ZrO 2-Al 2O 3 composite oxides and supported Ni catalysts were prepared, and characterized by N 2 adsorption /desorption, X-ray diffraction(XRD) an d X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) techniques. The catalytic performance and carbon deposition was also investigated. This mesoporous composite oxide is shown to be a promising catalyst support. An increase in the catalytic activity and stability of methane and carbon dioxide reforming reaction was resulted from the zirconia addition, especially at 5wt% ZrO 2 content. The Ni catalyst supported ZrO 2-Al 2O 3 has a strong resistance to sintering and the carbon deposition in a relatively long-term reaction.

Teratocytes are specialized cells released by parasitoid wasps into their *** are known for producing regulatory molecules that aid the development of imma-ture *** have recently reported the primary structures of cystine-rich peptides,including some containing inhibitor cystine knot(ICK)motifs,produced by teratocytes of the parasitoid Cotesia flavipes(Hymenoptera:Braconidae).ICKs are known for their stability and diverse biological *** this study,we produced four putative ICK peptides from the teratocytes of *** using solid-phase peptide synthesis or recom-binant expression in ***,and investigated their functions on host immune modulation as well their potential to impair the development of two lepidopterans after ingestion of the *** addition,the peptides were assayed against pathogens and human *** peptides did not influence total hemocyte count but suppressed cellular immunity,detectable as a reduction of hemocyte encapsulation(CtICK-I,CftICK-II,CtICK-I)and spread indexes(CftICK-IV)in the *** of the peptides influenced the activi-ties of prophenoloxidase and phenoloxidase in the hemolymph of larval Diatraea sacchar-alis(Lepidoptera:Crambidae).CftICK-I and CftICK-II with previously unknown function showed antifungal activity against Candida albicans but were non-toxic to human ***-I,CftICK-II,and CftICK-II increased larval mortality and reduced leaf consump-tion of ***,a permissive host for *** CftICK-III also increased larval mortality and reduced leaf consumption of Spodoptera frugiperda(Lepidoptera:Noctuidae),a non-permissive host for *** study highlights biological func-tions and biotechnological potential of ICK peptides from the teratocytes of ***.

One of the main difficulties in the geotechnical design process lies in dealing with uncertainty. Uncertainty is associated with natural variation of properties, and the imprecision and unpredictability caused by insufficient information on parameters or models. Probabilistic methods are normally used to quantify uncertainty. However, the frequentist approach commonly used for this purpose has some ***, it lacks a formal framework for incorporating knowledge not represented by data. Second, it has limitations in providing a proper measure of the confidence of parameters inferred from data. The Bayesian approach offers a better framework for treating uncertainty in geotechnical design. The advantages of the Bayesian approach for uncertainty quantification are highlighted in this paper with the Bayesian regression analysis of laboratory test data to infer the intact rock strength parameters σand mused in the Hoek-Brown strength criterion. Two case examples are used to illustrate different aspects of the Bayesian methodology and to contrast the approach with a frequentist approach represented by the nonlinear least squares(NLLS) method. The paper discusses the use of a Student’s t-distribution versus a normal distribution to handle outliers, the consideration of absolute versus relative residuals, and the comparison of quality of fitting results based on standard errors and Bayes factors. Uncertainty quantification with confidence and prediction intervals of the frequentist approach is compared with that based on scatter plots and bands of fitted envelopes of the Bayesian approach. Finally, the Bayesian method is extended to consider two improvements of the fitting analysis. The first is the case in which the Hoek-Brown parameter, a, is treated as a variable to improve the fitting in the triaxial region. Background:Pneumonia is the leading cause of mortality for children below 5 years of *** majority of these occur in poor countries with limited access to *** World Health Organization (WHO) criterion for pneumonia is the de facto method for *** is designed targeting a high sensitivity and uses easy to measure *** WHO criterion has poor ***:We propose a method using common measurements (including the WHO parameters) to diagnose pneumonia at high sensitivity and *** clinical features obtained from 134 subjects were used to create a series of logistic regression *** started with one feature at a time,and continued building models with increasing number of features until we exhausted all possible *** used a k-fold cross validation method to measure the performance of the ***:The sensitivity of our method was comparable to that of the WHO criterion but the specificity was 84%-655% *** the 2-11 month age group,the WHO criteria had a sensitivity and specificity of 92.0%±11.6% and 38.1%±18.5%,*** best model (using the existence of a runny nose,the number of days with runny nose,breathing rate and temperature) performed at a sensitivity of 91.3%±13.0% and specificity of 70.2%±22.80%.In the 12-60 month age group,the WHO algorithm gave a sensitivity of 95.7%±7.6% at a specificity of 9.8%±13.1%,while our corresponding sensitivity and specificity were 94.0%±12.1% and 74.0%±23.3%,respectively (using fever,number of days with cough,heart rate and chest in-drawing).Conclusions:The WHO algorithm can be improved through mathematical analysis of clinical observations and measurements routinely made in the *** method is simple and easy to implement on a mobile *** method allows the freedom to pick the best model in any arbitrary field scenario (e.g.,when an oximeter is not available).

A greater understanding of the relative impact of insecticide use on non-target species is critical for the incorporation of natural enemies into integrated pest management strategies. Here we use a small-plot field trial to examine the relative impact of an insec- ticide on herbivores and predators found in soybean （Glycine max L.）, and to highlight the issues associated with calculating impact factors from these studies. The pyrethroid insecticide （Deltamethrin） caused a significant reduction in invertebrate abundance in the treated plots, and populations did not recover to pre-treatment levels even 20 days af- ter spraying. To assess the relative impact of the spray on arthropods we first examined the mean difference in abundance in each plot before and after spraying. All herbivores decreased in abundance in the sprayed plots but increased in the control plots after spray- ing. Most predators （excluding hemipterans） showed a decrease in the control plots but a proportionally greater decrease in the sprayed plots. Next we examined the corrected per- centage population reduction calculated using Abbott＇s formula. All predators （including Araneae） experienced a greater reduction （mean 87% 4- 3.54 SE） than herbivores （mean 56% -4- 4.37 SE） and Araneae alone （mean 71% 4- 8.12 SE）. The range in values across the plots varied and made categorising overall impact subjective for some taxa. Despite the constraints associated with small-plot trials, by using a combination of impact factors and examining community-level response across time, we did get some indication of the likely impact of this insecticide if used in a commercial situation.

The relationships between vertebrate pests and crop damage are often complex and difficult to *** palm oil plantations rodents remain the major pests,causing substantial monetary *** present study examined the numerical and functional responses of rodents to changes in the availability of oil palm fruit and the damage associated with that *** the study,200 traps were set in pairs on a 10×10 trapping grid for 3 consecutive nights in each of 6 study plots at 8-week intervals in a 2569 ha oil palm plantation at Labu,Negeri Sembilan state in Peninsular Malaysia over 14 months.A total of 1292 individual rats were captured over 25200 *** were identified,aged,sexed,weighed and *** index of the relative abundance of rats was calculated based on trapping *** to infructescences was assessed at each trap *** of the age of palms,there were positive and significant relationships between the relative abundance of rats and numbers of *** levels of damage to infructescences were significantly correlated with the relative abundance of rats.A steep increase in damage was observed with an increase in mature infructescences,indicating a feeding preference of rats for mature *** both males and females of all rat species,there were weak and non-significant correlations between body condition and infructescence *** results indicated that there was a numerical and a functional response by rats to the availability of palm fruit and a resulting increase in depredation of oil palm *** ways in which this information might aid in future pest control are discussed.

Hydrogen storage is a real challenge for realizing "hydrogen economy" that will solve the critical is- sues of humanity such as energy depletion, air pollution, greenhouse emission and climate change. Recently, tremendous efforts have been devoted to this internationally focused area. Magnesium (Mg) is among the most promising candidates for this purpose and attracts numerous research interests. This paper is aiming at reviewing recent literatures on approaches and progress, the necessity of fur- ther research, and future direction to the research of Mg for hydrogen storage.
