Spinal cord injuries impose a notably economic burden on society,mainly because of the severe after-effects they *** the ongoing development of various therapies for spinal cord injuries,their effectiveness remains ***,a deeper understanding of metabolism has opened up a new therapeutic opportunity in the form of metabolic *** this review,we explore the metabolic changes that occur during spinal cord injuries,their consequences,and the therapeutic tools available for metabolic *** spinal cord metabolism is characterized by independent cellular metabolism and intercellular metabolic ***,spinal cord injury results in metabolic disorders that include disturbances in glucose metabolism,lipid metabolism,and mitochondrial *** metabolic disturbances lead to corresponding pathological changes,including the failure of axonal regeneration,the accumulation of scarring,and the activation of *** rescue spinal cord injury at the metabolic level,potential metabolic reprogramming approaches have emerged,including replenishing metabolic substrates,reconstituting metabolic couplings,and targeting mitochondrial therapies to alter cell *** available evidence suggests that metabolic reprogramming holds great promise as a next-generation approach for the treatment of spinal cord *** further advance the metabolic treatment of the spinal cord injury,future efforts should focus on a deeper understanding of neurometabolism,the development of more advanced metabolomics technologies,and the design of highly effective metabolic interventions.

A survey of knowledge about hepatitis B among new military recruits in China

Background: Hepatitis B is a disease that affects the liver and is caused by the hepatitis B virus(HBV). Hepatitis B is a serious public health problem in China. The objective of this study was to assess knowledge of and behaviours towards the transmission and prevention of hepatitis B of new military recruits in ***: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 800 new military recruits. A self-administered, structured questionnaire was used to collect information, and 727 questionnaires were returned completed. Analysis was performed using SPSS 18.0, and P<0.05 was considered statistically ***: Of the respondents, 665(91.5%) were male and 62(8.5%) were female. The mean age was 18.9±1.7 years. A total of 608 respondents(83.6%) demonstrated poor knowledge and 119(16.4%) adequate knowledge about HBV. Older age, female and higher education level were statistically associated with a higher mean knowledge score. Multivariate logistic regression showed that age(OR=3.040, 95%CI 1.724–5.359, P<0.001) and gender(OR=1.791, 95%CI 1.325–2.421, P<0.001) were significantly associated with appropriate behavioural practices towards prevention of ***: Against a backdrop of high HBV prevalence in China, new military recruits had poor knowledge of HBV. New recruits need better education about HBV to assist in reducing and preventing HBV infection.

Novel D-galactosamine-induced cynomolgus monkey model of acute liver failure

AIM To establish a simplified, reproducible D-galactosamineinduced cynomolgus monkey model of acute liver failure having an appropriate treatment window. METHODS Sixteen cynomolgus monkeys were randomly dividedinto four groups(A, B, C and D) after intracranial pressure(ICP) sensor implantation. D-galactosamine at 0.3, 0.25, 0.20 + 0.05(24 h interval), and 0.20 g/kg body weight, respectively, was injected via the small saphenous vein. Vital signs, ICP, biochemical indices, and inflammatory factors were recorded at 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96, and 120 h after D-galactosamine administration. Progression of clinical manifestations, survival times, and results of H&E staining, TUNEL, and Masson staining were recorded. RESULTS Cynomolgus monkeys developed different degrees of debilitation, loss of appetite, and jaundice after D-galactosamine administration. Survival times of groups A, B, and C were 56 ± 8.7 h, 95 ± 5.5 h, and 99 ± 2.2 h, respectively, and in group D all monkeys survived the 144-h observation period except for one, which died at 136 h. Blood levels of ALT, AST, CK, LDH, TBi L, Cr, BUN, and ammonia, prothrombin time, ICP, endotoxin, and inflammatory markers [(tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α, interleukin(IL)-1β, and IL-6)] significantly increased compared with baseline values in different groups(P liver cell necrosis that was positively correlated with the dose of *** We successfully established a simplified, reproducible D-galactosamine-induced cynomolgus monkey model of acute liver failure, and the single or divided dosage of 0.25 g/kg is optimal for creating this model.

Extrachromosomal DNA(ecDNA) is a form of circular DNA mostly found in tumor cells. Unlike the typical chromosomal DNA, ecDNA is circular, self-replicating, and carries complete or partial gene fragments. Although ecDNA occurrence remains a rare event in cancer, recent studies have shown that oncogene amplification on ecDNA is widespread throughout many types of cancer, implying that ecDNA plays a central role in accelerating tumor evolution. ecDNA has also been associated with increased tumor mutation burden, chromosomal instability, and even tumor microenvironment remodeling. ecDNA may be crucial in influencing tumor heterogeneity, drug sensitivity,oncogenic senescence, and tumor immunogenicity, leading to a worsening prognosis for tumor patients. In this way, several clinical trials have been conducted to investigate the importance of ecDNA in clinical treatment. In this review, we summarize the biogenesis, characteristics, and current research methods of ecDNA, discuss the vital role of ecDNA-caused tumor heterogeneity in cancers, and highlight the potential role of ecDNA in cancer therapy.

Hepatic stem cells: A viable approach for the treatment of liver cirrhosis

liver cirrhosis is characterized by distortion of liver architecture, necrosis of hepatocytes and regenerative nodules formation leading to cirrhosis. Various types of cell sources have been used for the management and treatment of decompensated liver *** of stem cells has offered a new dimension for regenerative therapy and has been considered as one of the potential adjuvant treatment modality in patients with end stage liver diseases(ESLD). Human fetal hepatic progenitor cells are less immunogenic than adult ones. They are highly propagative and challenging to cryopreservation. In our earlier studies we have demonstrated that fetuses at 10-18 wk of gestation age contain a large number of actively dividing hepatic stem and progenitor cells which possess bipotent nature having potential to differentiate into bile duct cells and mature hepatocytes. Hepatic stem cell therapy for the treatment of ESLD is in their early stage of the translation. The emerging technology of decellularization and recellularization might offer a significant platform for developing bioengineered personalized livers to come over the scarcity of desired number of donor organs for the treatment of ESLD. Despite these significant advancements long-term tracking of stem cells in human is the most important subject nowadays in order to answer several unsettles issues regarding the route of delivery, the choice of stem cell type(s), the cell number and the timepoint of cell delivery for the treatment in a chronic setting. Answering to these questions will further contribute to the development of safer, noninvasive, and repeatable imaging modalities that could discover better cell therapeutic approaches from bench to bedside. Combinatorial approach of decellularization and nanotechnology could pave a way towards the better understanding in determination of cell fate posttransplantation.

This article deals with analgesia by inhaling analgesic. According to Chinese medical theories, TCM analgesics were chosen from the literature and folk prescriptions screened and proved by analgesic tests on animals. A reasonable prescription was made up and the drug inhaled. Its analgesic effect was superior to that of dolantin injection (3 mg/ kg body weight, intraperitoneal injection). Clinical trials showed its analgesic effect in 3-10 minutes and it lasted for more than 2 hours in over 70% of the cases for a total effective rate of 94.6%. The drug is absorbed quickly and acts directly on the nerve center. Its use is not addictive.

Prevalence of liver injury among patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy in China

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of liver injury among patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS) who received highly active antiretroviral therapy(HAART) in rural Henan Province in China, and to explore whether Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) treatment based on HAART would increase this ***: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study. We collected medical information on patients with AIDS from two treatment databases in2014. Criteria established by the AIDS Clinical Trials Group in 1996 were used for grading liver injury,classified based on the limit of normal(ULN) for alanine transaminase and aspartate aminotransferase:grade 1(1.25-2.5 × ULN); grade 2(2.6-5 × ULN);grade 3(5.1-10 × ULN); and grade 4(> 10 × ULN).Factors associated with liver injury were evaluated using a logistic regression ***: A total 6953 patients with AIDS(3324 male and 3629 female patients) were enrolled into this study. The prevalence of liver injury was 22.0%(18.0% grade 1, 3.1% grade 2, 0.9% grade 3). In multivariate analysis, patients aged 34-45 years were more likely to have liver injury than patients in other age groups [adjusted odds ratio(AOR), 1.39; 95%CI, 1.01-1.91)]. Other factors associated with liver injury included male sex(AOR, 1.64; 95% CI,1.46-1.85), HIV infection via blood(AOR, 1.47; 95%CI, 1.19-1.82), hepatitis B virus antibody positive(AOR, 1.07; 95% CI, 0.85-1.36), and hepatitis C virus(HCV) antibody positive(AOR, 2.76; 95% CI,2.28-3.34).CONCLUSION: The prevalence of liver injury was relatively high among HAART-experienced patients. Several factors associated with liver injury included male sex, age 35-45 years old, HIV infection through blood, and concurrent HCV infection. TCM had no relationship with liver injury in patients receiving HAART.
