A bstract Cadmium(Cd) is one of the most common and widespread heavy metals in the environment. Cd has adverse effects on photosynthesis that are countered by photosystem I(PSI) and photosystem II(PSII); however, the protective responses of these photosystems to heavy metal stress remain unclear. Using the model diatom P haeodactylum tricornutum, a biological indicator that is widely used to assess the impact of environmental toxins, we simultaneously measured the effects of Cd on PSI and PSII and examined the levels of pigments in response to high light treatments before and after Cd exposure. Cd significantly reduced the quantum yield and electron transport rates of PSI and PSII. The quantum yield of non-photochemical energy dissipation in PSI due to donor side limitation increased faster than the quantum yield due to acceptor side limitation. The Cd treatment activated the P. tricornutum xanthophyll cycle under artificial light conditions, as indicated by an increased diatoxanthin content. Xanthophyll is important for photoprotection; therefore, the accumulation of diatoxanthin may down-regulate PSII activities to reduce oxidative damage. Together, our results suggest that the rapid reduction in PSII activities following Cd exposure is an adaptive response to heavy metal stress that reflects the variable exposure to external stressors in the native P. tricornutum environment.

The transformer-2(tra-2) gene plays a key role in the regulatory hierarchy of sexual differentiation in somatic tissues and in the germline of Drosophila *** this study,sequences and expression profiles of tra-2 in the Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis were *** tra-2 isoforms,designated as Estra-2a,Estra-2b,Estra-2c,and Estra-2d,were *** all contained an RNA-recognition motif(RRM) and a linker region,which shared high similarity with other reported *** analysis revealed that Estra-2a,Estra-2b and Estra-2c are encoded by the same genomic locus and are generated by alternative splicing of the *** with the other three isoforms,Estra-2d lacks the RS2 *** real-time PCR showed that all four isoforms were highly expressed in the fertilized egg,and in the 2-4 cell and blastula stages compared with larval stages(P<0.01),suggesting their maternal origin in early embryonic developmental ***,Estra-2a was highly expressed in male somatic tissues,while Estra-2c was significantly highly expressed in the *** results suggest that Estra-2c is involved in sexual differentiation of the Chinese mitten *** findings provide basic information for further functional studies of the tra-2 gene/protein in this species.

In crab, embryogenesis is a complicated developmental program marked by a series of critical events. RNA-Sequencing technology offers developmental biologists a way to identify many more developmental genes than ever before. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of the transcriptomes of Eriocheir sinensis oosperms （Os） and embryos at the 2-4, cell stage （Cs）, which are separated by a cleavage event. Atotal of 18 923 unigenes were identified, and 403 genes matched with gene ontology （GO） terms related to developmental processes. In total, 432 differentially expressed genes （DEGs） were detected between the two stages. Nine DEGs were specifically expressed at only one stage. These DEGs may be relevant to stage-specific molecular events during development. A number of DEGs related to ＇hedgehog signaling pathway＇, ＇Wnt signaling pathway＇＇germplasm＇, ＇nervous system＇, ＇sensory perception＇ and ＇segment polarity＇ were identified as being up-regulated at the Cs stage. The results suggest that these embryonic developmental events begin before the early cleavage event in crabs, and that many of the genes expressed in the two transeriptomes might be maternal genes. Our study provides ample information for further research on the molecular mechanisms underlying crab development.

We report a molecular dynamics study of structural and transport properties of liquid nickel under high pres- sures. Pressure dependencies of pair distribution function and pair correlation entropy along the melting line indicate that the configuration change along melting lines decreases with increasing pressure. The calculated diffusion coefficients and viscosity by using entropy-scaling laws with modified parameters and ideal parameters are compared with those extracted from mean-square displacement or the Stokes-Einstein relation. The results suggest that the entropy-scaling laws hold well for coefficients and viscosity increase moderately with liquid nickel under high-pressure conditions, and the diffusion pressure along melting lines.

Platymonas (Tetraselmis) subcordiformis is a unicellular marine green alga. It was found to be very sensitive to the herbicide Basta through a sensitivity test indicating it could be employed as a selective agent. The bar gene is a practicable and selectable marker gene. The vector containing the expression cassette of the bar gene was transferred to P. subcordiformis by both particle bombardment and glass-bead agitation and transformants were then selected using Basta. Finally, Southern blotting analysis indicated that the bar gene had been successfully integrated into the nuclear genome of P. subcordiformis using both of the transgenic techniques, with the transformation efficiency of the glass-bead method being slightly higher than that of particle bombardment. This is the first report on stable transformation of P. subcordiformis, and will improve fundamental research and enlarge application of this alga.

AIM: To identify predictors of sustained virological response in hemodialysed patients treated by PEGinterferon α for chronic hepatitis C, genotype ***: The sustained virological response(SVR) rate, IL28 B genotype, IFNL4 genotype, initial viral load(IVL) and other pretreatment variables in 39 endstage renal disease patients(ESRD) on maintenance haemodialysis(HD) infected with hepatitis C virus(HCV), genotype 1b, were compared with a control group of 109 patients with normal kidney function treated within the same period. All the patients were treatment nave and had well compensated liver disease. The ESRD patients received 135 μg of PEGylated interferon α-2a(Peg IFN-α) weekly and a reduced dose of ribavirin(RBV) was administered to 23/39 patients with an initial haemoglobin level > 10 g/d L. Control group patients were given standard doses of Peg IFN-α and RBV. SVR was assessed as HCV RNA negativity 24 wk post-treatment. A t-test or ANOVA were used for comparisons of the means and a χ2 testcompared the *** regression was used to determine significant predictors of *** values for continuous variables were obtained from Receiver Operating Characteristic ***:The distribution of IL28B rs12979860 CC,CT and TT genotypes in the ESRD group was 28.2%,64.1%and 7.7%,respectively,and 19.3%,62.4%and18.3%in the *** IFNL4 genotype was in almost absolute linkage disequlibrium with *** proportion of patients with a low IVL(<600000 IU/m L)was significantly higher in the ESRD group than in the controls(28/39,71.8%vs 51/109,46.8%,P=0.009),as was the proportion of patients with low IVL in IL28B CC carriers compared with non-CC carriers in the ESRD group(10/11,90.9%vs 18/28,64.3%,P=0.0035).This difference was not found in the controls(7/22,31.8%vs 44/87,50.6%,P=0.9).The overall SVR rate was 64.1%(25/39)in the ESRD group and 50.5%(55/109)in the control group(P=0.19).11/11(100%)and 19/22(86.4%)IL28B CC patients achieved SVR in the

Seven compounds (1–7) were identified from the cultivation of the endophytic fungus Exophiala oligosperma (EN-21) that was isolated from the inner tissue of the marine red alga Laurencia similis. Their structures were identified with spectroscopic and chemical methods as 2-phenoxynaphthalene (1), (2S, 3R, 4E, 8E)-1-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-3-hydroxy-2-[(R)-2′-hydroxyoctadecanoyl] amino-9-methyl-4, 8-octadeca-diene (2), (22E,24R)-ergosta-7,22-dien-3β,5α,6β-triol (3), (22E, 24R)-3β, 5α, 9α-trihydroxy- ergosta-7, 22-dien-6-one (4), (22E, 24R)-5α, 6α-epoxy-ergosta-8, 22-dien-3β, 7α-diol (5), (22E, 24R)- ergosta-4, 6, 8(14), 22-tetraen-3-one (6), and euphorbol (7). This paper reports for the first time the chemical constituents of fungus Exophiala oligosperma and the discovery of compound 1 as a natural product from the fungus.

We report on the intriguing electrical transport properties of compressed CaF2 nanocrystals. The diffusion coefficient, grain and grain boundary resistances vary abnormally at about 14.37 GPa and 20.91 GPa, corresponding to the beginning and completion of the Fm3m-Pnma structural transition. Electron conduction and ion conduction coexist in the transport process and the electron conduction is dominant. The electron transference number of the Fm3m and Pnma phases increases with pressure increasing. As the pressure rises, the F ion diffusion and electronic transport processes in the Fm3m and Pnma phases become more difficult. Defects at grains play a dominant role in the electronic transport process.
