular immortality, explore the role of the ARF/p53 module in protecting cells from transformation, and describe a risk factor for genomic destabilization that increases during the process of normal cell growth and differentiation and is associated with the downregulation of histone H2 AX to levels representative of growth arrest in normal cells.

Bee pollen extract of Malaysian stingless bee enhances the effect of cisplatin on breast cancer cell lines

Objective: To evaluate the antioxidant and antiproliferative effect of methanolic bee pollen extract(BPE) of Malaysian stingless bee [Lepidotrigona terminata(L. terminata)]and its synergistic effect with cisplatin(a chemotherapeutic drug) on MCF-7 cancer cell ***: The antioxidant activity of BPE from L. terminata was measured by using1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical(DPPH) assay. Antiproliferative activity at different concentrations of BPE and cisplatin was determined through using MTT assay on MCF-7 and L929 cell lines. An interaction effect(synergistic, additive and antagonistic) between BPE and cisplatin was determined by Compu Syn software based on MTT assay ***: The EC50(50% decrement of DPPH inhibition) of BPE was 0.5 mg/m L.L. terminata BPE exhibited antiproliferative activity on both cancer and normal cell *** IC50(concentration of drug that was required for 50% of cell inhibition in vitro) of BPE on MCF-7 was 15 mg/m L whereas in normal cell line L929 was 26 mg/m L. The IC50 for cisplatin on MCF-7 was 20 mmol/L. The combination effect of BPE and cisplatin on MCF-7 cells showed that BPE at 15 mg/m L was able to potentiate the inhibitory effect of cisplatin at all different concentrations(2.5–20.0 mg/m L). The average of cancer cells inhibition which was potentiated by BPE was around 50%. A combination index values of less than 1 reported in the Compu Syn software further proved the synergistic effect between BPE and cisplatin, suggesting that BPE was working synergistically with ***: Our study therefore suggested that BPE of Malaysian stingless bee,L. terminata is a potential chemopreventive agent and can be used as a supplementary treatment for chemotherapy drugs. Corrosion Behaviors of Disinfectants on dental Unit Waterlines

To investigate the corrosion behaviors and antibacterial effects of sodium hypochlorite(NaClO)and hydrogen peroxide silver ion(HPSI)disinfectants with different concentrations against dental unit waterlines and provide guidance and reference for the use of chemical disinfectants,polyurethane tubes were immersed in ultrapure water(control group),0.1%NaClO,0.5%NaClO,1.0%NaClO,2.5%HPSI,5.0%HPSI,and 10%HPSI solutions for 6,12,and 18 *** angles and Fourier transform infrared spectra were *** morphologies were observed using scanning electron microscopy and antibacterial activity was evaluated using Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus(***).The results showed that sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide silver ion disinfectants presented good antibacterial activity against ***,sodium hypochlorite could cause serious damage to the water pipes where corrosion pits and cracks were observed,and increasing the concentration of sodium hypochlorite could accelerate the corrosion *** peroxide silver ion disinfectants had no obvious damage to the water ***,hydrogen peroxide silver ion disinfectants are recommended to use for controlling bacterial infection in dental unit waterlines which can reduce the damage to the water pipes.

The crown form of maxillary central incisor tooth is one of the vital phenomenon for a person’s *** crown form has been compared with other anatomical parameters such as arch form and facial *** different classes of tooth forms which relate to square,tapered,and ovoid forms are *** aim of this study was to morphometrically evaluate the correlation between maxillary dental arch form and the maxillary central incisor crown *** cast models of fifty male and fifty female normal occlusion controls in the age group of 18-23 years were *** mesiodistal(MD)dimensions of the maxillary central incisors were measured at incisal(MD_I)and at gingival(MD_G)*** transverse widths of maxillary casts were measured at the first molar and at the first premolar *** measured data were statistically analyzed using the SPSS *** MD dimensions of maxillary central incisor were significantly greater in males than *** ratio between the two MD dimensions also varied significantly among *** intermolar width(IMW)and interfirst premolar width(IPmW)between males and females were highly significant(P<0.05),whereas the ratio between these two parameters in males and females was not significant(P=0.43).Eighty‑eight percentage of the participants were found to have an ovoid type of maxillary arch,while only 45%of them had the ovoid form of maxillary central *** MD_I and the IMW were found to be in the ratio of 1:5.5 in both *** MD_G and the IPmW were in the ratio of 1:4.7 in males and 1:4.5 in *** was a weak positive correlation between MD_I and IMW(r^(2)=0.146)and between MD_G and IPmW(r^(2)=0.05).No significant concordance between the maxillary central incisor crown form and the maxillary arch form was found in this study.
