Reliability Analysis of a 2d Model of a Solar Still developed Using Comsol® Multiphysics

Solar stills represent a promising solution for desalinating saline waters, providing a sustainable alternative in regions with limited access to drinking water. This study evaluates the reliability of a two-dimensional (2d) numerical model of a solar still, developed using COMSOL® Multiphysics software, focusing on a passive cascading device called “Pano Rano.” Two physical prototypes were constructed: one with a standard concrete basin and the other with acrylic plastic. The simulations revealed significant differences in theoretical yield based on the material used. With a radiation of 1200 W/m2, the acrylic prototype displayed an evaporation of 4455.53 mL/m2 and a production of 2925.98 mL/m2 of distilled water, while the concrete model showed an evaporation of 2109.95 mL/m2 and produced 1383.93 mL/m2 of distilled water. The results indicate that evaporation significantly exceeds condensation, highlighting an underutilized evaporation potential. The evaluation of the numerical model’s performance against experimental results was conducted using the mean squared error (MSE) and the coefficient of determination (R2). The best performance was observed in summer (MSE of 16.24;R2 of 0.95), while winter results were less convincing (MSE of 204.77;R2 of −2.78). This variability underscores the model’s limitations and the need for future research. The study also demonstrates that the choice of basin material significantly influences productivity, with acrylic plastic outperforming concrete in terms of thermal efficiency.

Using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave FP-LAPW method within local density ap-proximation LdA, we have studied positron diffusion and surface emission in Cd-based semiconductors. This requires the calculation of electron and positron band structures. In the absence of experimental and theoretical data for CdX (X=S,Se,Te) we have treated the Si, which has been studied by several authors, as a test case. Predictive results on positron effective masses, deformation potentials, positron work functions, diffusion constants and positron mobilities are presented for CdX (X=S, Se, Te). Our calculated data for Si are compared with experimental and recent theoretical results.

deep Learning(dL),a type of Machine Learning,has gained significant interest in many fields,including *** paper aims to shed light on deep learning techniques used in agriculture for abiotic and biotic stress detection in fruits and vegetables,their benefits,and the challenges faced by *** papers were collected from Web of Science,Scopus,Google Scholar,Springer,and directory of Open Access Journals(dOAJ)using combinations of specific keywords such as:’deep Learning’OR’Artificial Intelligence’in combination with fruit disease’,vegetable disease’,‘fruit stress',OR‘vegetable stress'following PRISMA *** the initial 818 papers identified using the keywords,132 were reviewed after excluding books,reviews,and the *** recovered scientific papers were from 2003 to 2022;93%addressed biotic stress on fruits and *** most common biotic stresses on species are fungal diseases(grey spots,brown spots,black spots,downy mildew,powdery mildew,and anthracnose).Few studies were interested in abiotic stresses(nutrient deficiency,water stress,light intensity,and heavy metal contamination).deep Learning and Convolutional Neural Networks were the most used keywords,with Googlenet(18.28%),ResNet50(16.67%),and VGG16(16.67%)as the most used ***-two percent of the data used to compile these models come from the fields,followed by data obtained *** problems due to unbalanced classes and the small size of some databases were also *** provided the research gaps and some perspectives from the reviewed *** research works are required for a deep understanding of the use of machine learning techniques in fruit and vegetable studies:collection of large datasets according to different scenarios on fruit and vegetable diseases,evaluation of the effect of climatic variability on the fruit and vegetable yield using AI methods and more abiotic stress studies.

A quantum cascade laser infrared spectrometer for CO_2 stable isotope analysis：Field implementation at a hydrocarbon contaminated site under bio-remediation

Real-time methods to monitor stable isotope ratios of CO_2 are needed to identify biogeochemical origins of CO_2 emissions from the soil–air interface. An isotope ratio infra-red spectrometer（IRIS） has been developed to measure CO_2 mixing ratio with δ~13C isotopic signature, in addition to mixing ratios of other greenhouse gases（CH_4, N2_O）. The original aspects of the instrument as well as its precision and accuracy for the determination of the isotopic signature δ~13C of CO_2 are discussed. A first application to biodegradation of hydrocarbons is presented, tested on a hydrocarbon contaminated site under aerobic bio-treatment. CO_2 flux measurements using closed chamber method is combined with the determination of the isotopic signature δ~13C of the CO_2 emission to propose a non-intrusive method to monitor in situ biodegradation of hydrocarbons. In the contaminated area, high CO_2 emissions have been measured with an isotopic signature δ~13C suggesting that CO_2 comes from petroleum hydrocarbon *** first field implementation shows that rapid and accurate measurement of isotopic signature of CO_2 emissions is particularly useful in assessing the contribution of contaminant degradation to the measured CO_2 efflux and is promising as a monitoring tool for aerobic bio-treatment.

Identification of pests and assessment of their damage on Carapa procera and Lophira lanceolata in Burkina Faso,West Africa

Nontimber forest products are a source of income for women in rural African communities. However, these products are frequently damaged by insect pests. The present study investigates the diversity and damage rates of insect pests that attack Carapa procera seeds and Lophira lanceolata fruits. The experiment was set up in western Burkina Faso and, for C. carapa, consisted of pests collected from seeds that had fallen to the ground and from stockpiled seeds. For L. lanceolata, pests were collected from fruits on the trees, and on the ground. The collected samples were sent to the laboratory to estimate the proportion of damaged seeds/fruits and rear the insects. The results showed that Ephestia spp., Tribolium castaneum, Oryzeaphilus spp., and Tenebroides mauritanicus were the pests of Carapa procera seeds and Lophira lanceolata fruits. Ephestia spp. was recorded as the main pest of both C. proeera and L. lanceolata, whereas T. castaneum was only detected from seeds of L. lanceolata. For C. procera, the stocks were the most infested （29 %） by Ephestia spp. The infestation rate of fruits of L. lanceolata by Ephestia spp, on trees （31.42 ± 3.75 %） was less than the rate of fruits by T. castaneum on the ground （44.00 ± 3.5 %）. The different body sizes of Ephestia spp. may indicate the occurrence of two putative species, one from C. procera and another one from L. lanceolata. This work provides important information that could contribute to the setting up of a local-scale sustainable management framework for oil tree pests in Burkina Faso and surrounding countries.

The purpose of this study is to introduce the current applications of off-line programming technology in thermal spraying,including some popular methods of path generation,procedure simulation,robot kinematics optimization,*** this technology reduces the difficulty of robot programming and enormously improves its facility for thermal *** the last part of this paper,presented two examples of off-line programming in thermal spraying which refer to trajectory optimization on a work piece with a great angle and path generation on the complex work *** simulations and experiments have proved that off-line programming can effectively improve the production efficiency and the quality of coating.

In order to identify the influence of shape comers on the instantaneous forces in the case of oscillating bodies, the simula- ted flow field is compared for two kinds of cross sections： diamond prism and circular cylinder. For these two flow configurations, the same Reynolds number and a Keulegan-Carpenter are considered. To compute the dynamic flow field surrounding the body, the Navier-Stokes transport equations in a non-inertial reference frame attached to the body are considered. Hence, a source term is added locally to the momentum equation to take into account the body acceleration. The proposed model is solved using the PHOenICS code. For the oscillating circular cylinder, the simulated results are in good agreement with the experimental data availa- ble in the litterature. After validation of this proposed model, flow field for diamond prism is determined. For both bodies, the pro- cess of the vortex formation is similar, with the formation of a recirculation zone in the near-wake containing a symmetric pair of vortices of equal strength and opposite rotation. The length of recirculation zone varies approximately linearly with time. However, the in-line force coefficient of the oscillating diamond prism is found to be greatest, since the recirculation zone is longer compared with that of the oscillating circular cylinder.

Effects of nano-voids and nano-cracks on the elastic properties of a host medium: xfem modeling with level-set function and free surface energy

This work deals with the influences of nano-heterogeneities in the form of voids/cavities or cracks on the elastic (please confirm which word is correct. effective or elastic? According to the title of paper, I choose elastic.) properties of a host medium. With a relatively large ratio of apparent-surface to volume and particularly strong physical interactions with the surrounding medium at nano-scale, nano-heterogeneities can potentially affect the elastic(effective or elastic?) properties of the parent medium (matrix) containing them in a significant manner. This has been reported by various theoretical and experimental studies, some of them are discussed in the present paper. To describe the positive (reinforcement) or negative (degradation) effect of the nano-heterogeneities from the modeling perspective, it is necessary to take into account the energy of interfaces/surfaces between nano-heterogeneities and the matrix which, by the fact of the relatively large extent of their apparent surface and their strong physical interaction with their neighborhood, can no longer be neglected compared to those of the volume energy. Thus, to account for the effects of interfaces/surfaces in a nanostructured heterogeneous medium, the coherent interface model is considered in the present investigation within a periodic homogenization procedure. In this interface/surface model, the displacement vector is assumed to be continuous across the interface while the stress vector is considered to be discontinuous and satisfying the Laplace-Young equations. To solve these equations coupled to the classical mechanical equilibrium problem, a numerical simulation tool is developed in a two-dimensional (2d) context using the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) and the Level-Set functions. The developed numerical tool is then used to carry out a detailed analysis about the effect of nano-heterogeneities on the overall mechanical properties of a medium. Various values of the plate aspect ratio and the amplitude of vibrations will be considered, and useful numerical data also are provided.

Modal decomposition for the Analysis of the Rotor-stator Interactions in Multi-stage Compressors

A modal analysis method of the rotor-stator interactions in multistage compressors has been developed by LMFA. This method, based on a double modal decomposition of the flow over space and time, has been applied to nu- merical and experimental results of the high-speed 3Y2-stage compressor CREATE based at LMFA, Lyon-France. It reveals the presence of a very strong rotor-stator interaction which completely drives the flow at casing behind all the rotors. This modal analysis method applied to an unsteady RANS simulation permits to calculate the en- ergy of the rotor-stator interactions and to plot energetic meridian maps to explain experimental results and to analyze the interaction in the whole machine.
