Who is at risk in the French mountains? Profiles of the accident victims in outdoor sports and mountain recreation

The risk of both severe and frequent injury associated with active pursuits in mountain areas is acknowledged. This phenomenon is all the most relevant to investigate in France that there is a growing enthusiasm for outdoor sports and recreation. This paper focuses on the social-demographic and sporting profiles of accident victims. Our intent is to better understand who is specifically at risk, while practicing mountain recreation, in the French mountains. Such identification doubtlessly constitutes an important asset in order to enhance prevention. Three critical activities are notably tackled, among some others: hiking, a widespread activity that exposes many practitioners to hazardous settings; mountaineering and ski touring, supposedly entailing the most severe *** order to align the information collected, then provide estimations based on the reasoned crossing of these secondary data, we consulted and summarised all the databases that we knew of on the French territory: rescue team intervention reports, aggregated statistics from the sports ministry, sporting federation accident declarations, avalanche experts statistics, mountain guides union accident/incident reports, healthcare facilities admissions, etc. Only the sources consideredto be the most reliable and representative were used, owing to the number of cases processed, the exhaustive nature of data collection, or the level of information detail available. Our method also included consultation of all the parties playing an active role in prevention, training and mountain rescue, thus ensuring a participative, co-constructive approach to the study with the people that have the best knowledge of victim profiles. Around fifty such parties were interviewed on the methods implemented, the benefits and limits of current data, and the main expectations in terms of accidentology progress, thus further enhancing the credibility of the study proposed in this paper. Monitoring stress and recovery states: Structural and external stages of the short version of the RESTQ sport in elite swimmers before championships

Background: Psychological stress and recovery monitoring is a key issue for increasing athletes' health, well-being, and performance. This multistudy report examined changes and the doseàresponse relationships between recoveryàstress psychological states, training load(TL), heart rate(HR), heart rate recovery(HRR), and heart rate variability(HRV) while providing evidence for the factorial validity of a short French version of the RecoveryàStress Questionnaire for Athletes(RESTQ-36-R-sport).Methods: Four hundred and seventy-three university athletes(Study 1), 72 full expert swimmers(Study 2), and 11 national to international swimmers(Study 3) participated in the study. Data were analyzed through confirmatory factor analyses(Study 1), repeated ANOVAs and correlational analyses(Study 2), t tests and correlational analyses(Study 3).Results: Multiple-group confirmatory factor analyses showed that the RESTQ-36-R-sport scores were partially invariant across gender, type of sport, and practice level(Study 1). A doseàresponse relationship was performed between TL and RESTQ-36-R-sport scores during an ecological training program(Study 2). Finally, relationships were found between physiological(HRR) and psychological(RESTQ-36-R-sport) states during an ecological tapering period leading to a national championship(Study 3).Conclusion: As a whole, these findings provided evidence for the usefulness of the short version of the RESTQ-36-R-sport for regular monitoring to prevent potential maladaptation due to intensive competitive sport practice.

Longitudinal trajectories of athlete burnout among young table tennis players: A 3-wave study

Purpose:The purposes of this study were to examine the trajectories of athlete burnout across a 2-month period characterized by high physical,psychological,and social demands to explore(1)whether several subgroups of athletes representing distinct burnout trajectories emerged from the analyses and(2)whether athlete burnout symptoms(reduced accomplishment,sport devaluation,and exhaustion)developed in tandem or whether some burnout dimensions predicted downstream changes in other dimensions(causal ordering model).Methods:One hundred and fifty-nine table tennis players in intensive training centers completed a self-reported athlete burnout measure across 3 time points within a 2-month period characterized by high *** were analyzed through latent class growth ***:Results of latent class growth analysis showed 3 distinct trajectories for each athlete burnout dimension,indicating not only linear or quadratic change but also stability in longitudinal athlete burnout *** also suggested that the 3 dimensions of athlete burnout did not develop in ***,the likelihood of belonging to particular emerging trajectories of sport devaluation and physical/emotional exhaustion was significantly influenced by the athletes’perception of reduced accomplishment assessed at Time ***,reduced accomplishment predicted downstream changes in the 2 other athlete burnout ***:As a whole,these results highlighted that the multinomial heterogeneity in longitudinal athlete burnout symptoms needs to be accounted for in future research.

L-theanine/α-Ketoglutarate/Nrf2 axis promotes exercise-mediated amelioration of NASH in mice

L-Theanine (LTA) is a non-protein amino acid mainly found in tea plants with many beneficial effects. Exercise exerts a wide range of benefits in metabolic health. Here， we show that exercise or gastric lavage intervention on mice with LTA improves diet-induced NASH in mice. Meanwhile， combinatory therapy shows that exercise and LTA synergistically improve obesity-related metabolic disorders and NASH phenotypes， including hepatic steatosis， inflammation， cell death and oxidative stress. In vivo studies indicate that LTA inhibits free fatty acid (FFA)-induced hepatocyte injury， including steatosis， oxidative stress and apoptosis. Knockdown of Nrf2 blunts the role of LTA in inhibiting FFA-induced hepatocyte oxidative stress and dysfunction. Mechanistically， LTA increases the α-ketoglutarate (α-KG) level in hepatocytes， which increases the transcription of Nrf2 by inducing active DNA demethylation on its promoter. Moreover， LTA promote the above α-KG/Nrf2 axis in synergy with exercise， thereby more efficiently inhibiting hepatic oxidative stress and ameliorating diet-induced NASH in mice. Our results suggest that， through promoting the α-KG/Nrf2 axis-mediated anti-oxidative pathway， the combination of LTA and exercise may provide an effective measure for the prevention and control of NASH.

Validity of a noninvasive estimation of deep body temperature when wearing personal protective equipment during exercise and recovery

Background:Deep body temperature is a critical indicator of heat ***,direct measures are often invasive,costly,and difficult to implement in the *** study assessed the agreement between deep body temperature estimated from heart rate and that measured directly during repeated work bouts while wearing explosive ordnance disposal(EOD)protective clothing and during ***:Eight males completed three work and recovery periods across two separate *** consisted of treadmill walking on a 1%incline at 2.5,4.0,or 5.5 km/h,in a random order,wearing EOD protective *** temperature and relative humidity were maintained at 24℃and 50%[Wet bulb globe temperature(WBGT)(20.9±1.2)℃]or 32℃and 60%[WBGT(29.0±0.2)℃]on the separate days,*** rate and gastrointestinal temperature(TGI)were monitored continuously,and deep body temperature was also estimated from heart rate(ECTemp).Results:The overall systematic bias between TGI and ECTemp was 0.01℃with 95%limits of agreement(Lo A)of±0.64℃and a root mean square error of 0.32℃.The average error statistics among participants showed no significant differences in error between the exercise and recovery periods or the environmental *** TGI levels of(37.0–37.5)℃,(37.5–38.0)℃,(38.0–38.5)℃,and>38.5℃,the systematic bias and±95%Lo A were(0.08±0.58)℃,(–0.02±0.69)℃,(–0.07±0.63)℃,and(–0.32±0.56)℃,***:The findings demonstrate acceptable validity of the ECTemp up to 38.5℃.Conducting work within an ECTemp limit of 38.4℃,in conditions similar to the present study,would protect the majority of personnel from an excessive elevation in deep body temperature(>39.0℃).

Evidence in Support of Analogical Reasoning Improvements with Executive Attention Intervention in Healthy Young Adults

Analogical reasoning improvement is important in educational outcome *** by recent ideas and evidence,we applied anti-saccade task training as an executive attention intervention and tested whether it could improve analogical reasoning performance.A serial-task paradigm was applied where participants performed an anti-saccade followed by an analogical reasoning task including a perception *** experimental group finished the anti-saccade task in which the ratio of anti-saccade trials to pro-saccade trials was 5:1 while the counterpart was 1:1 in the active control ***,a blank control group was established where participants merely finished the analogical reasoning ***-related electroencephalographic(EEG)data were recorded when participants were performing the executive attention and analogical reasoning *** addition,their resting state EEG was collected before and after the executive attention ***,the experimental group reacted significantly faster than the other two groups in analogical reasoning but not in *** the neural level,in the experimental group alone,the anti-saccade trials elicited a smaller N2 than pro-saccade trials and the resting alpha power was improved after executive attention *** significant difference in P2 was found between the two groups in analogical reasoning or perception but the experimental group showed a larger late positive component than the active control group in analogical *** also found that the late positive component mediated the relationship between the N2 of anti-saccade trials and analogical reasoning reaction times in the experimental *** further discussed the role of executive attention in the analogical reasoning process,which may pave the way for the future reliable improvement of fluid intelligence.

Effect of Taijiquan practice versus wellness education on knee pro-prioception in patients with knee osteoarthritis:a randomized con-trolled trial

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of Taijiquan practice on knee proprioception in patients with knee osteoarthritis(OA).METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial comparing Taijiquan with a control condition(wellness education) in patients with knee OA. The patients participated in either a 60-min Taijiquan session three times weekly or a 60-min weekly educational session, for 24 consecutive weeks. The primary outcomes were changes in knee proprioception. Secondary outcomes were changes in the Western Ontario and Mc Master University Osteoarthritis Index(WOMAC).RESULTS: After 24 weeks, compared with the control group, the Taijiquan group demonstrated better improvements in the joint position sense in knee flexion(left:-2.12°; right:-2.02°), and knee extension(left:-2.22°; right:-1.54°). In addition,the Taijiquan group showed significantly greater improvements in the WOMAC scores(P < 0.05) for knee pain(left:-3.17 points; right:-3.74 points),stiffness(left:-2.43 points; right:-2.13 points),and physical function(left:-10.99 points; right:-8.00 points), compared with the control ***: A 24-week Taijiquan practice resulted in a significant improvement in knee proprioception in patients with knee OA. The present findings add increasing evidence regarding the clinical benefits of Taijiquan as a therapeutic modality for patients to improve the reflex protection of knee joints against potentially harmful forces.
