Comparison of epidemiological and clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients with and without Wuhan exposure history in Zhejiang Province,China

Background:A novel coronavirus called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2),first identified in Wuhan,China,has been rapidly spreading around the *** study investigates the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)patients in Zhejiang Province who did or did not have a history of Wuhan ***:We collected data from medical records of confirmed COVID-19 patients in Zhejiang Province from Jan.17 to Feb.7,2020 and analyzed epidemiological,clinical,and treatment data of those with and without recorded recent exposure in ***:Patients in the control group were older than those in the exposure group((48.19±16.13)years vs.(43.47±13.12)years,P<0.001),and more were over 65 years old(15.95%control vs.5.60%exposure,P<0.001).The rate of clustered onset was also significantly higher in the control group than in the exposure group(31.39%vs.18.66%,P<0.001).The symptom of a sore throat in patients in the exposure group was significantly higher than that in the control group(17.30%vs.10.89%,P=0.01);however,headache in the exposure group was significantly lower than that in the control group(6.87%vs.12.15%,P=0.015).More patients in the exposure group had a significantly lower level of lactate dehydrogenase(LDH)and aspartate aminotransferase(AST)than those in the control *** was no significant difference in any degree of COVID-19 including mild,severe,and critical between the two ***:From the perspective of epidemiological and clinical characteristics,there was no significant difference between COVID-19 patients with and without Wuhan exposure history.

nonalcoholic fatty liver disease （NAFLD） is the most common liver disease in the world today. Its incidence in adults and children is rising rapidly due to the ongoing epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Hence, it has become a global public health issue. Envi- ronmental factors have been found to play a major role in the etiology of NAFLD, especially for genetically susceptible populations. Among these, one of the most important factors is junk food, especially the typical ＂Western-style＂ diet rich in simple carbohydrates, saturated fat, and highly processed food materials. Genetic predisposition to NAFLD does occur; however, a precise definition of genetic factors responsible for NAFLD is still lacking. Specific variants of different genes have been shown to present a risk for NAFLD. Genetic studies might be helpful in the management of the disease by developing novel treatment strategies based on individual＇s genotype.

Delayed peripheral treatment with neurotrophin-3 improves sensorimotor recovery after central nervous system injury

Neurotrophin-3 (NT3) is a growth factor found in many body tissues including the heart, intestines, skin, nervous system and in skeletal muscles including muscle spindles (Murase et al., 1994). NT3 is required for the survival, correct connectivity and function of sensory (“proprioceptive”) afferents that innervate muscle spindles;these neurons express receptors for NT3 including tropomyocin receptor kinase C. These proprioceptive afferents are important for normal movement (Boyce and Mendell, 2014) and signals from muscle spindles are important for recovery of limb movement (e.g., after spinal cord lateral hemisection)(Takeoka et al., 2014). The level of NT3 declines in most tissues during postnatal development;its level is low in adult and elderly humans and other mammals (Murase et al., 1994). Elevation of NT3 has been shown to improve outcome in various animal models of neurological disease and injury. For example, many groups have shown that delivery of NT3 directly into the central nervous system promotes recovery after spinal cord injury but this often involved invasive routes or gene therapy (Boyce and Mendell, 2014;Petrosyan et al., 2015;Wang et al., 2018).

Ruthenium-106 plaque brachytherapy for the treatment of diffuse choroidal hemangioma in Sturge-Weber syndrome

AIM:To evaluate the efficacy of ruthenium-106 plaque brachytherapy for the treatment of diffuse choroidal hemangioma(DCH)in Sturge-Weber syndrome(SWS).METHODS:A total of 8 patients with DCH in SWS managed with plaque brachytherapy were retrospectively *** were treated with ruthenium-106 plaque therapy(median apex dose:83 Gy)at the thickest tumor *** follow-up,we recorded the tumor thickness,the best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA),subretinal fluid(SRF)status,and complications following ***:At a median follow-up of 43 mo,tumor regression was observed in all cases,with a complete resolution of SRF and reduction in *** radiation complications were recorded during the follow up ***:Ruthenium-106 plaque therapy to the thickest portion of the tumor seems to be a useful treatment in patients with DCH in SWS.

Astrocytes(ASTs)and oligodendroglial lineage cells(OLGs)are major macroglial cells in the central nervous *** communicate with each other through connexin(Cx)and Cx-based network structures,both of which allow for quick transport of nutrients and ***,ASTs interact with OLGs through connexin(Cx)-mediated networks to modulate various physiological processes in the *** this article,following a brief description of the infrastructural basis of the glial networks and exocrine factors by which ASTs and OLGs may crosstalk,we focus on recapitulating how the interactions between these two types of glial cells modulate myelination,and how the AST-OLG interactions are involved in protecting the integrity of the blood-brain barrier(BBB)and regulating synaptogenesis and neural *** studies further suggest that AST-OLG interactions are associated with myelin-related diseases,such as multiple sclerosis.A better understanding of the regulatory mechanisms underlying AST-OLG interactions may inspire the development of novel therapeutic strategies for related brain diseases.

Synthesis of Self-assemble pH-responsive Cyclodextrin Block Copolymer for Sustained Anticancer Drug Delivery

Well-defined pH-responsive poly（e-caprolactone）-graft-β-cyclodextrin-graft-poly（2-（dimethylamino）ethyl- methacrylate）-co-poly（ethylene glycol） methacrylate amphiphilic copolymers （PCL-g-β-CD-g-P（DMAEMA-co-PEGMA）） were synthesized using a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization （ATRP）, ring opening polymerization （ROP） and ＂click＂ chemistry. Successful synthesis of polymers was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR）, proton nuclear magnetic resonance （^1H-NMR）, and gel permeation chromatography （GPC）. Then, the polymers could self- assemble into micelles in aqueous solution, which was demonstrated by dynamic light scattering （DLS） and transmission electron microscopy （TEM）. The pH-responsive self-assembly behavior of these copolymers in water was investigated at different pH values of 7.4 and 5.0 for controlled doxorubicin （DOX） release, and these results revealed that the release rate of DOX could be effectively controlled by altering the pH, and the release of drug loading efficiency （DLE） was up to 88% （W/W）. CCK-8 assays showed that the copolymers had low toxicity and possessed good biodegradability and biocompatibility, whereas the DOX-loaded micelles remained with high cytotoxicity for HeLa cells. Moreover, confocal laser scanning microscopy （CLSM） images revealed that polymeric micelles could actively target the tumor site and the efficient intracellular DOX release from polymeric micelles toward the tumor cells further confirmed the anti-tumor effect. The DOX-loaded micelles could easily enter the cells and produce the desired pharmacological action and minimize the side effect of free DOX. These results successfully indicated that pH-responsive polymeric micelles could be potential hydrophobic drug delivery carriers for cancer targeting therapy with sustained release.

A case of bowel schitosomiasis not adhering to endoscopic findings

Schistosomiasis is a chronic worm infection caused by a species of trematodes, the Schistosomes. We may distinguish a urinary form from Schistosomes haematobium and an intestinal-hepatosplenic form mainly from Schistosomes mansonicharacterized by nausea, meteorism, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea,rectal tenesmus, and hepatosplenomegaly. These infections represent a major health issue in Africa,Asia, and South America, but recently S mansoni has increased its prevalence in other countries, such as Europe countries and USA, due to international travelers and immigrants, with several diagnostic and prevention problems. We report a case of a 24-yearold patient without HIV infection, originated from Ghana, admitted for an afebrile dysenteric *** microbiologic studies were negative and colonoscopy revealed macroscopic lesions suggestive of a bowel inflammatory chronic disease. Since symptoms became worse, a therapy with mesalazine (2 g/d) was started,depending on the results of a bowel biopsy, but without any resolution. The therapy was stopped after 2 wk when the following result was available: a diagnosis of"intestinal schistosomiasis" was done (two Schistosoma eggs were detected in the colonic mucosa) and this was confirmed by the detection of Schistosoma eggs in the feces. Therapy was therefore changed to praziquantel(40 mg/kg, single dose), a specific anti-parasitic agent,with complete recovery. Schistosomiasis shows some peculiar difficulties in terms of differential diagnosis from the bowel inflammatory chronic disease, as the two disorders may show similar colonoscopic *** this infection has recently increased its prevalence worldwide, it was considered in the differential diagnosis of our patient with gastrointestinal symptoms.
