The pygmy marmoset,the smallest of the anthropoid primates,has a broad distribution in Western *** studies using molecular and morphological data have identified two distinct species separated by the Napo and Solimoes-Amazonas ***,reconciling this new biological evidence with current taxonomy,i.e.,two subspecies,Cebuella pygmaea pygmaea(Spix,1823)and Cebuella pygmaea niveiventris(Lönnberg,1940),was problematic given the uncertainty as to whether Spix’s pygmy marmoset(Cebuella pygmaea pygmaea)was collected north or south of the Napo and Solimoes-Amazonas rivers,making it unclear to which of the two newly revealed species the name pygmaea would ***,we present the first molecular data from Spix’s type specimen of Cebuella pygmaea,as well as novel mitochondrial genomes from modern pygmy marmosets sampled near the type locality(Tabatinga)on both sides of the *** these data,we can confirm the correct names of the two species identified,i.e.,*** for animals north of the Napo and Solimoes-Amazonas rivers and *** for animals south of these two *** analyses of the novel genetic data placed into the context of cytochrome b gene sequences from across the range of pygmy marmosets further led us to reevaluate the geographical distribution for the two Cebuella *** dated the split of these two species to 2.54 million years *** discuss additional,more recent,subdivisions within each lineage,as well as potential contact zones between the two species in the headwaters of these rivers.

Objective::Prenatal infection with the Zika virus (ZIKV) can lead to congenital Zika syndrome (CZS), characterized by microcephaly and brain injury. However, there are questions regarding the prevalence of microcephaly/CZS after the ZIKV outbreak in defined geographic areas. This study aimed to identify adverse outcomes in live births of fetuses exposed in utero to the ZIKV, compared to unexposed births, as well as maternal sociodemographic, delivery, and birth ***::Here, we conducted a cross-sectional observational study to investigate the characteristics of all live births in the city of Tangará da Serra, Mato Grosso, Brazil, in 2016, after the outbreak of ZIKV infection in late 2015. All live births of children to women residing in the municipality of Tangará da Serra between January 1 and december 31, 2016, were evaluated, and head circumference was measured at birth and after 24 hours. Children born with microcephaly or a maternal history of confirmed or suspected prenatal ZIKV infection were evaluated by a multidisciplinary team. The outcomes of the exposed and non-exposed children were compared. Prevalence ratios and their respective 95% confidence intervals were calculated for sociodemographic, delivery, and live birth ***::Of 1,441 live births, 106 (7.3%) were from mothers with confirmed or highly probable exposure to ZIKV. The prevalence of severe congenital microcephaly (41.7/10,000) in Tangará da Serra in 2016 was ten-fold higher than that in Latin America before ***::This study may serve as a model to investigate possible outbreaks of infections in a defined geographical space in the future.

Cigarette smoking is the main cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Diaphragm injury is observed in patients with COPD. However, the potential role of smoking in triggering or perpetuating muscle injury is unknown. The present study was aimed at evaluating the potential role of commercial tobacco smoke as a direct cause of skeletal muscle injury in experimental conditions. Seventy Wistar rats (170 - 250 g) were assigned to smoking (n = 49) or non-smoking (n = 21) groups. The smoking groups were submitted to a single or multiple (i.e., five or thirty) daily sessions of cigarette smoking in an inhalatory chamber (time length: 2 h each session). The level of exposure was constant and assessed by CO concentrations (50 ppm) and serum cotinine analysis. Animals submitted to a single smoke exposure and the corresponding controls were euthanized in groups at 0 h, 2 h, 4 h, 24 h or 48 h after completing the exposure. Animals submitted to multiple exposures were euthanized at 0 h after smoking. Samples from vastus lateralis muscle were obtained and processed for assessing cell injury and selected protein expression. Monoclonal anti-albumin antibodies were used to identify muscle fibers with sarcolemmal (membrane) injury. Subcellular muscle injury was assessed using transmission electron microscopy (EM). MyoD, myogenin and α-tubulin were immunodetected using western blot techniques. Exposure to cigarette smoke associated with significant membrane damage (mean relative difference (MRD) with controls: +181%, p = 0.004) and sarcomere disruptions (MRD: +226%, p = 0.001). Expression of MyoD and myogenin (normalized to α-tubulin) were significantly increased at 4 h and remained increased at 48 h post-exposure. We conclude that not only a single but also consecutive exposure to tobacco smoke have acute deleterious effects on peripheral muscle structure. dear Editor,Beige adipocytes,which increase energy expenditure by dissipating energy as heat,have gained attention as a therapeutic target for combating obesity.1 Adipocytes express many types of G-protein-coupled receptors(GPCRs),each of which has a unique preference for the Gs,Gi,Gq,and G12 *** the function of Gs-coupledβ-adrenergic receptors in beige adipocyte induction is well established,2 little is known about the function of G12-coupled GPCRs beyond its suppressive roles in white adipocyte maturation.3 In this study,we generated transgenic mice conditionally expressing a G12-coupled designer GPCR using a Cre-loxP system and investigated the potential effects of G12 signaling on adipocyte biology.

In Brazil,schistosomiasis occurrence is related to the presence of the etiological agent Schistosoma *** presence of mollusks for Biomphalaria genus is a necessary condition for development of the parasite *** Parástate,the species ***,***,*** and *** have already been identified,with reports of the last two occurring in Belé*** aim of this study was to determine the spatial distribution of Biomphalaria species in Belém,Pará,Brazil,identifying risk areas for schistosomiasis *** malacological surveys were carried out between September 2013 and October 2017 in 35 neighborhoods of Belé*** collection points were georeferenced using a Global Positioning System(GPS)receiver and the Kernel density Estimation(Kde)was used to the spatial *** mollusks,after measurement,were exposed to light to verify the presence of *** ***,mollusks were sacrificed and fixed for dissection and morphological identification of *** surveys resulted in a total of 10,803 mollusks collected,of which 9,367(86.70%)specimens were *** the analyzed mollusks,5,820(62.14%)were identified as *** and 3,547(37.86%)as *** presence of the parasite was observed in 208(2.22%)specimens,all *** mollusks were found in six neighborhoods:Guamá(51 mollusks/24.5%),Sacramenta(47 mollusks/22.6%),Telégrafo(47 mollusks/22.6%),Terra Firme(36 mollusks/17.3%),Condor(20 mollusks/9.6%)and Barreiro(7 mollusks/3.4%).This study confirms that *** species actively participates as intermediate host in the disease maintenance in Belé*** Kde allowed to analyze the spatial distribution of collection sites and consequently to determine possible risk areas of schistosomiasis transmission in *** development of maps identifying sites with schistosomiasis positive snails may support efforts of this municipality by directing activities related to endemic disease control.
