Background:The mechanical properties of the cornea are complex and regionally *** paper uses an original method to investigate the biomechanics of the cornea in response to hydrostatic loading over the typical physiological range of intra-ocular pressure(IOP)fluctuations thereby increasing understanding of clinically relevant corneal biomechanical properties and their contributions to the refractive properties of the ***:Displacement speckle pattern interferometry(DSPI)was used to measure the total surface displacement of 40 porcine and 6 human corneal-scleral specimens in response to pressure variations up to 1 mmHg from a baseline of 16.5 *** specimens were mounted in a modified artificial anterior chamber(AAC)and loaded *** of high strain in response to loading were identified by comparing the displacements across different ***:The nature of the response of the corneal surface to loading demonstrated high regional topographic *** properties were shown to be asymmetrical,and deformation of the limbal and pre-limbal regions dominated these responses respectively with over 90%(N-T)and 60%(S-I)of the total maximum displacement occurring in these regions indicating *** contrast,the curvature of the central cornea remained relatively unchanged merely translating in ***:The limbal and pre-limbal regions of the cornea appear to be fundamental to the absorption of small pressure fluctuations facilitating the curvature of the central cornea to remain relatively *** differential mechanical properties of this region could have important implications for the application of corneal surgery and corneal crosslinking,warranting further investigation.

This paper addresses the question of how to support the designer with appropriate knowledge during conceptual design. It begins with a discussion of knowledge-based support for design and is followed by a scenario account of the use of a Knowledge Support System. A system is described that demonstrates interaction with different forms of knowledge in concept vehicle *** supports the creation of new designs by way of a solution generation and evaluation process that relies upon co-operation between the designer and the knowledge system. The results of user evaluation gave rise to a current research agenda which addresses the requirements of a multi-user platform for a design knowledge support environment for collaborative team work.

Heterogeneous template-induced nucleation is a promising way to regulate protein crystallization events and could be employed for purification processes and crystallographic *** crystallization process with graphite and graphene oxide,as heterogeneous templates,were *** than 640 hanging drops with different concentrations of Lysozyme(30,50,70,100 mg/mL)and NaCl(0.7,0.9,1.1,1.3,1.5 M)were crystallised at 4 ℃ with or without graphite/graphene oxide *** induction times and crystallization process were observed under the *** lysozyme in the solutions with graphite flakes nucleated faster under all the conditions than the lysozyme with equal experimental conditions without *** crystals preferred to grow around the edge of graphite flakes than on the flat *** the droplets with monolayer graphene oxide,more crystals appeared around gra-phene oxide particles,and the faster or slower nucleation processes with templates were dependent on the lysozyme and NaCl *** oxide templates strongly inhibited nucleation at high lysozyme concentrations but promoted nucleation at low lysozyme *** heterogeneous templates changed the crystal morphology and the crystallization *** crystals were observed in the solution with graphite templatesthan with graphene oxide templates and without any template.

Large eddy simulation of turbulent diffusion flame combustion using a conserved scalar methodology

The present paper describes an LES prediction of turbulent diffusion flame combustion in a simplifled axi-symmetric combustor *** calculations are carried out using a well-tested finite volume incompressible LES code which has been modified to handle variable density and reacting *** basic mixture fraction conserved scalar method *** with the chemical state relationships described by fast *** turbulence-chemistry interaction is modelled by a sub-grid PDF method and the PDF is assumed to follow a Beta-function *** LES predictions have been time-averaged over 3.5 flow-through times to generate the mean radial profiles of mixture fraction,product mass fraction,temperature,axial velocity and axial *** agreement of the LES predictions with the experimental data is good for all the above quantities at four different axial positions with largest differences at the first measurement *** LES method also provides information on the unsteady nature of turbulent diffusion *** turbulent reacting flows with large density ratio,it was found necessary to use a relaxation method in order to remove unphysical high-frequency fluctuations and to maintain numerical stability.

Agility has now been a main research topic in the l it erature. There is much written on agility mainly focusing on manufacturing p rocess and strategic processes. However, we argue that new product introduction should call for agility as well due to uncertainty about technological advances and customers’ demand. A technological superiority alone may not guarantee succe ss for new product introduction. We focus on the role of postponement for two ma in processes in new product introduction: new product development and new produc t launch. Postponement enables designers to incorporate the most current technol ogical advances and user needs as these co-evolve with the development process. Postponement can also significantly reduce risk associated with new product lau nch. It thus can be expected that postponement will be increasingly employed in new product introduction.

Nonlinear composite bilateral control framework for n-DOF teleoperation systems with disturbances

This paper proposes a new nonlinear composite bilateral control framework for n-degree-offreedom(n-DOF) teleoperation systems with external disturbances. Different with the existing methods which usually regard the dynamics of the master and slave robots as linear impedance models, the proposed control framework fully considers the nonlinear dynamics of the n-DOF teleoperation systems. Central to the proposed framework is the utilization of nonlinear disturbance observers for estimating the disturbances in master and slave robot systems. The nonlinear composite bilateral controller is constructed by incorporating the disturbance estimations into the nonlinear feedback linearization controller. The proposed control method guarantees satisfactory position tracking performance and desired remote force haptic simultaneously for the n-DOF teleoperation systems with external disturbances. The effectiveness of the proposed control framework is validated by its applications on 2-DOF teleoperation systems.
