Prevalence and co-infections of schistosomiasis/hepatitis B and C viruses among school children in an endemic areas in Taiz,Yemen

Objective:To determine the disease prevalence and its relationship with hepatitis B and C viruses among school children in five endemic areas by ***:During June 2007 and March 2009,1 484 school children aged between 5-16 years participated in the current study from 32 basic schools in five districts(Al-Dhabab,Hedran,Warazan,Al-Barh and Al-Shmaytin) in Taiz Governorate,Republic of *** of school children who participated in the study;1 406 stool samples,1 484 urine samples and 214 blood samples were collected and ***:Schistosoma mansoni(***) was found in all the studied areas except ***,Schistosoma haematobium(***) was recorded only in Al-Shmaytin and *** *** and *** were observed in Al-Shmaytin *** overall prevalence was 20.76%for *** and 7.41%for ***. The prevalence rate of infection among males was higher than females,shwing no significant *** of light,moderate and heavy infections in the case of *** were 41.78%, 25.34%and 32.87%***,for *** it was 50.90%for light infection and 49.09%for heavy *** to the prevalence of viral hepatitis among infected school children with schistosomiasis,it could be noticed that hepatitis B virus was higher than the prevalence of hepatitis C ***,the presence of HBsAg and anti-HCV was not associated with Schistosoma ***:Schistosomiasis infection is an important public health problem in Taiz Governorate,Republic of *** was a correlation between S. haematobium and hepatitis B,but no association between *** infections and hepatitis B and C viruses.

A case of human infection with a novel Babesia species in China

Background:Babesiosis is an uncommon but emerging tick-borne disease caused by the genus *** this case study,we report a case of human infection with a novel Babesia *** ***:The patient in question had been suffering from repetitive occurrences of mild fever of unknown origin and fatigue for 10 *** forms,tetrads,and one or two dots of chromatin or trophozoite-like organisms were observed in the patient’s thin blood smears and bone marrow *** a confocal laser-scanning microscope,it was observed that the patient’s serum had reactivity with the surface proteins of the *** *** microscopy revealed oval red blood cells with 1~2μm of knob protrusions in the cellular *** results of the Babesia-specific nested PCR assay for 18S rRNA confirmed the presence of Babesia *** construction of a phylogenetic relationship showed clustering with *** and ***,which was identified as a novel Babesia species and named as Babesia ***/***,doxycycline,and moxifloxacin hydrochloride were shown to relieve symptoms but were not as effective after continuous *** atovaquone(Mepron®)administration,the patient recovered from fever and tested negative for detection of Babesia-specific ***:Babesia ***/HangZhou is a novel Babesia species,which causes mild babesiosis in an immunocompetent patient.

A case of pulmonary coinfection by Strongyloides stercoralis and Pneumocystis jiroveci has been detected in an AIDS patient treated in the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit of the Muniz *** diagnosis,the patient presented cough with mucopurulent expectoration,dyspnea,fever,bilateral pulmonary infiltrates on the chest X-ray,negative bacilloscopy for acid fast bacteria and a CD4^+ T lymphocytes count of 52 cells/μ *** microbiological diagnosis was achieved by microscopic observation of the respiratory secretions obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage,while the wet mount examination revealed rhabditiform and filariform larvae of the nematode and foamy exudates,pathognomonic of the pulmonary *** was the unique case of this association among about 3 000 samples performed in our laboratory in the last 10 years and diagnosed by *** complementary stains(a rapid modification of Grocott,Kinyoun and Giemsa) were applied to the smears after the diagnosis of mycotic and parasitary infections achieved by fresh *** physicians and microbiologists should take into account the possible coexistence of respiratory pathogens in immunocompromised patients,such as those with AIDS.

Background:Strongyloidiasis,a neglected disease caused by intestinal nematodes of the genus,is endemic to tropical and subtropical areas such as *** methods only identify the genus,while DNA-molecular techniques are susceptible in Strongyloides *** study aims to determine the prevalence of dominant Strongyloides species among the population in Duc Hoa district,Long An,***:A cross-sectional study used 1190 stool specimens collected from July 2017 to November *** samples were transported within 2 h,stored at 2-8℃,and processed within 48 h for microscopy smear and culture at the laboratory of Medical parasitology,Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine(PNT).Then all positive samples with the above 2 methods were verified by real-time PCR ***-time PCR amplification was conducted at the laboratory of Molecular Biology,***:Direct microscopy and modified Harada-Mori culture detected Strongyloides *** in 79/1190 sam-ples(6.6%).About 94.2%of the DNA samples were Strongyloides stercoralis,2.9%were co-infections with Strongy-loides ratti and ***,and 2.9%were patients with *** identity of 12/14 sequences was confirmed as *** with a high level of similarity(91.3%-100%)and over 98%for ***:DNA-molecular techniques and sequence analysis are highly suitable for identifying Strongyloides species isolated from stool *** is remarkable evidence of the presence of zoonosis *** disease in human,not just the known *** is likely to result in a certain proportion of people being infected by this animal-borne infectious pathogen.

Detection of Trypanosoma spp. in Bandicota indica from the Thai-Myanmar border area, Mae Sot District Tak Province, Thailand

Objective:To investigate the prevalence of trypanosome infection and their phylogeny in Bandicota indica rats from the cadmium-contaminated area of Mae Sot and the Myanmar ***:Blood samples were taken from 100 animals,and parasite infection was examined by light microscopy observation and polymerase chain reaction(PCR)***:Trypanosoma *** was found in 20%of the thin blood smear *** showed positive 623 bp DNA bands in 21 samples(21%).The sequencing analysis showed that all of the samples(100%)had the Trypanasoma lewisi 18 S ribosomal RNA *** analysis confirmed that these 16 isolates of Trypanosoma *** closely related to Trypanasoma ***:Molecular detection using PCR is as effective as conventional light microscopy *** study confirms that trypanosomal infection in rodents is still high;therefore,fleas as their vectors need to be controlled in order to prevent transmission to humans.

Aim:To determine the effect of saposin C (a known trophic domain of prosaposin) on proliferation,migration and invasion,as well as its effect on the expression of urokinase plasmonogen activator (uPA),its receptor (uPAR) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and -9 in normal and malignant prostate *** addition,we tested whether saposin C can activate p42/44 and stress-activated protein kinase/c-Jun NH_2-terminal kinase (SAPK/JNK) signal transduction pathways of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) ***:We employed West- ern blot analysis,phospho-specific antibodies,cell proliferation assay,reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, in vitro kinase assays and migration and invasion to determine the effect of saposin C on various biological behaviors of prostate stromal and cancer ***:Saposin C,in a cell type-specific manner,upregulates uPA/uPAR and immediate early gene c-Jun expression,stimulates cell proliferation,migration and invasion and activates p42/44 and SAPK/JNK MAPK pathways in prostate stromal and cancer *** prostate epithelial cells were not responsive to saposin C treatment in the above ***:Saposin C functions as a multipotential modulator of diverse biological activities in prostate cancer and stromal *** results strongly suggest that saposin C functions as a potent growth factor for prostatic cells and may contribute to prostate carcinogenesis and/or the development of hormone-refractory prostate cancer.

Artesunate inhibits growth and induces apoptosis in human osteosarcoma HOS cell line in vitro and in vivo

This paper aims to investigate the effects of artesunate (ART) on growth and apoptosis in human osteosarcoma HOS cell line in vitro and in vivo and to explore the possible underlying *** viability was measured by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) *** induction of apoptosis was detected by light and transmission electron microscopy and flow *** blot analysis was used to investigate the related *** mice were further employed to investigate the antitumour activity of ART in *** assay results demonstrated that ART selectively inhibits the growth of HOS cells in a dose-and time-dependent *** on the findings of light and transmission electron microscopy,Hoechst 33258 staining,and fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-annexin V staining,the cytotoxicity of ART in HOS cells occurs through *** ART treatment,cytosolic cytochrome c was increased,Bax expression was gradually upregulated,Bcl-2 expression was downregulated,and caspase-9 and caspase-3 were ***,the intrinsic apoptotic pathway may be involved in ART-induced *** cycle analysis by flow cytometry indicated that ART may induce cell cycle arrest at G2 /M *** nude mice bearing HOS xenograft tumours,ART inhibited tumour growth and regulated the expressions of cleaved caspase-3 and survivin,in agreement with in vitro *** has a selective antitumour activity against human osteosarcoma HOS cells,which may be related to its effects on induction of apoptosis via the intrinsic *** results suggest that ART is a promising candidate for the treatment of osteosarcoma.
