Aim:To investigate the effects of cisplatin on the human non-small cell lung carcinoma(NCI-H460)cell line regarding cytotoxicity,genotoxicity,and expression of genes associated with apoptosis(BIRC5)and autophagy(BECN1).Methods:Cell cultures were treated with cisplatin concentrations(0.16-33.3μmol/L)for 48 *** and acute and chronic cytotoxicities were assessed using the MTT,clonogenic,and cytokinesis-block micronucleus *** expression of BIRC5 and BECN1 was evaluated by reverse transcription-polymerase chain ***:Cisplatin IC50(0.33μmol/L)increased micronucleus frequency 2.50 *** was also cytotoxic in the 0.6-33.3μmol/L range,with reduced expression of the BIRC5 gene,suggesting induction of *** reducing the expression of the BIRC5 gene,33.3μmol/L cisplatin increased the expression of the BECN1 gene,suggesting that autophagy can be related to cisplatin ***:Cisplatin inhibited NCI-H460 growth,and cisplatin IC50 induced genotoxic *** higher cisplatin concentrations are used,the expression of genes associated with apoptosis and autophagy was *** results points to a further investigation of the role of autophagy in cisplatin resistance.

Properties of Microcrystalline Chitosan-Calcium Phosphate Complex Composite

Nature itself uses materials like, cellulose to provide the structure of plants, chitin as the exoskeleton of several insects and molluscs, collagen for mechanical support in connective tissues and so on. At present, the socioeconomic situation of the modern world has raised the interest in renewable materials being used in regenerative medicine. The composition of MCCh/?-TCP complex in sponge shape is derived from the junction of two or more different materials, containing organic and inorganic materials, including bioactivity and biodegradability as a characteristic. The chemical characteristics of MCCh/?-TCP complex composites showed that both of the components organic and inorganic exist in the material. All sponge preparations, with MCCh/?-TCP have a well-shaped 3-dimentional structure, a highly porous and interconnected and homogenous pore structure to ensure a biological environment conducive to cell attachment and proliferation as well as tissue growth, providing the passage of nutrient flow. These materials can be used in future for medical applications as a base for scaffolds production and as implants in regenerative medicine.

The skeletal system in the human body is very important, provides support and gives shape to the body and provides a network between all soft tissues. The most common problems in hard tissues are bone fractures, defects or diseases which needed to be treated. The developments in artificial bone area seem to solve most of the hard tissue problems, on the other hand artificial bones themselves may cause other problems and in many cases they do not have sufficient mechanical properties and/or good biocompatibility. The importance of chitosan and its derivatives like microcrystalline chitosan has grown significantly over the last two decades due to its renewable and biodegradable source, and also because of the increase in the knowledge of its functionality in the technological and biomedical applications. The excellent biocompability, biofunctionality, and non-antigenic property make the chitosan and its derivatives as a microcrystalline chitosan an ideal material for tissue regeneration. To improve the suitability of chitosan for bone tissue engineering, the composites of MCCh and hydroxyapatite were studied. In the present work the characterization of the MCCh and composites with HAp in form of films and sponges, is based on physico-chemical tests, morphology, structure, particle size of HAp powder and distribution in the polymer matrix. The compositions with film and sponge shape are derived from the junction of two different materials, containing organic and inorganic substances. All sponge preparations, with HAp/MCCh have a well-shaped 3-dimensional structure, which could be used as implants in orthopedic surgery for a scaffolds base for medical applications.

Valeriana eichle riana (C. A. Muller) Graebner pollen are described and documented, used optical and scanning eletronic microscopy. We found that the current descriptions available goes this pollen disagree with the general pollinic pattern of the genera. Consequently, we conclude that the previous work in this area have taxonomical errors leading to inappropiate paleoenvironmental interpretations.

Sexual Diversity and Homophobia in Health Care Services: Perceptions of Homosexual and Bisexual Population in the Cross-Cultural Theory

The provision of care by health professionals seems to be related to cultural patterns in which these workers are inserted. The relationship between culture and care becomes a challenge for the provision of health care to homosexual and bisexual population. Thus, this study aimed to identify the perception of Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transgenders in relation to the care received from health professionals, in the light of Cross-Cultural Theory. This is a qualitative, ethnographic study, conducted with 30 members of sexual minorities in Juazeiro do Norte, brazil. The data analysis lead to the elaboration of five categories based on of the Theory of Cultural Care Diversity and Universality. The participants emphasized the constant violation of their rights to universal and equitable access to the National Health System, stating that they have suffered from prejudice and exclusion, as result of a heteronormative culture. They highlighted that homophobia and dehumanization of care have a strong relation to sexual orientation. The transvestites are the most prone to humiliation and pejorative attitudes of professionals and such condition is a barrier to accessing services.

BACKGROUND Cirrhosis is an important health problem characterized by a significant change in liver *** animals,this can be reproduced by an experimental model of bile duct ligation(BDL).Melatonin(MLT)is a physiological hormone synthesized from serotonin that has been studied for its beneficial properties,including its antioxidant *** To evaluate MLT’s effects on oxidative stress,the inflammatory process,and DNA damage in an experimental model of secondary biliary *** Male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups:Control(CO),CO+MLT,BDL,and BDL+*** was administered(20 mg/kg)daily beginning on day 15 after biliary *** day 29 the animals were *** samples,liver tissue,and bone marrow were collected for further *** BDL caused changes in biochemical and histological parameters and markers of inflammatory *** acid(0.46±0.01)reactive substance levels,superoxide dismutase activity(2.30±0.07)and nitric oxide levels(2.48±0.36)were significantly lower(P<0.001)n the groups that received *** damage was also lower(P<0.001)in MLT-treated groups(171.6±32.9)than the BDL-only group(295.5±34.8).Tissue damage and the expression of nuclear factor kappa B,interleukin-1β,Nrf2,NQO1 and Hsp70 were significantly lower in animals treated with MLT(P<0.001).CONCLUSION When administered to rats with BDL-induced secondary biliary cirrhosis,MLT effectively restored the evaluated parameters.

Background: Skin reactions and musculoskeletal injuries caused by intramuscular injection are an increased risk for skin and soft tissue infections and may culminate in sepsis. Objective: To describe the history of an elderly patient who developed a lesion in her right arm after home administration of intramuscular iron injection in this arm and its outcome. Methods: This is a case report of a patient who participated in a study in an intensive care unit. Results: This study describes a 65-year-old patient with multiple comorbidities who was admitted to the hospital complaining of pain for two months and difficulty in moving her right shoulder associated with skin and soft tissue infections in her right arm after intramuscular iron administration by a relative for the treatment of multifactorial anemia and refractory melena. The patient worsened her general condition and was transferred to the intensive care unit. Despite the therapy instituted, the patient developed sepsis of cutaneous origin, multiple organ dysfunction, and death. Conclusions: The administration of intramuscular medication requires the participation of qualified professionals, such as nurses, mainly within the scope of the brazilian public health system which commonly comprises patients in a context of vulnerability.

Tuberculosis is one of the 10 leading causes of death in the world. Its symptoms include fever, malaise, weakness, weight loss, chest pain, cough, expectoration, shortness of breath and sepsis, which is its most frequent complication. Due to these symptoms, many patients with tuberculosis require admission to the Intensive Care Unit, where they usually are placed on mechanical ventilation. Tuberculosis is more prevalent in the population in situations of social and economic vulnerability. The main factors that interfere with adherence to treatment and the prognosis of these patients are the patient’s support network and their socioeconomic status. We present the following report of a long-time smoker patient, with chronic kidney disease and previous treatment for tuberculosis, who was brought to the emergency room due to lowering of the sensorium, and was immediately placed on mechanical ventilation. The tests suggested sepsis with a respiratory focus, so a search for Alcohol-Acid-Resistant Bacillus was carried out, with a positive result. The patient was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit due to tachycardia and acute respiratory failure. The patient was a smoker with a high tobacco load, chronic kidney disease, in addition to precarious economic, educational and self-care conditions. This report shows that patients with tuberculosis and its complications can be stabilized through known pharmacological treatment. However, the most effective measure to interrupt the transmission of the disease remains the early diagnosis and the provision of adequate treatment, with guidelines aimed at the cessation of harmful habits, such as smoking.

Evidences of Holocene transgression on Domingos Petrolini Swamp, southern coastal plain, Rio Grande do Sul, brazil

The Domingos Petrolini Swamp, located on the Southern Coastal Plain of Rio Grande do Sul, near the town of Rio Grande, constitutes an ample holocene lagoonal deposit. Events related to the holocene transgression and their diverse phases of glacial-eustatic ocillations were found through palynological analysis. Bases on these palynological data, four distinct phases to the paleoenvironmental evolution of the ecosystem were identified. It has also shown a transgressive restricted marine sequence on the base, which suggests the existence of a coastal brackish lagoon or a marisme type of environment. Later, there was a gradation for continentality conditions along with a scarce pollinical record. The third phase is characterized by the presence of marine components and halophyte vegetation, showing another transgressive event in that place. Lastly, the end of direct marine influence over the swamp was recorded and also the vegetation development as it appears these days.

Antidepressant Drugs Modulate Differentially Anti-inflammatory Lithium＇s Property： An in Vitro and in Vivo Study

Li （lithium）, a mood stabilizer has anti-inflammatory effect. However, in clinical practice, Li can be administered together with other antidepressants drugs, such as FLX （fluoxetine）, IMI （imipramine）, NOR （nortriptyline） and ESC （escitalopram）. As interaction between Li and these antidepressant drugs on inflammatory modulation has not been investigated yet, we performed an in vitro protocol using a non-human macrophage cell line. Oxidative and inflammatory markers, as well as cell cycle analysis and cytokine gene expressions were compared among treatments. An IR （inflammatory ratio） was calculated based on the following oxidative-inflammatory variables： nitric oxide, superoxide anion, reactive oxygen molecules, cytokines IL-113, IL-6, TNF-ct and IL-10. The in vitro calculated IR data were validated through an in vivo analysis of 154 human subjects with similar IR. Li and control cells presented similar IR values. FLX, NOR and IMI increased slightly IR values indicating some proinflammatory effect, whereas ESC decreased IR values indicating some anti-inflammatory effect. However, cells exposed to Li ＋ ESC triggered a proinflammatory response on macrophages. Thus, IR comparison results suggest that the Li anti-inflammatory effect is not universal and could be influenced by both basal macrophage-inflammatory state and interaction of other psychiatric drugs. These results could be useful to understand some inconsistencies observed in human studies involving Li and other psychiatric drugs.
