Comparison of chest CT scan findings between COVID-19 and pulmonary contusion in trauma patients based on RSNA criteria:Established novel criteria for trauma victims

Propose:In this study,we re-assessed the criteria defined by the radiological society of North America(RSNA)to determine novel radiological findings helping the physicians differentiating COVID-19 from pulmonary contusion.Methods:All trauma patients with blunt chest wall trauma and subsequent pulmonary contusion,COVID-19-related signs and symptoms before the trauma were enrolled in this retrospective study from February to May 2020.Included patients(Group P)were then classified into two groups based on polymerase chain reaction tests(Group Pa for positive patients and Pb for negative ones).Moreover,44 patients from the prepandemic period(Group PP)were enrolled.They were matched to Group P regarding age,sex,and trauma-related scores.Two radiologists blindly reviewed the CT images of all enrolled patients according to criteria defined by the RSNA criteria.The radiological findings were compared between Group P and Group PP;statistically significant ones were re-evaluated between Group Pa and Group Pb thereafter.Finally,the sensitivity and specificity of each significant findings were calculated.The Chi-square test was used to compare the radiologica丨findings between Group P and Group PP.Results:In the Group PP,73.7%of all ground-glass opacities(GGOs)and 80%of all multiple bilateral GGOs were detected(p<0.001 and p=0.25,respectively).Single bilateral GGOs were only seen among the Group PP.The Chi-square tests showed that the prevalence of diffused GGOs,multiple unilateral GGOs,multiple consolidations,and multiple bilateral consolidations were significantly higher in the Group P(p=0.001,0.01,0.003,and 0.003,respectively).However,GGOs with irregular borders and single consolidations were more significant among the Group PP(p=0.01 and 0.003,respectively).Of note,reticular distortions and subpleural spares were exclusively detected in the Group PP.Conclusion:We concluded that the criteria set by RSNA for the diagnosis of COVID-19 are not appropriate in trauma patients.The clinical signs and symptoms are not always usefu

Cell replacement therapy using neural progenitor cells(NPCs)has been shown to be an effective treatment for ischemic stroke.However,the therapeutic effect is unsatisfactory due to the imbalanced homeostasis of the local microenvironment after ischemia.Microenvironmental acidosis is a common imbalanced homeostasis in the penumbra and could activate acid-sensing ion channels 1a(ASIC1a),a subunit of proton-gated cation channels following ischemic stroke.However,the role of ASIC1a in NPCs post-ischemia remains elusive.Here,our results indicated that ASIC1a was expressed in NPCs with channel functionality,which could be activated by extracellular acidification.Further evidence revealed that ASIC1a activation inhibited NPC migration and neurogenesis through RhoA signaling-mediated reorganization of filopodia formation,which could be primarily reversed by pharmacological or genetic disruption of ASIC1a.In vivo data showed that the knockout of the ASIC1a gene facilitated NPC migration and neurogenesis in the penumbra to improve behavioral recovery after stroke.

Treating patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC)is challenging due to the high chemoresistance.Growth differentiation factor 15(GDF15)is crucial in the development of various types of tumors and negatively related to the prognosis of ESCC patients according to our previous research.In this study,the link between GDF15 and chemotherapy resistance in ESCC was further explored.The relationship between GDF15 and the chemotherapy response was investigated through in vitro and in vivo studies.ESCC patients with high levels of GDF15 expression showed an inferior chemotherapeutic response.GDF15 improved the tolerance of ESCC cell lines to low-dose cisplatin by regulating AKT phosphorylation via TGFBR2.Through an in vivo study,we further validated that the anti-GDF15 antibody improved the tumor inhibition effect of cisplatin.Metabolomics showed that GDF15 could alter cellular metabolism and enhance the expression of UGT1A.AKT and TGFBR2 inhibition resulted in the reversal of the GDF15-induced expression of UGT1A,indicating that TGFBR2-AKT pathway-dependent metabolic pathways were involved in the resistance of ESCC cells to cisplatin.The present investigation suggests that a high level of GDF15 expression leads to ESCC chemoresistance and that GDF15 can be targeted during chemotherapy,resulting in beneficial therapeutic outcomes.

Study of Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide on the Surface of Sn-doped Carbon Nanotube

In recent years, the discovery of suitable catalyst to the oxidation of carbon monoxide(CO) is a major concern in industry. In present study, in the first step the carbon nanotube(CNT) with Sn was doped and the surface of Sn-CNT via O_2 molecule was activated. In the second step the CO oxidation on the surface of Sn-CNT via Langmuir Hinshelwood(LH) and Eley Rideal(ER) mechanisms was investigated. Results show that O_2-Sn-CNT can oxidize the CO molecule via Sn-CNT-O-O* + CO → Sn-CNT-O-O*-CO → Sn-CNT-O* + CO_2 and Sn-CNT-O* + CO → Sn-CNT + CO_2 reactions. Results show that CO oxidation on activated Sn-CNT surface via the ER mechanism has lower energy barrier than LH mechanism. Finally, calculated parameters reveal that activated Sn-CNT is an acceptable catalyst with high potential to the oxidation of CO molecule.

Antioxidant Activity of Sesamol Derivatives and Their Drug Delivery via C60 Nanocage: a Theoretical Study

The antioxidant activity of sesamol derivatives and their drug delivery via fullerene were investigated. Fullerene can interact with sesamol derivatives, and their adsorptions were possible from the energetic viewpoint. Adding the NH_2 group to sesamol can improve the sensitivity of sesamol toward fullerene surface. The NH_2 and OMe substitutions increase the antioxidant activity of sesamol. The results can also be used to select novel sesamol derivatives with higher antioxidant activity and higher drug delivery ability.

Global prevalence of drug-resistant tuberculosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background Tuberculosis is a bacterial infectious disease,which affects different parts of a human body,mainly lungs and can lead to the patient’s death.The aim of this study is to investigate the global prevalence of drug-resistant tuberculosis using a systematic review and meta-analysis.Methods In this study,the PubMed,Scopus,Web of Science,Embase,ScienceDirect and Google Scholar repositories were systematically searched to find studies reporting the global prevalence of drug-resistant tuberculosis.The search did not entail a lower time limit,and articles published up until August 2022 were considered.Random effects model was used to perform the analysis.The heterogeneity of the studies was examined with the I^(2) test.Data analysis was conducted within the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software.Results In the review of 148 studies with a sample size of 318,430 people,the I^(2) index showed high heterogeneity(I^(2)=99.6),and accordingly random effects method was used to analyze the results.Publication bias was also examined using the Begg and Mazumdar correlation test which indicated the existence of publication bias in the studies(P=0.008).According to our meta-analysis,the global pooled prevalence of multi-drug resistant TB is 11.6%(95%CI:9.1–14.5%).Conclusions The global prevalence of drug-resistant tuberculosis was found to be very high,thus health authorities should consider ways to control and manage the disease to prevent a wider spread of tuberculosis and potentially subsequent deaths.

Association of risky driving behavior with psychiatric disorders among Iranian drivers:A case-control study

Purpose:This study aimed to investigate the possible association between psychological disorders and riskydriving behavior(RDB)in Iran.Methods:This case-control study conducted in Shiraz,Iran in 2021.The case group included drivers with psychological disorders and the control group included those without any disorders.The inclusion criteria for selecting patients were:active driving at the time of the study,being 18-65 years old,having a driving license,having a psychological disorder including depression,bipolar disorder,anxiety spectrum disorder,or psychotic disorder spectrum confirmed by a psychiatrist,and completing an informed consent form.The exclusion criterion was the existence of conditions that interfered with answering and understanding the questions.The inclusion criteria for selecting the healthy cases were:active driving at the time of the study,being 18-65 years old,having a driving license,lack of any past or present history of psychiatric problems,and completing an informed consent form.The data were gathered using a researcher-made checklist and Manchester driving behavior questionnaire.First,partition around medoids method was used to extract clusters of RDB.Then,backward logistic regression was applied to investigate the association between the independent variables and the clusters of RDB.Results:The sample comprised of 344(153 with psychological disorder and 191 without confirmed psychological disorder)drivers.Backward elimination logistic regression on total data revealed that share of medical expenditure≤10%of total household expenditure(OR=3.27,95%Cl:1.48-7.24),psychological disorder(OR=3.08,95%Cl:1.67-5.70),and substance abuse class(OR=6.38,95%CI:3.55-11.48)wereassociatedwithhighlevelof RDB.Conclusion:Substance abuse,psychological illnesses,and share of medical costs from total household expenditure were found to be main predictors of RDB.Further investigations are necessary to explain the impact of different psychological illnesses on driving behavior.

Background:With functionally heterogeneous cells,tumors comprise a complex ecosystem to promote tumor adaptability and evolution under strong selective pressure from the given microenvironment.Diversifying tumor cells or intra-tumor heterogeneity is essential for tumor growth,invasion,and immune evasion.However,no reliable method to classify tumor cell subtypes is yet available.In this study,we introduced the single-cell sequencing combined with copy number characteristics to identify the types of tumor cells in microsatellite stable(MSS)colorectal cancer(CRC).Methods:To characterize the somatic copy number alteration(SCNA)of MSS CRC in a single cell profile,we analyzed 26 tissue samples from 19 Korean patients(GSE132465,the Samsung medical center[SMC]dataset)and then verified our findings with 15 tissue samples from five Belgian patients(GSE144735,the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven 3[KUL3]dataset).The Cancer Genome Atlas(TCGA)cohort,GSE39582 cohort,and National Cancer center(NCC)cohort(24 MSS CRC patients were enrolled in this study between March 2017 and October 2017)were used to validate the clinical features of prognostic signatures.Results:We employed single cell RNA-sequencing data to identify three types of tumor cells in MSS CRC by their SCNA characteristics.Among these three types of tumor cells,C1 and C3 had a higher SCNA burden;C1 had significant chromosome 13 and 20 amplification,whereas C3 was the polar opposite of C1,which exhibited deletion in chromosome 13 and 20.The three types of tumor cells exhibited various functions in the tumor microenvironment and harbored different mutations.C1 and C2 were linked to the immune response and hypoxia,respectively,while C3 was critical for cell adhesion activity and tumor angiogenesis.Additionally,one gene(OLFM4)was identified as epithelium-specific biomarker of better prognosis of CRC(TCGA cohort:P=0.0110;GSE39582 cohort:P=0.0098;NCC cohort:P=0.0360).Conclusions:On the basis of copy number characteristics,we illustrated tumor heterogeneity in MSS CRC and iden

Incidence and survival of neuroendocrine neoplasms in China with comparison to the United States

Background:Neuroendocrine neoplasms(NENs)are rare tumors characterized by variable biology and delayed diagnosis.However,the nationwide epidemiology of NENs has never been reported in China.We aimed to estimate the incidence and survival statistics of NENs in China,in comparison to those in the United States during the same period.Methods:Based on the data from 246 population-based cancer registries covering 272.5 million people of China,we calculated age-specific incidence on NENs in 2017 and multiplied by corresponding national population to estimate the nationwide incidence in China.The data of 22 population-based cancer registries were used to estimate the trends of NENs incidence from 2000 to 2017 through the Joinpoint regression model.We used the cohort approach to analyze the 5-year age-standardized relative survival by sex,age group,and urban-rural area between 2008 and 2013,based on data from 176 high-quality cancer registries.We used data from the Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Results(SEER)18 program to estimate the comparable incidence and survival of NENs in the United States.Results:The overall age-standardized rate(ASR)of NENs incidence was lower in China(1.14 per 100,000)than in the United States(6.26 per 100,000).The most common primary sites were lungs,pancreas,stomach,and rectum in China.The ASRs of NENs incidence increased by 9.8%and 3.6%per year in China and the United States,respectively.The overall 5-year relative survival in China(36.2%)was lower than in the United States(63.9%).The 5-year relative survival was higher for female patients than male patients,and was higher in urban areas than in rural areas.Conclusions:The disparities in burden of NENs persist across sex,area,age group,and site in China and the United States.These findings may provide a scientific basis on prevention and control of NENs in the two countries.

Background:During Enterovirus type 71(EV71)infection,the structural viral protein 1(VP1)activates endoplasmic reticulum(ER)stress associated with peripheral myelin protein 22(PMP22)accumulation and induces autophagy.However,the speciﬁc mechanism behind this process remains elusive.Methods:In this research,we used the VP1-overexpressing mouse Schwann cells(SCs)models co-transfected with a PMP22 silencing or Autocrine motility factor receptor(AMFR/gp78)overexpressing vector to explore the regulation of gp78 on PMP22 and its relationship with autophagy and apoptosis.Results:The activity of gp78 could be inﬂuenced by EV71-VP1,leading to a decrease in the ubiquitination and degradation of PMP22,resulting in PMP22 accumulation in ER.In VP1-overexpressing mouse SCs,all three ER stress sensors,including pancreatic endoplasmic reticulum kinase(PERK),activating transcription factor 6(ATF6)and inositol-requiring enzyme 1(IRE1)and the related downstream signals(C/EBP-homologous protein(CHOP)and Caspase 12)were activated,as well as the ER-resident chaperone Glucose-regulated protein 78(GRP78).In addition,VP1 upregulated the autophagy marker Microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 beta(LC3B),while PMP22 silencing or gp78 overexpression reversed the phenomenon.Meanwhile,PMP22 silencing or gp78 overexpression increased proliferation of EV71-VP1-transfected mouse SCs.Conclusion:Gp78 could regulate PMP22 accumulation through ubiquitination degradation and cause ER stress and autophagy in EV71-VP1-overexpressing mouse SCs.Therefore,the gp78/PMP22/ER stress axis might emerge as a promising therapeutic target for myelin and neuronal damage induced by EV71 infection.
