Phenological stage effect on phenolic composition and repellent potential of Mentha pulegium against Tribolium castaneum and lasioderma serricorne

Objective:To elucidate for the first time the phenological stage effect on polyphenol,flavonoid and proanthocyanidin contents of pennyroyal(Mentha pulegium)as well as their antioxidant capacities and insecticidal potentials against Tribolium castaneum and lasioderma ***:Crude methanol extracts from pennyroyal(Mentha pulegium)aerial parts were evaluated for their anti radical,reducing power activities and repellent potentials against selected coleopteran insects during different phenological ***:Phenolic contents of pennyroyal aerial parts and their antioxidant effects were significantly dependent on maturity stage of the *** maximum of phenol production was reached during the full flowering *** was the major phenol in Mentha pulegium with an amount of6.01 mg/g of dry vegetable matter during this ***,at fructification stage,the highest antioxidant activity was not related to high phenolic *** repulsive effect of pennyroyal extract showed that lasioderma serricorne was more susceptible to pennyroyal extract than Tribolium castarneum with corresponding median repellent dose values of 0.124and 0.006 mg/mL ***,great differences in insect repulsion depending on extract concentrations,exposure time and developmental stage was *** the lowest concentration(0.125 mg/mL),the repellent effect against Tribolium reached its maximum(90%)during the fructification stage(after 24 h of exposure)while this repellent effect was 80%during the vegetative ***:Due to the strong insecticidal potential of pennyroyal extracts,this study highlights the therapeutic properties of this plant and encourages its use as a safer,environmental-friendly and efficient insecticide in food industry.

Variation of CH_4 concentrations recorded in Dunde ice core bubbles

GREENHOUSE gases such as CH4 in the ancient atmospheric concentration can be reconstructed by extracting and analyzing the gases trapped in polar ice core bubbles. It is a new attempt to extract and analyze the CH4 concentration in Dunde ice core for the study of mountain glacier. Samples were taken from the about 140-m ice core drilled in 1987 in Dunde ice cap in Qilian Mountain. The ice core has been well preserved in cold room. 12 samples were taken from the upper 95 m, and cut to 15 cm in length and 5cm in diameter. CH4 concentrations were measured in CNRS laboratory of Glaciology, Grenoble, France.

The nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) transcriptionfactor coordinates several aspects of innate and adaptiveimmunity, inflammation, cell survival and proliferation [1,2]. Dysregulation of the NF-κB pathway has been associ-ated with cancer development and progression as well aswith other human diseases including viral infections anda number of inflammatory diseases [1]. NF-κB is formedthrough the dimerization of 5 subunits, including membersof the Rel protein family, namely Rela (p65), c-Rel, RelB,NF-κB1 (p50 and its precursor p105) and NF-κB2 (p52and its precursor p 100). Two pathways are involved in theactivation of NF-κB. In both these pathways, kinase activityand proteasome activity play a major role in freeing NF-κBfrom cytoplasmic inhibitors to promote its nuclear translo-cation and activation. The classical or canonical pathwayis activated by a large range of stimuli (microbial and viralinfections, proinflammatory cytokines). In this pathway,NF-κB dimers, mostly p50/Rela and p50/c-Rel, are usuallyretained in the cytoplasm by their interaction with specificinhibitors, called IκBs. Synthesis and Electrical Properties of Well-Ordered layered α-MoO_3 Nanosheets

α-MoO_3 ordered nanosheets have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions using commercial MoO_3 and hydroquinone as structuring agent. X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscope(SEM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) were used to analyse the obtained material. The conductivity mechanism of the Molybdenum ordered nanosheets has been investigated using combined complex impedance and modulus *** temperature dependence of the conductivity, which was between 473 and 573 K, is very close to the Arrhenius' law, with an activation energy of 0.76 eV. However, the conductivity of the material increases with temperature. It shows a typical negative temperature coefficient resistance(NTCR) similar to that of a semiconductor. The dielectric properties of the MoO_3 compound have been studied in the temperature range of 473-573 K as well as the frequency range of 10 Hz to 13 MHz. The ac-conductivity for high frequency σac(ω)obeys the universal power law.

Recently,follicle stimulating hormone receptor was found to be selectively expressed by endothelial cells on tumor-associated blood vessels in a wide range of human *** this context,we hypothesized that degarelix,a new gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor antagonist developed for patients with prostate cancer,may have antiangiogenic effects via its capacity to block follicle stimulating hormone(FSH)production. We report the case of a patient with metastatic colon cancer exhibiting tumor progression after failure of all conventional chemotherapeutic *** addition of degarelix to the last chemotherapeutic regimen was proposed as compassionate *** induced a rapid decrease in FSH *** treatment induced radiological stabilization and carcinoembryonic antigen stabilization during 1 ***-enhanced ultrasonography demonstrated reduction of tumor *** case represents the first report of an antitumoral effect of degarelix in metastatic colon cancer and suggests an antiangiogenic property of this drug.

Biomarkers for detection of alcohol consumption in liver transplantation

Alcoholic liver disease is an established, yet controversial, indication for liver transplantation. Although an abstinence period of up to 6 mo prior to transplantation is mandatory, alcohol relapse after transplantation is a common event. In case of recurrence of heavy drinking, graft survival is significantly impaired. Guidelines on detection and surveillance of alcohol consumption in this patient cohort are lacking. This review summarizes the challenge of patient selection as well as the current knowledge on established and novel alcohol biomarkers with special focus on liver transplant candidates and recipients.

Epistasis and Maternal Effect in Resistance to Puccinia coronata ***. avenae Eriks in Oats(Avena sp.)

The objective of this paper was to investigate the mode of heredity for resistance in oats （Avena sp.） to crown rust caused by Puccinia coronata Cda. f. sp. avenae Eriks, Eight generations of 2 crosses were used to estimate genetic effects and narrow-sense heritability （NSH）. Separate generation means analysis （GMA） indicated a complex gene action controlling this trait with additive, dominance, epistatic and maternal effects （ME）. The genetic model which assumed no epistasis and no ME did not accurately describe the resistance to P. coronata. In both crosses, the digenic epistatic model with ME was sufficient to explain variation in generation means for isolate CRec58 and isolate CRec46. Additive dominance and epistatic components were negative in most cases, suggesting that gene effects contributed more to the resistance than to the susceptibility. The estimated values of NSH were 15-99% depending upon the cross and isolates. The results indicated that appropriate choice of maternal parent and recurrent selection would increase resistance to crown rust in oats.

Periodic oscillation of quantum diffusion in coupled one-dimensional systems

We analytically show that quantum diffusion in the coupled system composed of two identical chains exhibits a well-defined periodic oscillation in both transverse and longitudinal directions with a frequency determined by the interchain hopping strength, no matter whether the chains are periodic or non-periodic. We illustrate the result through numerical work on the coupled periodic chains and the quasiperiodic Aubry-Andre-Harper(AAH) chains with various modulations of onsite potentials supporting extended, critical, and localized states. We further numerically show that quantum diffusion in the coupled chains of different degrees of disorder W exhibits an exponential decay oscillation similar to the behavior of an underdamped harmonic oscillator, with a decay time inversely proportional to the square of W and a slight frequency change proportional to the square of W. Moreover, quantum diffusions in the coupled systems composed of two different chains are numerically studied, including periodic/disordered chains, periodic/AAH chains, and two different AAH chains, which exhibit the same behavior of underdamped periodic oscillation if the onsite potential difference between two chains is smaller than the interchain hoping *** of this universal periodic oscillation is a result of spectral splitting of the iso-spectra of two chains determined by interchain hopping, independent of system size, boundary condition, and intrachain onsite potentials. Because the oscillation frequency and spreading distance of wavepacket can be tuned separately by interchain hopping and intrachain potentials, the periodic oscillation of quantum diffusion in coupled chains is expected to find applications in control of quantum states and in designing nanoscale quantum devices.

CD4＋FoxP3＋ regulatory T cells （Tregs） are immunosuppressive cells that are critical for immune tolerance. Several studies have demonstrated that one of the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of action of intravenous immunoglobulin （Wig） involves the expansion of Tregs. Recently, we demonstrated that IVIgmediated Treg expansion involves the cyclooxygenase-2 （COX-2）-dependent induction of prostaglandin E2 （PGE2） in human dendritic cells （DCs）. However, the validity of these findings in autoimmune patients is lacking.
