Source apportionment and ecological risk assessment of PAHs in surface sediments from the Liaodong Bay,northern China

The sources and ecological risk from sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface sediment in the Liaodong Bay were investigated from 2014 to *** total concentrations of PAHs ranged from 88.5 to 347.1 ng/g,and the high value occurred in the central region of the Liaodong *** analysis identified two site clusters representing the coastal region affected by land-based pollution and the central region of the Liaodong *** component analysis-multiple linear regression and diagnostic ratios suggested that PAHs contaminants originated from a mixture of combustion and petroleum sources,and the major was combustion *** on sediment quality guideline,naphthalene,acenaphthylene,acenaphthene,phenanthrene and dibenz[a,h]anthracene may occasionally cause adverse biological effects in some *** toxic equivalent concentrations of carcinogenic PAHs indicated low carcinogenic risk for the Liaodong *** ecological risk and toxic pollution levels of PAHs were higher in the central region than in the coastal region along the Liaodong Bay.

Colored dissolved organic matter(CDOM)is a crucial constituent that affects the optical absorption properties of *** to the relatively limited measured data on the spatial distribution characteristics of CDOM in the tropical eastern Indian Ocean,this study analyzes the optical absorption characteristics of CDOM in the southeast Indian Ocean using the data collected during four seasons from 2013 to *** work also systematically describes the seasonal horizontal and vertical distribution characteristics of CDOM in this area and conducts a preliminary analysis of the relevant factors affecting CDOM absorption characteristics in this *** indicate that the CDOM ag(440)during summer was remarkably lower than that in the coastal waters of Europe and coastal waters of China but slightly higher than that in the western and southeast *** spatial distribution of surface CDOM shows remarkable seasonal differences,and the spatial distribution characteristics of CDOM in the 5°S,92°E region differ between spring/summer and autumn/*** values of ag(400)and ag(440)are weak/strong at a surface/subsurface level of 100 m,with differences found between summer and *** correlation of CDOM with temperature,salinity,and chlorophyll-a concentration is relatively low,indicating that CDOM is an independent driving mechanism influenced by phytoplankton degradation,photobleaching,and water mixing.

Hexagrammos otakii is an important kind of economic fish species in East Asia. However, wild H. otakii resources have declined sharply in recent years as a result of human disturbance and habitat destruction. Thus, it is crucial to protect the current resources of H. otakii. In this study, 35 novel single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers were developed based on restriction-site associated DNA sequencing. The results showed that the observed heterozygosity and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.1875 to 0.6562 and 0.2679 to 0.5079, respectively. The minor allele frequency ranged from 0.1875 to 0.4375. Polymorphic information content ranged from 0.229 to 0.375. Six SNPs were found to be deviated significantly from the HWE (P H. otakii.

Taxonomic sufficiency(TS)refers to identifying taxa to a taxonomic level sufficient to detect community changes in stressed environments and may provide a cost-effective approach in routine monitoring ***,there is still limited information regarding the seasonal impact of applying TS and its implications for the ecological quality evaluation in the estuarine *** study investigated the relationship between the multivariate-AZTI’s Marine Biotic Index(M-AMBI)and environmental variables in three seasons(i.e.,spring,summer,and autumn)in the Liaohe River *** tested the reliability of TS for simplifying the M-AMBI *** results showed that family and genus level data could reproduce the spatial-temporal patterns of community structure at the species *** M-AMBI values showed a consistent spatial distribution pattern in all sampling seasons,with a decreasing trend with the increasing distance from the estuary *** genus and family level data performed nearly as well as species level in detecting the seasonal variations of pollutants(i.e.,nutrients and total organic content).The family level M-AMBI was feasible to discern stress in the Liaohe River Estuary because of the high aggregation ratios at different taxonomic levels in all sampling *** findings suggest that applying taxonomic sufficiency based on the M-AMBI provides an efficient approach for evaluating ecological quality in the Liaohe River Estuary.

Impact of seawater acidification on shell property of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum grown within and without sediment

Although the impact of ocean acidification on marine bivalves has been previously investigated under mainly controlled laboratory conditions,it is still unclear whether the impact of acidification on sediment-burrowing species differs between those within or without *** order to fill this gap in our knowledge,we compared shell properties of the infaunal Manila clam(Ruditapes philippinarum)exposed to three pH concentrations(7.4,7.7,and 8.0),within and without *** the first experiment(140 d),clams were exposed to seawater in an acidification system without sediment.A decrease in shell weight corresponding to the increase in dissolution rate was observed in the group ofpH 7.4,at which shell color disappeared or *** observations confirmed the changes of the external shell *** the second experiment(170 d),sediment was placed at the bottom of each exposure *** effects were found obvious in shell dissolution rate and shell color in the shell specimens exposed to overlying seawater but not found in the shell specimens exposed to *** the experimental period was longer in the second experiment,shell specimens in the first experiment were more seriously damaged than those in the second experiment under acidic seawater *** results,in relation to the defense function of the shell,show that marine bivalves in burrowing behavior are more adaptable to seawater acidification than those who do not burrow into sediment.

The infaunal polychaete Perinereis aibuhitensis Grube,distributed widely along Asian coasts and estuaries,is considered a useful animal model in ecotoxicological tests and a promising candidate in biomonitoring *** paper deals with the activities of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT),and glutathione peroxidases(GSH-Px) in infaunal polychaete *** exposed to a series of sublethal water-bound cadmium(Cd) concentrations(0,0.34,1.72,3.44,6.89,and 17.22 mg L-1) under a short-term exposure(1-8 d).The results indicate that the SOD and GSH-Px activities in *** are stimulated first and then renewed to the original *** CAT activity of worms decreases at an earlier exposure time but increases to the control values at a later exposure *** study suggests that Cd can interfere with the antioxidant defense system of ***,the changes in antioxidant enzyme activities for this species do not show the best promise as biomarkers in Cd biomonitoring of estuarine and coastal zones because weak or non-dose-effect relationships between the antioxidant enzymes activities and Cd levels are found.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） investigation in different matrices has been reported largely,whereas reports on snow samples were ***,as the main matrix in the polar region,has an important study *** in snow samples were analyzed to investigate the distribution and contamination status of them in the Antarctic,as well as to provide some references for global migration of *** samples collected in Fildes Peninsula were enriched and separated by solid-phase membrane disks and eluted by methylene dichloride,then quantified by gas chromatography/mass *** types of PAHs were detected except for Benzo（a）*** component analysis method was applied to characterize *** factors （Naphthalene,Fluorene and Phenanthrene） accounted for 60.57%,21.61% and 9.80%,*** results showed that the major PAHs sources maybe the atmospheric transportation,and the combustion of fuel in Fildes *** comparison of concentration and types of PAHs between accumulated snow and fresh snow showed that the main compound concentrations in accumulated snow samples were higher than those in fresh *** risk assessment indicated that the amount of PAHs in the snow samples would not lead to ecological risk.
