In this paper we consider a retail service facility with cross-trained workers who can perform operations in both the front room and back room. Workers are brought from the back room to the front room and vice versa depending on the number of customers in the system. A loss of productivity occurs when a worker returns to the back room. Two problems are studied. In the first problem, given the number of workers available, we determine an optimal deterministic switching policy so that the expected number of customers in queue is minimized subject to a constraint ensuring that there is a sufficient workforce to fulfill the functions in the back room. In the second problem, the number of workers needed is minimized subject to an additional constraint requiring that the expected number of customers waiting in queue is bounded above by a given threshold value. Exact solution procedures are developed and illustrative numerical examples are presented.

The unending morbidity and mortality that results from cancer,as well as adverse reactions due to chemotherapy and the enormous economic burden of treatment and hospitalization,advocates for the necessity of chemopreventive *** chemoprevention refers to the use of agents capable of reversing,reducing,or slowing down the pathology of cancer at various ***,a few therapeutic drugs with relatively low toxicity(e.g.,tamoxifen,finasteride),and a sparse number of vaccines(hepatitis B,HPV),are used to prevent specific *** the general population,however,therapeutic options for cancer prevention are not ***,it is generally agreed that diet affects the genesis of cancer,and phytochemicals have the capacity of functioning as cancer chemoprevention *** is supported by epidemiological studies and clearly documented with animal models designed to mimic human ***,some public health strategies,such as recommendations for greater consumption of fruits and vegetables,reflect the merits of cancer ***,we focus on some well-established natural product cancer chemopreventive agents,including resveratrol(grapes),epigallocatechin-3-gallate(green tea),sulforaphane(cruciferous vegetables),anthocyanins(grapes and berries),curcumin(turmeric),silibinin(milk thistle),and lycopene(tomatoes).As aptly demonstrated by genomic analysis and other methods,the mechanistic underpinning is variable and *** addition,responses may be mediated through indirect mechanisms,such as interaction with the ***,ancillary applications of chemopreventive agents are worthy of consideration,such as management of sequelae induced by *** the loss of millions of cancer patients every year,it is obvious that negating malignant metastatic conditions remains of paramount *** meeting this objective,cancer chemoprevention offers great promise.

AIM:To examine effects of chronic methadone usage on bowel visualization,preparation,and repeat ***:In-patient colonoscopy reports from October,2004 to May,2009 for methadone dependent(MD) patients were retrospectively evaluated and compared to matched opioid naive controls(C).Strict criteria were applied to exclude patients with risk factors known to cause constipation or gastric *** reports of all eligible patients were analyzed for degree of bowel visualization,assessment of bowel preparation(good,fair,or poor),and whether a repeat colonoscopy was *** visualization was scored on a 4 point scale based on multiple prior studies:excellent = 1,good = 2,fair = 3,or poor = *** of variance(ANOVA) and Pearson χ 2 test were used for data *** analysis included correlation between methadone dose and colonoscopy *** variables significantly differing between MD and C groups were included in both univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses.P values were two sided,and < 0.05 were considered statistically ***:After applying exclusionary criteria,a total of 178 MD patients and 115 C patients underwent a colonoscopy during the designated study period.A total of 67 colonoscopy reports for MD patients and 72 for C were included for data *** and gender matched controls were randomly selected from this population to serve as controls in a numerically comparable *** average age for MD patients was 52.2 ± 9.2 years(range:32-72 years) years compared to 54.6 ± 15.5 years(range:20-81 years) for C(P = 0.27).Sixty nine percent of patients in MD and 65% in C group were males(P = 0.67).When evaluating colonoscopy reports for bowel visualization,MD patients had significantly greater percentage of solid stool(i.e.,poor visualization) compared to C(40.3% vs 6.9%,P < 0.001).Poor bowel preparation(35.8% vs 9.7%,P < 0.001) and need for repeat colonoscopy(32.8% vs 12.5%,P = 0.004)

Several studies have reported a relation between increased pro-inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α and apoptosis in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It is known that lipopoly-saccharide (LPS) treatment induces neuroinflammation and memory deterioration, and it has been reported that LPS induces apoptosis mostly through the production of TNF-α. Pentoxifylline (PTX), is a vascular protective agent and a potent TNF-alpha inhibitor. However, the molecular neuroprotective mechanisms of PTX against LPS-induced neurotoxicity have not been well studied. In this study, we investigated the direct protective effect of PTX against LPS-induced toxicity in Rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cell line. The results showed that a pretreatment with PTX prior exposure to LPS signifycantly decreased LPS-induced cell death. Mechanisms study showed that PTX has the potential to inhibit pro-inflammatory and pro-apoptotic pathways via the suppression of TNF-α and a caspase-dependent pathway in neuronal PC12 cells. This is the first study to report the anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects of PTX via inhibition of TNF-α and a caspase-dependent pathway in neuronal PC12 cells. Altogether, these observations indicate that PTX is capable of promoting neuroprotective effects, meanwhile also present some insights into the potential signaling pathways that are involved. Thus, these findings support the potential for PTX to be investigated as a potential agent for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as AD.

Dry reforming of methane(DRM) involves the conversion of carbon dioxide(CO_(2)) and methane(CH_(4)) into syngas(a mixture of hydrogen, H_(2), and carbon monoxide, CO), which can then be used to produce a wide range of products by means of Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. DRM has gained much attention as a means of mitigating damage from anthropogenic greenhouse gas(GHGs) emissions to the environment and instead utilizing these gases as precursors for value-added chemicals or to synthesize sustainable fuels and chemicals. Carbon deposition or coke formation, a primary cause of catalyst deactivation, has proven to be a major challenge in the development of DRM catalysts. The use of nickel-and cobalt-based catalysts has been extensively explored for DRM for their high activity and low cost but suffer from poor stability due to coke formation that has hindered their commercialization. Numerous articles have reviewed the various aspects of catalyst deactivation and strategies for mitigation, but few has focused on the benefit of bimetallic catalysts for mitigating coke formation. Bimetallic catalysts, often improve the catalytic stability over their monometallic counterparts due to synergistic effects resulting from two metal-tometal interactions. This review will cover DRM literature for various bimetallic catalyst systems, including the effect of supports and promoters, on the mitigation of carbonaceous deactivation.

INTRODUCTION Chest pain is a common chief complaint and encompasses nearly 5.2% of all patients seen in emergency departments(ED). In the United States, this accounts for approximately six million annual visits.[1-4]The evaluation of patients with chest pain in the ED is a time-consuming and challenging process because the physician must identify those with life-threatening cardiac chest pain, while avoiding unnecessary and costly evaluations of those with non-cardiac chest pain.
